According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from London University, took a group of Britain people who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scanowed that grey matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skill. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible," he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading,writing and comprehension were all tested. The resultowed that the younger they started to learn, the better. (2025•师大附中•高二下期末)     Are you a short video app user?If you are ,you will probably find yourself more familiar with 15-second sped-up snippets(加速的片段) of songs than with the original tracks themselves. This trend has been evident on social media platforms particularly Douyin and--TikTok, "Sped-up versions of tracks can help artists break through or go viral, although that initial success may not last, "a radio host said. This sped-up mode offers a faster route to the dopamine rush that social media aims to arouse, leading to addiction and influencing our actions.
Watching everything at a sped-up pace seems like a good way to take in more content in a shorter time. However, what are the consequences?"So many people worked hard making specific decisions about pacing, fighting, timing and music, and speeding that all up just ruins it , "a Reddit user commented.
It seems that people speed up content because they want to complete the action of watching movies and"listening"to songs, not because they enjoy the movies and songs. It's almost as if they' re telling the creators :'I don't have the patience to care about all the detailed design and subtle(微妙的) emotions you put into the work, "All they want is a quick idea of"what's going on"and a feeling of"wow,I just consumed another place of information".
It's obvious that people don't realize that this is destroying their patience with life.First,it's sped-up songs and movies;then gradually,it becomes a speed up life."I found myself becoming impatient with doing research for my work or preparing for a test , "a Chinese netizen said,Since these tasks usually take hours or even days and weeks,I would think to myself, "How can I speed this up?"We already live in a fast-paced society, yet we still try to speed it up in every aspect.

(2024•经开一中•高一下一月) Many of us were delighted to learn that a high school senior Kwasi Enin was accepted to all eight Ivy (常青藤)League universities. To our surprise,he wasn't excited as expected, but appeared extra calm.He announced that he would revisit the universities to find the best suitable in music or medicine. He also wanted to compare their financial aid packages.
Kwasi's success story is rare, but his reaction is not. After the admission letters arrive at home, students have 30 days to really think about what kind of school would help them grow as a person, which school would best prepare them for the future, and at which school they would be happiest. And they also have to think about whether they can afford the school they choose.

220024. (2019•西电附中•高一上一月) America is a mobile society.Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while - then no more.If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.Sometimes,we,as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus.And they expect that we will phone them from there.Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

(1)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
C.Americans alwayow their warmth even if they are very busy.

A.warmly welcomed at the airport
B.offered a ride to his home
C.treated hospitably at his home
D.treated to dinner in a restaurant
(3)The underlined words "generous with our time" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.strict with time
B.serious with time
C.careful with time
D.willing to spend time
(4)A suitable title for this passage would probably be "       ".
A.Friendships between Chinese
B.Friendships between Americans

202502. (2021•西安中学•一模) Why do you go to the library? For books, yes - but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else's life.At one type of library, you can do just that - even though there's not a single book.
At a Human Library, instead of books, you can "borrow" people.Individuals volunteer as human "books" and participants in the event can "read" the book - meaning they would have a one-on-one conversation with the volunteer and share in a dialogue about that individual's experience. "Books" are volunteers from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination based on race, religion, class, gender identity, age, lifestyle choices, disability and other aspects of their life.
For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating and as attractive as any you can find in a book. Many of the stories have to do with some kind of stereotype(模式化形象).You can speak with a refugee (难民),a soldier suffering from PTSD,a homeless person or a woman living with HIV.The Human Library encourages people to challenge their own long-held beliefs - to truly get to know, and learn from someone they might otherwise make a quick judgment about.
According to its website, the Human Library is "a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered." It provides the opportunity for the community to share and understand the experiences of others in their community.
The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen,Denmark in 2000.Ronni Abergel, his brother Dany, and some colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern European festival, hoping to raise awareness about violence among youth. After the success of this event,Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, which has been growing ever since.
Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren't places at all,but events.Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don't need a library card - anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe,in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.
The stories these "books" tell range from fascinating to heartbreaking and everything in between. And that's the very point of the organization - to prove that no person can be summed up in just one word.It seeks to show people that you truly can't judge a book by its cover - or by its title or label.

(1)The "books" in human libraries are       .
A.long-held beliefs attracting individuals
B.inspiring stones motivating people in trouble
C.events in which people can talk to volunteers

A.aimed to help the young suffering from violence
B.attempted to replace traditional physical libraries

(3)In human libraries, the readers are likely to       .
A.deepen their understanding of people
B.enrich their own personal experiences

213744. (2023•高陵一中•高二下期中)     When faced with the decision to get out of bed or have a few more minutes of sleep, which do you choose?Believe it or not, that decision could make a world of difference in the rest of your day.
About 85 percent of Americans use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings, according to sleep researcher Till. And while there are no official numbers on snoozing (打盹),a quick survey of social media makes it clear that hitting the snooze button after the alarm goes off is a popular habit.
As to how the snooze button will affect your day, scientists have mixed opinions. Some scientists think people who hit the snooze button in the mornings are actually clever, creative and happy while some said that hitting the snooze button will ruin your life,or at least your day. "I feel that hitting the snooze button has got to be one of the worst things that ever happened to human sleep," researcher Jonathan said. "The chances of you 'snoozing' and actually experiencing a meaningful rest are close to zero."
According to some sleep experts, when hitting the snooze button, you are in fact confusing your body and mind, and throwing yourself into a deep state of being sleepy. The body needs some time to wake up,so,when returning to what will be a light sleep for a brief period of time, you are putting your body back into a sleep mode before waking it again. At that point your body won't know what it wants, resulting in a sort of half awaken state.
If you really want to take advantage of an alarm clock, the key is to form a healthy sleep cycle.Focus your efforts on getting enough sleep each night and waking up at the same time each day so that when your alarm goes off you feel rested.

