Admittedly, complex writing that uses rich vocabulary and vivid figurative language can wow readers. But it isn't the only mark of a good writer.Another skill that's of equal importance is the ability to convey ideas in plain language.(1)       To write in plain language, there are some general guidelines for you to follow.
    (2)       The only details they include are those necessary for the reader to understand the sentences' meaning. For example, the sign"Wait behind the yellow line."at a train platform includes"yellow"so travelers know where to stand.
Plain language avoids using vocabulary that requires specialized knowledge. If you work in IT,you can comfortably use the word "latency"with your colleagues.(3)       But when speaking with someone without an IT background, you might instead use"slow"to ensure that they know what you're talking about.
Plain language is more than word choices,though.(4)       This can be achieved in the following ways. For example, use clear headers for each section and keep paragraphs focused on one idea each.Make the relationships between ideas and sentences clear with transition words.Write directly to your reader.Additionally, use the active voice whenever possible to enhance clarity.

[解析]
(1)联系上文题。根据前文But it isn't the only mark of a good writer.Another skill that's of equal importance is the ability to convey ideas in plain language.(另一个同样重要的技能是用通俗易懂的语言表达想法的能力。)以及下文To write in plain language, there are some general guidelines for you to follow.(要用通俗易懂的语言写作,有一些一般的指导方针供你遵循。)可知,前文提到一种能力,后文是提出一些知道方法,所以空处应是过渡句,E项"It involves using direct and accessible language with a straightforward structure.(它包括使用结构简单的直接易懂的语言)"承接上文内容,为对上文内容的具体解释,同时引起下文,符合文意。故选E项。
(2)联系下文题。根据后文The only details they include are those necessary for the reader to understand the sentences' meaning. For example, the sign "Wait behind the yellow line." at a train platform includes "yellow" so travelers know where to stand.(它们只包括读者理解句子意义所必需的细节。例如,"请在黄线后面等候"的标志。站台上的标志包括"黄色",以便乘客知道该站在哪里。)可知,提到只包括那些读者理解句子意义所必需的细节,也就是句子要简洁。所以D项"One key aspect of plain writing is ensuring sentences are as short as possible.(简洁写作的一个关键方面是确保句子尽可能短)"符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选D项。
(3)联系上文题。根据前文If you work in IT,you can comfortably use the word "latency" with your colleagues.(如果您从事IT工作,那么您可以轻松地与同事使用"latency"这个词。)以及后文But when speaking with someone without an IT background, you might instead use "slow" to ensure that they know what you're talking about.(但是当你和一个没有IT背景的人说话时,你可以用"slow"来确保他们知道你在说什么。)可知,A项"That is because they know what it means.(那是因为他们知道这意味着什么)"是对前文的解释,并和后文构成转折关系。故选A项。
(4)联系上文题。根据前文Plain language is more than word choices, though.(然而,简单的语言不仅仅是词语的选择。)以及后文For example, use clear headers for each section and keep paragraphs focused on one idea each.Make the relationships between ideas and sentences clear with transition words.Write directly to your reader.Additionally, use the active voice whenever possible to enhance clarity.(例如,每个部分使用清晰的标题,每个段落专注于一个观点。用过渡词使观点和句子之间的关系清晰。直接写给你的读者。此外,尽可能使用主动语态来提高清晰度。)可知,本段讲述简单的语言除了词语的选择还要有清晰度,所以C项"It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.(它还包括组织写作,优先考虑清晰)"符合本段主题,引出下文内容。故选C项。
(5)联系上文题。根据前文It is important to note that not every guideline for plain writing will apply to every piece of writing. The ultimate goal is to create contents that are accessible and easily understood.By using plain language, you demonstrate respect for your readers' time and intelligence.(重要的是要注意,并不是所有关于普通写作的指导方针都适用于每一篇文章。最终目标是创建可访问且易于理解的内容。通过使用通俗易懂的语言,你表现出对读者时间和智慧的尊重。)可知,本段主要讲述创建可访问且易于理解的内容,表现出对读者时间和智慧的尊重。所以B项"Thus,it develops positive relationships with them.(因此,它与他们发展了积极的关系)"是对前文的总结,和前文构成因果关系,符合文意。故选B项。

