12. (本题6分)     Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river.People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade.New York City, for example,is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time.Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896,Dawson,Canada,was unmapped wilderness(荒野).But gold was discovered there in 1897,and two years later,it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris.People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩)once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip.Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold,4,000 got rich.About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were,Dawson was never comfortable.Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.Today, people still come and go - to see where the Canadian gold rush happened.Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City - its present population is 762.

A.Its business culture.
B.Its small population.
C.Its geographical position.
D.Its favourable climate.
(2)What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A.Two-thirds of them stayed there.

D.Half of them died.
(3)What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?
A.They found the city too crowded.
B.They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
C.They were unable to stand the winter.
D.They were short of food.
(4)What is the text mainly about?
A.The rise and fall of a city.
B.The gold rush in Canada.
C.Journeys into the wilderness.
D.Tourism in Dawson.
13. (本题6分) A typical lion tamer (驯兽师) in people's mind is an entertainer holding a whip (鞭) and a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it's mostly for show.In reality,it's the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion's face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g.lose weight, start a business, travel more)- only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress?
This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can't focus or that we're focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.
It doesn't have to be that way.Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this:All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started.Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go,something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become …take immediate action. If you're clear about where you want to go,the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.

(1)Why does the lion tamer use a chair?
A.To trick the lion.
B.To show off his skills.
C.To get ready for a fight.
D.To entertain the audience.
(2)In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?
A.They feel puzzled over choices.
B.They hold on to the wrong things.
C.They find it hard to make changes.
D.They have to do something for show.
(3)What is the author's attitude towards the experts mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.Tolerant.
B.Doubtful.
C.Respectful.
D.Supportive.
(4)When the world is "waving a chair in your face",you're advised to
A.wait for a better chance
B.break your old habits
C.make a quick decision
D.ask for clear guidance
14. (本题6分) The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research.Recent studies have found positive effects.A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors(传感器) printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano,a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants grow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables.Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology,Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn tree into self-powered street lamps(灯).
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed (消耗)in the US.Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源) - such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway- a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).
Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.

(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.A new study of different plants.
B.A big fall in crime rates.
C.Employees from various workplaces.
D.Benefits from green plants.
(2)What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?
A.To detect plants' lack of water
B.To change compositions of plants
C.To make the life of plants longer.
D.To test chemicals in plants.
(3)What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A.They will speed up energy production.
B.They may transmit electricity to the home.
C.They might help reduce energy consumption.
D.They could take the place of power plants.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Can we grow more glowing plants?
B.How do we live with glowing plants?
C.Could glowing plants replace lamps?
D.How are glowing plants made pollution-free?

In his new class,Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations,he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to,which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.

Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party,Li Ming watched his classmates laugh.dance.and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out,not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun,but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
