Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject:Slimming down classics?

Mr.
Handsome
2007-5-12
6:34 AM
Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cut-down classics (经典著作),is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L.Tolstoy,M.Mitchell and C.Bronte.Now,each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages per cent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and,in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads"in half the time",will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.

Mr.
Edwards
2007-5-12
9:40 AM
Well,I'm publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention,Mr.Handsome.
I must say,the idea developed from a game of"shame"in my office. Each of us was required to confess (承认) to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping (跳读) Jane Eyre.We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.
As a leading publishing house,we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it's not as if we're withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them.
Ms.Weir

11:35 AM
I'm director of the online book club www.lovereading.co.uk
Mr.Edwards,I think your shortened editions is a breath of fresh air.I'm guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it's just so long.I'd much rather read two 300-page books than one 600-page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics!
Mr.
Crockatt
2007-5-12
4:38 PM
I'm from the London independent bookshop Crockatt & Powell.
In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics?I'm afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don't have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don't read a shortened version and kid yourself it's the real thing.
(1)According to the message board,Orion Books
A.opposes the reading of original classics
B.is embarrassed for cutting down classics
C.thinks cut-down classics have a bright future
D.is cautious in its decision to cut down classics

A.make them easier to read
B.meet a large demand in the market
C.increase the sales of literary books

A.speaks highly of the cut-down classics
B.shows her love for original classics
C.feels guilty of not reading the classics
D.disapprove of shortening the classics
(4)Mr.Crockatt seems to imply that
A.reading the classic works is a confusing attempt
B.shortening the classics does harm to the original
C.publishing the cut-down classics is a difficult job
D.editing the classic works satisfies children's needs.
12. (本题8分) Scientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do,the results may range from the disastrous to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago.Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen.
The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country's bees.He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated (交配) it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist's name, had a total success on his hands.
Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places.
But worse was to follow.Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings (叮) ,began to attack its neighbors - cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself.A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings.
This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.

A.have caused a serious trouble
B.have proved to be wrong
C.are not yet certain

(2)The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to
A.increase the amount of honey in Brazil
B.make Brazilian bees more easy-going
C.increase the number of bees in Brazil

(3)Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees' attacking personalities?
A.Their production of honey.
B.Their hard work.
C.Their living environment.
D.Their bad temper.
(4)The last paragraph implies that
A.the bees have been driven to Central and North America
B.the bees may bring about trouble in more countries
C.the bees must be stopped from moving north
D.the bees prefer to live in Brazil
13. (本题6分) Instagram is containing so many photos of food-now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks.
I always thought people's taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK,I'd probably do it too.'The Picture House' is the world's first pay-by-photo restaurant-you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!
The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant (巨人)Birds Eye,who came up with the idea to cash in on people's addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho,London for three days in May,and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for,if they photo and Instagram it.
The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye's'Food for Life'campaign,a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food."Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments-from the everyday to the special,"said marketing director Margaret Jobling.
The reaction to The Picture House has been great so far.And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way.Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses.Last year,in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.ziyuanku.com

A.a restaurant free of charge

A.raise the price of frozen food
B.attract more customers
C.create a new social media trend
D.reward the regular customers
(3)Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?
A.No Need to Pay.
B.The Pop-up Diner.
C.Pay by Picture.
D.Food for Life.
14. (本题8分) A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind:How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource,as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?
Avoiding temptation(诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control,which is called the "out of sight, out of mind" principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers are less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks,in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir(储备) of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily.Researchers don't believe that one's willpower is ever completely exhausted.Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down.High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.
Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱) to being exhausted in the first place.Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use.But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term.Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.
The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year's Eve is the worst possible approach.Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas,so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time.In other words, don't try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time.Taking goals one by one is a better approach.Once a good habit is in place,Baumeister says, you'll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior.Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won't require making decisions at all.
Many questions about the nature of self-control remain to be answered by further research.Yet it seems likely that with clear goals, good self-monitoring and a little practice, you can train your willpower to stay strong in the face of temptation.

(1)From the studies in the passage we learn that
A.people have unlimited self-control
B.high motivation ensures one's success
C.willpower is hardly completely exhausted
D.too many temptations often lead to failure
(2)The underlined phrase "tap into" in Paragraph 3 most probably means
A.make use of
B.run out of

A.to prove the long-term effects of willpower
B.to show the significance of regular exercise
C.to argue that self-control can be easily used up
D.to explain the benefits of practicing self-control
(4)To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?
A. "I will give up dessert and do exercise."

C. "I will keep myself from any temptation."