(2020•西安中学•三模) Art galleries are places in which artists can display all types of works of art, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, etc. (1)       At the same time, however, each artwork must be protected from exposure to too much light since that can cause works to fade and therefore get ruined.(2)
The most common form of lighting used to light up artwork is indoor spotlights on tracks attached to the ceiling near where the work is being displayed.(3)        It permits the lights to be moved more easily when the light patterns require adjusting.Recessed(嵌入的) lights in walls and ceilings can be useful so long as they are not fixed in place but can instead be easily moved to create ideal light patterns. Most art gallery directors state that a combination of tracked and recessed light equipment is ideal because the tracked lights focus directly on the artwork while the recessed lights are used on the nearby walls to provide a surrounding light source.(4)
How to angle the lights depends upon the height of the ceiling and the size of the artwork.Caution must be taken to avoid creating too many areas with shadows or to have the lights cause a glare on the artwork.Besides, the lightould not be bare bulbs burning directly on the artwork but should be made in some way to make the lighting softer.According to experts, low voltage(电压)bulbs are the best to use when lighting artwork.(5)       Thus artwork should be placed in a room where sunlight can't directly hit it.

A.It can make the displays attractive.
B.Using tracked lighting is beneficial.
C.Light plays a key role in art galleries.
D.This light source can better improve the mood surrounding the work.

F.Finding a happy medium between not enough light and too much of it requires considerable skill and experience.

During job or school interviews, you're likely to be asked what your strengths and weaknesses are, because the interviewers are interested in how your areas of strengths and weaknesses might affect your performance in this position. (1)        For instance, you may be skilled in cooking, but if you're applying for an office job, this strength may be irrelevant.
However, knowing your personal areas of strengths and weaknesses is not a piece of cake.It takes self-awareness and self-reflection. (2)        Or,ask some of your friends what they see as your best qualities or shortcomings.

During your university education, you'll be exposed to ideas and scientific theories of scholars and sciehtists.Unavoidably, your own ideas will be shaped by the ideas you come across.(1)       That means you should go beyond what you learn in your textbooks or in the library.Your original work is the basis for your professor's evaluation of your performance. Thus, academic honesty is fundamental in your university education. It demands that you cite the source materials you base your own work on.(2)
Correctly citing your sources helps you distinguish your own ideas from those of other scholars. On the readers' side,it permits a reader to determine the depth of your research.(3)       On the contrary, lack of citing will only raise your reader's doubt.
So you need to learn when to cite and how to provide an adequate or accurate reference list.If you fail to cite your sources, whether deliberately or carelessly, you will be found responsible for plagiarism(抄袭).(4)       If you are not sure, ask your professor for guidance before submitting the paper or report.Keep in mind this general rule:when in doubt,cite!(5)       For example, students from East Asia may think that copying directly from sources is the proper way to do research.Students in France, preparing for the final examination.may be encouraged to memorize whole passages and copy them into papers. Those cultural differences can lead to false assumptions about academic expectations in the country you study in.

204500. (2023•蓝田县•高二下期末)     Just as a philosopher says,I think, therefore I am.However, when it comes to effective teaching and learning informed by cognitive science — the science of the mind — it's perhaps more appropriate to say: (1)        So,what does effortful thinking look like? Here,we explore two modes of effortful thinking,or digging deep.
    (2)        If you were building a well, would you spend five minutes digging a shallow hole and then call it a day,or would you spend time and effort digging continuously until you struck water?I think we can all agree that digging deeper for longer would be best. (3)        The longger and more effortfully we think about something, the more durable its "memory trace" will be and the more accessible that information will become.
If you want learning to be connected, try digging like an archaeologist.Imagine you are on an archeological dig, carefully unearthing the remains of an ancient city. For instance, rather than simply labeling an item "spoon," you would instead tag it as, "an iron spoon, probably made for a child." You know that organizing items in this way is crucial if you want other archeologists and researchers to identify and make sense of the antique by its parts (child, iron) and connect it to their own work. (4)
So,in order to promote your deep, effortful thinking, you'd better use "how/why" questions that invite connections between things and push for the principle behind an idea.Besides, consider "what if..." questions that break the surface features of an idea and invite a consideration of its underlying characteristics. (5)        Lengthen the duration of effortful thinking by keeping yourself at the site of thought for longer.

