   Freshwater Beach
Freshwater Beach is the location where surfing was first introduced to Australia in 1915.The beach is only 350 meters long and is a popular destination for surfers. The beach is protected and therefore provides a quiet swimming experience away from the hustle and bustle of its busy neighboring beaches.
   Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach,Australia's most famous beach,is more than 100 meters wide and over 3 kilometers long, which allows plenty of space for the large number of tourists and locals. On a sunny day every grain of sand is covered with bodies, with crowds pouring into nearby bars and cafes.Parking near the beach is impossible. It's also the perfect spot to see a sunset and the scene of family parties during summer.
   Clovelly Beach
As one of the best options for surfing and exploring what hides beneath the water's surface,Clovelly, noted for its unique narrow bay between two rocky ridges,is a popular destination for swimmers. It's a good base where you can check out diving routes through the waters,or take a coastal walk to Bondi.
   Palm Beach
It's the scene of the long-running Home and Away TV series and endless celebrity spotting.A salt water lake affords great views, typical of beaches on the north side of the harbor. On a nice day,Palm Beach is a postcard-perfect sand destination.

12. (本题8分) A mild-mannered cat by day,at night Rusty was just the opposite.Often,Bill and I would lie in bed quarreling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.
So,instead,we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do.And always in the morning,if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give.Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, " Do it." My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butter to decide we didn't have much choice.
That night,I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water.Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor.According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink, but they won't do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.
Next,I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each.According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter,he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place,I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting.Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal.A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally,Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.

13. (本题8分) California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s,according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent;in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre,an ecologist who was the lead author of the study.Woodcutters targeted big trees.Housing development pushed into the woods.Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010,McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
Since the 1930s,McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air,and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.

(1)What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B.The increasing variety of California big trees.
C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.
(2)Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?
A.Ecological studies of forests.
B.Banning woodcutting.
C.Limiting housing development.
D.Fire control measures.
(3)What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre?
A.Inadequate snowmelt.
B.A longer dry season.
C.A warmer climate.
D.Dampness of the air.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.California's Forests:Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?
B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?
D.Patrick McIntyre:Grow More Big Trees in California
14. (本题8分) Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center mapped brain changes after a year of aerobic (有氧的) workouts and uncovered a potentially significant process:Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain associated with memory,
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory issues improve cognition (认知),a finding that could guide future Alzheimer's disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study, researchers followed 30 participants who were 60 or older and had memory problems.Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches(伸展运动). "We've shown that even when your memory starts to fade, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle," said Binu Thomas,a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. "The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year;the other group showed slight change.Brain imaging of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function."
Many teams across the world are trying to determine if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss.Evidence is growing that it could at least play a small role in delaying or reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease. For example,a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of vital nerve fibers in the brain called white matter related to memory.
"Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together," Thomas says. "But we've seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong benefits for our brains as well as our hearts."

(1)What is the study mainly about?
A.Old people have memory issues.
B.Exercise improves memory.
C.Aerobic workouts benefit mental health.
D.Alzheimer's disease can be cured.
(2)What happened to participants after one-year aerobic exercise?
A.Earlier memories were refreshed.
B.Memory scoreowed very small change.
C.Brain imaging remained the same.
D.More blood flew into memory-related areas.
(3)What does the underlined word "retrogression" mean in the fourth paragraph?
A.Growth.
B.Recovery.
C.Decline.
D.Extension.
(4)What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Further research work requires doing.
B.More people experience memory loss.
C.Mystery of brain blood flow has been solved.
D.Signs of memory loss can be discovered earlier.
