12. (本题10分)     Nearly 40 years ago,at the start of my career,I drove through a summer rainstorm to buy a copy of Henry David Thoreau's Walden.Thoreau,a 19th-century naturalist and philosopher, offered a sense of balance as I managed journalism's tight deadlines with the need for a break. While I don't live in a woodland cabin, repeated readings of Walden have taught me mindfulness principles that remain as useful today as they were nearly two centuries ago.
Although summer travel is a cherished tradition,I can't routinely seek mindfulness through distant getaways.Thoreau, who boasted about traveling "a good deal in Concord",found inspiration close to home.Following Thoreau's lead,I try to make time each morning to scan the bird feeders outside my home.Just a few minutes of this routine lowers my stress level and leaves me calmer for the day ahead.
Although Thoreau is best known for Walden,he also kept a journal that stretches to 14 volumes and some 2 million words.I long to practice journalizing as a kind of spiritual exercise in expressing the pulses and routines of life more fully.Although I'll never match Thoreau's diligence,I keep a small journal in my pocket, and having it near reminds me to notice little things.Journalizing helps me see my life as a story, slowing its pace so that I can engage more purposefully within each hour.
Though often regarded as a loner,Thoreau was known to take people along on his hikes.A recent kayak(皮划艇) club activity reminded me that fellowship inspires collective respect and surprise.I wouldn't have spotted a turtle kayaking if another kayaker hadn't pointed it out.As I pursue mindfulness, fellow travelers' support shows me that the hunger for mental centeredness is a shared human condition. It's why Thoreau alternated between privacy and society, recognizing that they could mutually support his desire to live with attentive purpose.

(1)What inspiration did the author get from Thoreau in Paragraph 2?
A.Keeping relaxed in the writing.
B.Seeking insights in the familiar.
C.Identifying birds for scientific recording.
D.Finding mindfulness from distant traveling.
(2)Why did the author keep a journal like Thoreau?
A.To live his life with a goal.
B.To write as a form of reflection.
C.To develop himself to be diligent.
D.To polish his sense of journalizing.
(3)What does the author highlight in the last paragraph?
A.Finding partners in mindfulness.
B.Desiring attention from society.
C.Appreciating endangered species.
D.Treating mindfulness as an individual pursuit.
(4)What is the main idea of the text?
A.The reasons behind Thoreau's decision to write Walden.
B.Thoreau's commitment to mindfulness and its significance.
C.The author's experience of living in the wild like Thoreau.
D.The calming influence of Thoreau's words on the author.
13. (本题10分)     Autonomous systems, including self-driving cars and robots, are rapidly becoming integral to our daily lives. However, these systems often face challenges in visual recognition across various environments such as bright sunlight, low light,or when objects mix into complex surroundings.Remarkably, nature might already hold the answer to this problem.
Cats are known for their excellent vision in both bright and dark settings.Their eyes are uniquely adapted for different lighting conditions:their pupils adjust to reduce brightness during the day, while at night, these pupils widen to allow more light in.Additionally,a reflective layer behind their retinas(视网膜),known as the tapetum lucidum, improves their night vision.
Inspired by the impressive abilities of cat vision,a team of researchers led by Professor Young Min Song at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST) has developed a new vision system using advanced lenses(透镜) and sensors modeled after cats' eyes. This system includes a slit-shaped aperture(狭缝状光圈) that, like a cat's daily pupil, blocks extra light and sharpens focus on essential objects. It also has a reflective layer similar to the tapetum lucidum, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions.
Published in Science Advances, this research marks a significant step forward in artificial vision, showing improved object detection and recognition abilities."Traditional robotic cameras struggle to identify objects in busy backgrounds, especially under changing light conditions,"Prof.Song explains."Our design enables robots to ignore unimportant details, concentrating only on key objects."Additionally, the system is energy-efficient,as it relies more on lens design than on heavy computer processing.
This innovative technology opens up exciting potential for real-world applications, potentially transforming robotic vision. With this advanced system, security robots and self-driving vehicles can move through complex environments and perform precise tasks with greater accuracy."From search-and-rescue missions to industrial monitoring, these advanced robotic eyes can assist or even replace human efforts in critical situations,"Prof.Song highlights.