A.I think deeply,therefore I learn.
B.Thinking deeply often depends on the questions we ask.
C.If you want learning to be durable, try digging a well.
D.Add more tags for others to understand and access later.
E.It's also of great importance not to move on too quickly.
F.You'd better go on with what you are working on rapidly.
G.It turns out the same is true for how we remember things.

204670. (2023•西安高级中学•高二下期末)     Map reading, growing fruit and vegetable and basic car service are also more common skills among the baby boomer generation. But according to a new survey, just one in three 18-to 25-year-olds are able to do basic DIY,compared to two-thirds of those aged 58 and over.
Sarah Clarke-Kuehn,Chief Operating Officer-Commercial ,said, "The survey findings are so interesting as they highlight a very common incorrect conception related to 'getting old'."
When asked at what age they thought developing new skills becomes "difficult",Gen Z respondents said they were 35 years old, while those aged over 58 believed this number was 63 years old.The belief is that there is a boundary between learning new skills and getting a sense of achievement. But we know that this is just not the case. The benefits in continuing to enjoy life,as well as developing new talents are very significant—both physically and mentally as we grow older.
Neuroscientist and author,Dr Julia Jones, said, "We underestimate our brain's ability to continue learning. Our brain is the most complex and precise structure in the known universe but we only use a small part of its true potential throughout our lifetimes. To boost continued brain health,we should learn complex and novel skills at all ages. This becomes more important as we age, because these learning experiences help to build new connections between neurons(神经细胞) that maintain intelligence and reduce the risk of future brain decline."
"Learning languages and musical instruments are believed to be effective at boosting neuroplasticity(神经可塑性) due to their complex nature, but all learning is beneficial and can bring a sense of achievement, purpose and social engagement."
Dr Jones added, "Find a new hobby and throw yourself into a wonderful learning experience or pick up an old pastime and improve those skills.I'm currently learning to play the guitar and it's opened up a whole new world of music and fun."

204671. (2023•西安高级中学•高二下期末)     Biologists who study evolution(进化) have always been interested in animals that developed on islands. In some situations, animals on islands changed over time and came to look very different from the same species that lived on the mainland.
The experts point to animals such as the dwarf elephant that once lived on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The animal is now extinct. When it lived ,however,it was only the size of a small horse.Elephants that live today in Africa and Asia are much larger than that.In the West Indies, researchers found a giant rodent(啮齿动物) that looked like a rat. However,it was about the same size as an American black bear.Rats are,of course, many times smaller than bears.
Evolutionary experts came to call this phenomenon "island effect".They used this term to describe the fact that animals who normally have small bodies"upsize" on an island, while the opposite is true for animals who usually have large bodies.
The"island effect"produces strange-sized animals because large animals require more food than small animals. On an island, there is a limited amount of food.As a result, larger animals become smaller over generations in order to survive with lower food intake. For small animals, there is not as much risk from predators (捕食性动物) on an island,so they often grow larger.
Recently, researchers released their findings about 1,231 existing animals and 350 extinct ones that represent 23 million years of life. They found that animals on islands were more at risk of extinction compared to their relatives on the mainland. The arrival of human settlers increased the extinction risk for these strange animals.
Roberto Rozzi,a paleoecologist at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany said that the extinction line has become even sharper in recent decades.
The researchers call the islands "biodiversity hotspots".Even though they only make up 7% of the Earth's land mass, they account for 20% of the land species.