C.It brings us a sense of satisfaction.
D.It makes people become lazy.
(3)What's the author's suggestion on using alarms?
A.Using an extra alarm.
B.Trying to relax ourselves.
C.Forming a good sleep habit.
D.Making use of willpower.

205256. (2021•阎良区•高一下期末) Plenty of science fiction (sci-fi) movies over the decades have shown us different versions of Mars. The truth about the Martian surface might be exciting because it's real. And with NASA's Mars 2020 mission set to launch this summer,we're facing more discovery.
So far, thanks to a decade of research enabled by NASA's Curiosity rover,we've learned that lakes, rivers streams and likely oceans used to appear on Mars. While its water disappeared over three billion years ago,it tells us that Mars used to be habitable. This knowledge confuses us because so far,we've seen no clear evidence of life there, not even a virus. But if Mars was once habitable, wouldn't it have life?NASA is now prepared to take the next step to answer this question with the launch of another rover (探测 器),Perseverance.Every time a rover goes to Mars,it just stays there, with no way to fly back home.So we have never brought rock or soil samples back from Mars.
Perseverance rover will change this. Its primary and unique purpose is to collect samples that a future spacecraft can return to Earth. These samples will tell us more about the geologic history of Mars than anything we've learned, which is already a lot.Since 2012,the Curiosity rover has traveled more than a dozen miles, making observations along the way with its 10 instruments.
Thanks to data from the Curiosity rovers Sample Analysis at Mars instrument,we know that Mars does indeed have organic materials. That's more complex than we expected to find on the surface of Mars. And that's exactly why we want to gather the most interesting samples and bring them back to Earth. We expect to find out much more about Mars once we get samples back from the Mars 2020 mission.

215150. (2016•西北大附中•高二下期中) Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it.They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
(31)        Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way.Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it.This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure,or sugar into the blood,etc.(32)
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
(33)        They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is,they say,"(34)        Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry.(35)

A.In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
B.They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.
C.Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.
D.Anger may cause you a cancer.
E.Do not express your anger while angry.
F.Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

(2017•长安区一中•高二下期中) "Sorry, but I don't agree with you…"This is usually followed by unbearable silence and angry tears.I've always found it difficult to disagree with someone because I don't want to lose a friend.I've found it even harder to accept it when someone disagrees with me,because my ego (自尊心) is hurt.
Before the other person gets a chance to explain why she disagrees with me,my usual response would be,"If you aren't able to see my point of view, then what you think isn't worth my time or consideration, either."But now I've come to realize that when a friend disagrees with me,sometimee is simply saying,"I don't agree with the way things are done."She still respects me as a person, and is only pointing out a better way to look at a matter. However, there may be times when my friend disagrees with me because I'm against the truth. That's when I need to listen to what she says.
I've learned that for me one way to help my friend is to be open and honest with the other to voice my thoughts and listen to the other carefully. While we can't control how a person will respond to our views,we must learn to disagree with our friends in love.We will never feel that we are better than the other person. And that will help us to be less emotional, and more objective in the way we express our opinions. In the same way,we can also stay open to feedback (反馈) from others, knowing that our friends may be correcting us in love.
Good friendships build each other up,sometimes through disagreements and honest opinions.Though I don't like being disagreed with,I'm starting to see the value of such disagreements.

A.be unhappy
B.argue with the friend

A.he does things in the wrong way
B.he doesn't tell the truth
C.he is respected by the friend D.he is against the truth
(4)What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A.How to keep friendship.
B.How to avoid hurting a friend.

214949. (2017•西安中学•高二下期中) Every day, hundreds of thousands of us visit coffee shops. While we drink our coffee,we may connect our smartphone to the shop's Wi-Fi network, and keep in touch with friends via services such as Facebook.
As well as socializing,we may use the time and free access to a wireless connection to get on top of our finances.Transferring money from your account to others'accounts is nothing more than a few taps on your screen.
But what coffee drinkers do not realize is that lurking(潜伏) among their fellow coffee-lovers are bank robbers.
Unknown to you, this modern form of bank robber is silently collecting all your private data. The only sign of his thievery is perhaps a little smile as your bank log-in details appear on his screen.
You'll only realize when you later go to a cash machine to withdraw some money, and discover that every penny in your account has been cleared out.
The common method for thieves is to use your smartphone's Wi-Fi connection. They rely on the fact that most of us are not careful about the security of networks we connect to.
For example, when you are in a coffee shop, your smartphone will present you with a list of available Wi-Fi networks that you can use to connect your phone to the Internet. Most of these networks are run by legitimate(合法的)companies, but sometimes they are actually created by a thief sitting nearby with little more than a laptop.
These networks are often given names, such as"Free Public Wi-Fi",which deceive smartphone users into logging in.On the surface, everything seems normal, and you will be able to connect just as you are with a legitimate Wi-Fi service.
However, because you have connected to a network controlled by a thief,he can monitor (监视) everything you do,enabling him to collect passwords and log-in details about your bank account.
