12. (本题10分)     An internationally praised cultural thing has introduced the attractive tale of Sun Wukong to audiences worldwide. But for Ghaffar Pourazar,a British-American dual citizen living in California;this legendary figure has been a part of his identity for decades.
Pourazar's lifelong passion for Peking Opera began by chance. In 1993,Pourazar attended a performance at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and was instantly captured. He went backstage right after the show and made friends with the Chinese performers. With their help,Pourazar was enrolled at an opera school.Just three months later,he left his life in Britain behind and moved to Beijing to train in the martial roles of the art.
Starting as an adult was not easy,as Peking Opera is a complex mixture of vocal performance, mime, martial arts, dance and acrobatics. In addition to the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language posed another problem."I was constantly reciting the subtitles and songs, whether I was eating bathing.walking,or even dreaming."Pourazar said.
Pourazar believes that great art transcends languages.Over the years,he has devoted himself to introducing Peking Opera and Sun Wukong to international audiences. He has also been teaching courses and organizing workshops in the United-States,bringing Peking Opera to curious Western-learners.To better connect with Western audiences and:learners,he adapted some classic plays such as The Monkey King:Uproar in Heaven into English versions and he also adapted Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night' Dream ino-Peking Opera.
In recognition of his contributions,Pourazar received the Great Wall Friendship Award from.the Beijing government in 2014."Cultural exchange should be reciprocal(互惠的).I aim to blend my expertise in opera with my multicultural background to create enriching artistic experiences for the audiences,"said Pourazar.

13. (本题10分)     What if everything happens for a reason?Burnt toast theory,a modern view on this classic idea, suggests that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.
Imagine you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work.According to burnt toast theory, this tiny inconvenience can cause a domino effect(多米诺效应).Your morning gets delayed by three to five minutes-just enough time to leave the house later than usual and avoid a potential car accident.Or perhaps you catch a later train, missing an awkward encounter with someone you don't intend to see.You might even meet someone new whom you wouldn't have otherwise met, leading to a friendship or romantic connection.
When we feel like things are outside our control, that can be scary. The burnt toast theory can help some people let go of their need for control and take negative situations more positively.
However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial,over-optimism can lead to"poisonous positivity".When we only allow ourselves to focus on positive thoughts,we are denying ourselves the chance to properly deal with challenges and difficult situations to better ourselves, focusing on creating a false positive facade(假象) instead.By constantly avoiding negative experiences,we might ignore their real impact on us and fail to acknowledge when we're struggling. It can make us feel worse about ourselves, and may lead to pushing down negative feelings or experiences, and refusing to acknowledge or deal with them fully.
Instead of focusing purely on positive thinking, working towards developing a growth mindset may be more helpful. You don't always have to look for life's silver linings,or even the meaning behind a little burnt toast.Sometimes things happen, and they suck. But as long as we take time to acknowledge how these things make us feel, and recognize that we can't always control everything around us,we can still work towards improving ourselves, and how we handle life's unexpected challenges-and that's what really matters.

(1)What can be inferred from the burnt toast theory?
A.Life is a process,not destination.
B.Lost in the east, gained in the west.
C.Life is full of endless challenges.
D.Lost time will never be found again.
(2)Which can be an outcome from"poisonous positivity"?
A.Loss of chances to grow.
B.Failure to acknowledge others.
C.Inability to control emotions.
D.Decline in physical health.
(3)Which can be seen as a growth mindset mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.Finding reasons for failure.
B.Avoiding pushing others too hard.
C.Accepting life and making it better.
D.Keeping a positive mindset and working hard.
(4)Which is the best possible title for the text?
A.Burn Toast Theory:Find a True Self
B.Burn Toast Theory:Lead a Positive Life
C.Burn Toast Theory:More than Positivity
D.Burn Toast Theory:How to Live Actively
14. (本题10分)     People vary in how well they discriminate and identify foods. The variation is explained by a general ability to recognize objects. We researchers originally theorized the variability might also be associated with people's attitude toward new foods. Those who endorse statements like"I am particular about what I eat"have food neophobia—refusal of food novelty.Sure enough, our study did find picky eaters scored worst on our tests of food recognition:Food neophobia is negatively correlated with food recognition ability.
While we were publishing our finding, scientists were debating new findings about how the brain reacts to food and color.Different research groups had identified brain areas in the visual system that responded preferentially to images of food. For instance, looking at a bowl of noodles would activate these brain areas, but not looking at a pile of string. The scientific disagreement was about what it meant to identify a selectivity for food in brain areas already known for their responsiveness to color.
We repeated our initial study with gray-scale images of food. The result showed without color, people unsurprisingly made more errors, mistaking different dishes as the same, but the pattern of variation across people was otherwise unchanged. Those with a higher general visual ability did better with food.We also found one effect of removing color:Food neophobia was no longer correlated with food recognition ability. It was as if whatever advantage the adventurous eaters had gained over picky ones was all dependent on color.
We then made an entirely new prediction:Would people with color blindness be less food neophobic than those with normal color perception?Because the colorblind experience food in a restricted range of color, certain signals that raise flags about freshness, safety,or otherwise drive anxiety about novel food could be limited.
We invited participants online, based on how they answered one question about color blindness buried in a long screening questionnaire. The survey suggested colorblind people were indeed less food neophobic than the non-colorblind.Seeing the world with a narrow color range seems to ease an emotion-based resistance to novel foods.
Our findings pave the way for addressing extreme cases of food neophobia. As researchers learn more about the complicated relevance between color perception and food,we might develop targeted interventions to improve dietary habits.

Exhausted and disoriented,he lay on the sandy beach, thanking whatever forces had saved his life. After he surveyed the surroundings,he realized the harsh reality of his isolation. He prayed to God and scanned the horizon for any sign of rescue, but no help appeared. In the midst of despair,he gradually awakened to the fact that he had to survive on this uninhabited island on his own.Driven by great determination, the survivor managed to build a shelter with the driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The survivor, once stuck in his isolation, started exploring the island's hidden treasures. His routine became a dull cycle of hunting for food, collecting rainwater, and scanning the horizon for any sign of rescue. But the vast expanse of the ocean offered no comfort,no ship on the horizon to save him.
Despite his loneliness, the survivor clung to hope. The sunrises brought a glimmer of optimism, and he kept scanning the horizon, searching for any trace of rescue.
Then, one fateful day,as he returned from a fruitless search for food,he was greeted by a devastating sight — hielter was on fire, and the smoke was rolling up to the sky!The worst had happened — the fire had consumed all his possessions, leaving him nothing but the clothes on his back.Desperation and disbelief seized him as he watched the smoke rise to the sky,a cruel demonstration of his misfortune.
