12. (本题6分)     Sitting in the garden for my friend's birthday.I felt a buzz(振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender's name. The email started off:"Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest" and "the review process took longer than expected."It ended with"We are sorry to inform you…"and my vision blurred(模糊).The position-measuring soil quality in the Sahara Desert as part of an undergraduate research programme-had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for.I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career.
So I waocked when, not long after the email,Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab.I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked-and overjoyed-when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn't seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to,but I was going to give it my all.
I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn't.In the end.I had a new scientific interest to pursue.
When I applied to graduate school,I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit,it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective(视角)to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.
Rather than setting plans in stone,I've learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don't sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.

(3)According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was        .
A.demanding
B.inspiring
C.misleading
D.amusing
(4)What can we learn from this passage?
A.An invitation is a reputation.
B.An innovation is a resolution.
C.A rejection can be a redirection.
D.A reflection can be a restriction.
13. (本题6分) We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don't even realize it's new.For them,it's just normal.
This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday.I had brought a children's book to read.It had simple words and colorful pictures- a perfect match for his age.
Picture this:my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read,he reaches out and pokes(戳)the page with his finger.
What's up with that?He just likes the pictures,I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder.I nearly dropped the book.I was confused:Is there something wrong with this kid?
Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them.He thought my storybook was like that.
Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It's an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather.Well,I may be old,but I'm not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking.I edit video and produce audio.I use mobile payment.I've even built websites.
There's one notable gap in my new-media experience, however:I've spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn't stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing,Tianjin and Hebei province.
Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star- two minutes of fame!I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet.

D.He often interviews internet stars.
14. (本题6分) An Australian professor is developing a robot to monitor the health of grazing cattle,a development that could bring big changes to a profession that's relied largely on a low-tech approach for decades but is facing a labor shortage.
Salah Sukkarieh,a professor at the University of Sydney, sees robots as necessary given how cattlemen are aging. He is building a four-wheeled robot that will run on solar and electric power. It will use cameras and sensors to monitor the animals.A computer system will analyze the video to determine whether a cow is sick.Radio tags(标签)on the animals will measure temperature changes. The quality of grassland will be tracked by monitoring the shape, color and texture (质地)of grass. That way, cattlemen will know whether they need to move their cattle to another field for nutrition purposes.
Machines have largely taken over planting, watering and harvesting crops such as corn and wheat, but the monitoring of cattle has gone through fewer changes.
For Texas cattleman Pete Bonds,it's increasingly difficult to find workers interested in watching cattle. But Bonds doesn't believe a robot is right for the job.Years of experience in the industry - and failed attempts to use technology - have convinced him that the best way to check cattle is with a man on a horse.Bonds, who bought his first cattle almost 50 years ago, still has each of his cowboys inspect 300 or 400 cattle daily and look for signs that an animal is getting sick.
Other cattlemen see more promise in robots.Michael Kelsey Paris, vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, said a robot could be extremely useful given rising concerns about cattle theft.Cattle tend to be kept in remote places and their value has risen, making them appealing targets.

(1)What is a problem with the cattle-raising industry?
A.Soil pollution.
B.Lack of workers.
C.Aging machines.
D.Low profitability.
(2)What will Sukkarieh's robot be able to do?
A.Monitor the quality of grass.
B.Cure the diseased cattle.
C.Move cattle to another field.
D.Predict weather changes.
(3)Why does Pete Bonds still hire cowboys to watch cattle?
A.He wants to help them earn a living.
B.He thinks men can do the job better.
C.He is inexperienced in using robots.
D.He enjoys the traditional way of life.
(4)How may robots help with cattle watching according to Michael Kelsey?
A.Increase the value of cattle.
B.Bring down the cost of labor.
C.Make the job more appealing.
D.Keep cattle from being stolen.
三、短文填空(1小题共10分)
15. (本题10分) Society tells us that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But it doesn't have to be that way.A new study published in Human Development points out that using a childlike approach to learning can help people of any age take on and rise to new challenges. (1)
Venture(冒险)outside your comfort zone.As adults,we tend to use similar skills day in and day out:we take jobs in fields we're already good at,drive the same routes to the same places, and fall into routines we're comfortable with. (2)        Switching to something more challenging may have more cognitive benefits.
   (3)        A fear of making mistakes is another reason why adults are slow to learn new things;if we try but fail,we can face criticism, lose money,or get fired. That's why it's important to build up a support network of people at work and at home - who allow you to make mistakes and learn from them.
Make a serious commitment and don't give up.(4)        If you can afford it,spending money on a new pursuit - for example, booking a trip to Rome to practice your Italian - might also make it harder to throw in the towel.
Learn more than one thing at once.We tend to zero in on one hobby or one skill. But dividing that time and energy into three or four areas will stretch your brain in all different directions.(5)        Add singing lessons, and next year you try something else. You can add things gradually based on what you can handle.

A.Turn to your friends and family.
B.The following strategies will do the trick.
C.Surround yourself with encouraging people.
D.Telling friends about your new goal can help keep you motivated.
E.But all this familiarity limits the parts of the brain we're using regularly.

29. (本题20分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in high school,I was afraid of public speaking. My voice would shake,my hands would sweat, and my mind would go blank.During a class presentation on climate change,I stumbled(结结巴巴) over my words and froze halfway through.A few students giggled, and my face turned bright red.Afterward,my teacher,Mrs.Lee,pulled me aside."You have great ideas,"she said,"but you need to trust yourself."
    A week later,she announced a school-wide speech competition.To my horror,she signed me up."Why me?"I protested."I'll embarrass myself again!"She smiled."Courage isn't the absence of fear-it's moving forward despite it.Give it a try."
Reluctantly,I chose a topic close to my heart:"Small Acts of Kindness."For weeks,I practiced daily-in front of my mirror,my dog,and even my little brother. My hands trembled during rehearsals, and I often forgot lines.Once,I tripped over a chair while practicing, but my brother clapped and said,"Do it again!"I recorded myself, cringed(畏缩) at every mistake, and tried again.Slowly,my confidence grew, though doubt still whispered:What if I freeze? What if no one cares?
On the day of the competition,my legs felt like jelly.Backstage,I held my notes tightly,my heart pounding like a drum. When my name was called, the spotlight blinded me as I stepped onto the stage. For a second, panic surged-but then I spotted Mrs.Lee in the front row, nodding encouragingly. Her calm smile anchored me.I took a deep breath and began speaking. My voice wavered at first, but as I shared stories of kindness-a stranger helping my lost grandmother, classmates cheering for a struggling runner-my words flowed.

(2)请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
