After flight engineer training,Howard waipped off to Europe. On his maiden flight, his plane waot down over Austria. The entire crew of eight men landed safely. But a farmer found Howard hiding in his barn and turned him over to a prison of war camp in Barth,Germany. It was freezing and the men almost starved to death eating the guards' garbage.
Hungry and homesick,Howard coped the only way he knew how.He drew a comic strip. The book, made of cigarette wrappers bound together with scrap metal, was sent around the camp.Every couple of days he would add a new panel. One panel at a time would be passed around the whole camp. And they'd have something to look forward to.
After an entire year of this, they woke one morning to find their guards gone. They fled and Howard finally got to go home.Just lucky to get out alive,he left the book behind.
Back home in California,Howard soon had a wife and kids to feed so he had to set aside his dream of becoming an artist. He took a job as a gardener instead.
Morgan Weistling shared his father's artistic gifts. At 15 his parents sent him to art school. And Howard got to see his son become a well-known painter before he died in 2002.That's how, seven decades after the war, when a stranger in New York googled the name "Weistling," he found Morgan online.
"I get an email from a gentleman and he says, 'I think I may have some drawings your father did when he was a POW (prisoner of war) in World War II,'" Morgan recalls. "'Would you like them?' And I just stared at that email and started crying."
Luckily Howard had engraved his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan.A couple of days later when it arrived in California,Morgan couldn't believe it. 13. (本题8分) I used to spend the second half of Sunday fearing Monday morning.Over the years, little tweaks to my routine have changed things to the point that I am in the "I Love Mondays" camp. Here's what I've found that works:
Consider Sunday nights your warm-up for Monday.Get everything you need for the morning ready to go.If mornings are a struggle…give it a try at least for Mondays and see if it makes a difference.Once that's done, consider a special "Sunday Night Only" calming down ritual (惯例).It might be tea and a favorite TV show,or it might be a long hot bath and reading until you're ready for sleep.Whatever it is,enjoy this Monday morning warm-up,and consider sleeping a little earlier than you're used to,in order to help with the second step.
One of my favorite parts of the weekend is sleeping in and waking up when I'm ready instead of fighting with the alarm for "Just five more minutes!" Sleeping a little early on Sunday night can help with getting up a little early on Monday morning - not to pack more into your morning to-do list, but to give yourself time to take it slowly. When you have a little extra time in the morning, you can gently settle into the day and keep that weekend feeling of ease as you start your new week.
Find a theme for the week.Every Monday,I post an inspiring quote or saying. These are intentional! Each week,as part of my Sunday night calming down time,I consider what I'd like to focus on in the coming week, and look for a quote that's a good fit to strengthen it.
What are you excited about for the new week? What problem-solving opportunities do you have? What's been hanging over your head undone from last week?During your preparation time on Sunday night, think about the week ahead and mark a few things that you want to get done and can reasonably accomplish. If possible, schedule at least one of them for Monday,so you've started your week off feeling successful, instead of feeling like there's a mountain of tasks ahead of you.The work is the same either way,but our attitudes are always within our control.
When you are intentionally creating a life you love,Mondays begin to feel less like drudgery(单调乏味的苦差事),and more like a beautiful start!

(1)The underlined word "tweaks" is the closest in meaning to
A.mistakes
B.problems
C.adjustments
D.encouragements
(2)What's the benefit of getting up early enough on Monday morning?
A.You can get to your office and start work in time.
B.You can have enough time to sit with your tea or coffee.
C.You can have the weekend feeling longer by starting slowly.
D.You can have enough time to make a to-do list for the week.
(3)What does the author want to indicate in Para.5?
A.Be confident to solve the problems.
B.Look for opportunities for the week.
C.Arrange your tasks well for the week.
D.Positive attitude means a happy Monday.
(4)What might be the best title for this passage?
A.Monday Morning Warm Up
B.How to Love Your Mondays
C.How to Spend Your Mondays
D.Troublesome Monday Disease
14. (本题8分) Even though vaccination(接种疫苗) is a powerful defense against disease, some voices are against it.In a recent letter, the American Medical Association(AMA) urged big social media including Amazon,Facebook and Google to take action to defend medical science on their platforms.
It said that vaccine-preventable diseases that do harm to the public health like measles(麻疹) are on the rise.Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30% in 2017 compared to 2016,with the largest increases seen among nations in the Americas,Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.Vaccine-preventable diseases are increasing largely because many people are unwilling to get vaccinated. And some of these people even encourage others to refuse vaccination. So this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the anti-vaccination movement a top-10 health threat.
"Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease - it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 15 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved," WHO said.
A research article published in 1998 in a medical journal suggested a link between a vaccine and the development of autism(自闭症) in young children.Although the research has been suspected and many other studies have proved that vaccinations do not cause autism, the article is still impressing people strongly today.Another reason for the growth in the anti-vaccination movement is widespread misinformation on social media, which can turn people against vaccination. If a concerned parent consistently sees information in their Newsfeed that casts doubt on the safety of vaccines,it could cause them to disregard the advice of their children's physicians and public health experts and refuse to follow the recommended vaccination schedule. So access to true information about vaccine safety is badly needed.

(1)What does the AMA require social media to do on their platforms?
A.Unite to develop new vaccines.
B.Stop vaccine misinformation.
C.Give up the anti-vaccination movement.
D.Introduce vaccine-preventable diseases.
(2)Why does the author mention the measles cases?
A.To declare measles can be prevented.
B.To prove vaccination doesn't work well.
C.To show the result of anti-vaccination.
D.To explain the reason for avoiding vaccination.
(3)Which of the following DOESN'T play a role in the anti-vaccination movement?
A.The costs of vaccination.
B.People's concerns over vaccine safety.
C.A research relating vaccination to autism.
D.Misinformation spread on social media platforms.
(4)What is the author's attitude towards vaccination?
A.Doubtful
B.Ambiguous
C.Positive
D.Negative
三、短文填空(1小题共10分)
15. (本题10分) Art galleries are places in which artists can display all types of works of art, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, etc. (1)       At the same time, however, each artwork must be protected from exposure to too much light since that can cause works to fade and therefore get ruined.(2)
The most common form of lighting used to light up artwork is indoor spotlights on tracks attached to the ceiling near where the work is being displayed.(3)        It permits the lights to be moved more easily when the light patterns require adjusting.Recessed(嵌入的) lights in walls and ceilings can be useful so long as they are not fixed in place but can instead be easily moved to create ideal light patterns. Most art gallery directors state that a combination of tracked and recessed light equipment is ideal because the tracked lights focus directly on the artwork while the recessed lights are used on the nearby walls to provide a surrounding light source.(4)
How to angle the lights depends upon the height of the ceiling and the size of the artwork.Caution must be taken to avoid creating too many areas with shadows or to have the lights cause a glare on the artwork.Besides, the lightould not be bare bulbs burning directly on the artwork but should be made in some way to make the lighting softer.According to experts, low voltage(电压)bulbs are the best to use when lighting artwork.(5)       Thus artwork should be placed in a room where sunlight can't directly hit it.

A.It can make the displays attractive.
B.Using tracked lighting is beneficial.
C.Light plays a key role in art galleries.
D.This light source can better improve the mood surrounding the work.
E.To better improve their appearance, the display area needs to be well lit.
F.Finding a happy medium between not enough light and too much of it requires considerable skill and experience.
G.Above all, natural light should be avoided since direct sunlight will damage artwork, particularly paintings, over time.
