12. (本题8分) Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later?Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain,in rats at least.
"This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important-not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive(认知的)development during ageing," says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto,Canada. "In humans,it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer's symptoms(阿茨海默氏症),possibly to the point of preventing them."
Wojtowicz's team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks.Around four months later-when the rats had reached middle age-the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.
Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations:exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room.
The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same proportion of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn't remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.
"The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we're young,at least for rats, has influences on brain and cognitive health-in the form of better memories-when we're older," says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that,in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.

(4)What is the author's attitude towards the animal study?
A.Negative.

13. (本题8分) Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.
We experience this tiredness in two ways:as start-up fatigue(疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case,we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it,the more tired we feel.Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply:always handle the most difficult job first.Years ago,I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors.Applying my own rule,I determined to write them in alphabetical(按字母顺序),never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day's work with the difficult task of essay-writing.Experience proved that the rule works.
Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.Though willing to get started,we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work,we fail again and again. In such a situation,I work as hard as I can-then let the unconscious take over.
When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》),I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles.Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted,I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved.I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me.Relieved,I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hour later,I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind.In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind provided correct at every step.Though I worked as hard as before,I felt no fatigue.Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings,I believe, must try to succeed.Success, then, means never feeling tired.

(1)People with start-up fatigue are most likely to        .
A.work hard
B.delay tasks
C.seek help
D.accept failure
(2)What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?
A.Dealing with the hardest task first.
B.Building up physical strength.
C.Leaving out the toughest ideas.
D.Writing essays in strict order.
(3)On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A.Before starting a difficult task.
B.After finding a way out.
C.If the job is rather boring.
D.When all the solutions fail.
(4)What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Success Is Built upon Failure
B.How to Handle Performance Fatigue
C.Getting over Fatigue:A Way to Success
D.Fatigue:An Early Sign of Health Problem
三、短文填空(1小题共10分)
14. (本题10分) Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic.(1)        Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won't be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong.(2)        Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic(诊断的) tool.
Ozcan's invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use.In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don't have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. (3)        With Ozcan's mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
   (4)        His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology -- mobile phones -- Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore,it can be used effectively almost anywhere. (5)

A.Another reason that Ozcan's invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
B.Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die because of the delay.
C.People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.
D.Ozcan's simple,cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
E.This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