(1)How do cats' eyes adapt to different lighting conditions?
A.By adjusting pupils and reflecting light.
B.By narrowing pupils and letting in light.
C.By using tapetum lucidum in bright light.
D.By focusing tapetum lucidum on familiar light.
(2)What is the purpose of the GIST research?
A.To create an advanced lens for eyes.
B.To improve the focus capability of cats.
C.To develop a reflective layer for dark situations.
D.To improve the performance of artificial vision.
(3)What is a feature of the new design according to paragraph 4?
A.It operates without consuming energy.
B.It requires extensive computer processing.
C.It prioritizes key objects in complex backgrounds.
D.It enhances the detection ability in dark conditions.
(4)Where can the design be applied according to Prof.Song?
A.Improved household care.
B.Precise classroom monitoring.
C.Enhanced sightseeing experiences.
D.Accurate emergency response actions.
14. (本题10分)     In one horrible film plot,Al eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like ChatGPT give bad guys the know-how to create destructive cyberweapons.
It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them. The idea that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative—no one yet knows how such a threat might materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky.Plenty of research needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.
Governments cannot ignore a technology that could change the world deeply.Regulators have been too slow in the past, but there is danger, too,in acting hurriedly. If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.
Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful "frontier" models.New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the "handful of companies",especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book.A focus on extreme risks is likely to make regulators careful of open -source models, which are freely available and can easily be revised.
The best that governments can do now is to set up the basic systems to study the technology and its potential risks, and ensure that those working on the problem have enough resources. As AI develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and consequently what the rule book should look like.A fully mature body could eventually take shape. But creating it will take time and reflection.

(1)What does the first paragraph function as?
A.An argument.
B.An explanation.
C.A comment.
D.A lead-in.
(2)What does the underlined word "speculative" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Theoretical.
B.Common.
C.Unique.

15. (本题10分) Developing Happiness:Strengthening Your Reward Sensitivity In our busy lives,we often pass up chances for joy.We might skip a birthday party or cancel a lunch date, thinking it's not worth the trouble. But this usually makes us feel even more down later. The secret to changing this is to strengthen"reward sensitivity". (1)
Reward sensitivity is like a muscle. It can grow stronger with regular practice. When we train ourselves to notice and value positive emotions,we can become happier. (2)       They often struggle to feel pleasure,a condition called anhedonia(unable to experience joy).A 2023 study showed that therapy focusing on positive emotions helps mental health more than treatments just reducing negative symptoms.
A great way to strengthen reward sensitivity is to plan a small, fun activity daily. (3)       Describe it in detail, focusing on the feelings and experiences. This practice, known as "savoring(尽情享受),"makes positive feelings stronger and gives you more motivation to seek similar experiences in the future.
    (4)       Instead of simply labeling an experience "good"",use more precise words like "thrilled,""inspired,or"peaceful".Sharing positive moments with others can make these moments even more meaningful, strengthening social bonds and spreading happiness.
It's important to remember that embracing happiness doesn't mean ignoring pain. (5)       By using these strategies in your daily life, you can cultivate a stronger sense of reward sensitivity and change how you experience and pursue happiness.

A.Afterward, take a moment to recall the experience.
B.It's the ability to find and truly enjoy positive experiences.

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned coal stove.A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and classmates arrived.
One morning they arrived to find the schoolhouse in flames.
They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the burning building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to the nearby county hospital.
From his bed the terribly burned,semi-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would possibly die for the terrible fire had damaged the lower half of his body.
But the brave boy didn't want to die.He made up his mind that he would survive.Somehow,to the amazement of the physician,he did survive. When the mortal(致命的) danger was past,he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. The mother was told that since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in his legs,he was doomed (注定)to be unable to walk properly with no use at all of his lower limbs.
Once more the brave boy made up his mind.He would walk. But unfortunately from the waist down,he had no motor ability. His thin legs just dangled (悬垂) there, all but lifeless.
Ultimately he was released from the hospital.Every day his mother would massage his little legs, but there was no feeling,no control, nothing.Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever.
When he wasn't in bed,he was confined(离不开) to a wheelchair. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard with a fence around its edge to get some fresh air.
