12. (本题6分) The forests in eastern Zimbabwe supply the country with wood and most of its fresh fruit. But the removal of large numbers of trees and use of fire to clear land have caused a lot of damage to the area.Officials say Zimbabwe lost more than 1.5 million hectares of forest last year. This is mostly because of local people cutting the trees for firewood or setting fires in forested areas to make hunting easier.
But now a non- profit group, called Environment Africa,is trying to improve the situation,Environment Africa is teaching farmers to raise bees. The group is working in the Mutasa district, near the country's border with Mozambique. And it has already helped about 1,500 farmers.
Beniamin Chatambura is one such farmer. He has set up about 250 beehives(蜂箱)near his home.Chatambura sells the honey the bees produce and uses the money to feed his family. He likes having bees on his land because he insects help him and the forest. "The trees provide us with flowers",he says. "That is the food for the bees to produce the honey. If there were a way,I would like more land to plant more different types of trees."
Lawrence Nyagwande is with Environment Africa. He says most of the farmers are earning as much as S1,000 a month by selling honey. The average government worker in Zimbabwe earns just about ﹩500 a month.
Nyagwande says,"Beekeeping is helping improve the country's forests. Now if you look around, the forest in Mutasa is now improving because people are also working together with the nearby timber(木材)industries to fight the forest fires."

13. (本题8分) Halloween is my favorite holiday because you don't have to buy anyone presents, but you get to dress up as whoever you want to be,all while getting free candy.Unfortunately,as I get older,I notice fewer trick-or-treaters at my door. Some Halloween traditions, especially the tradition of trick-or-treating,seem to be dying out.
I remember starting high school and still wanting to go trick-or-treating,but I wasn't supposed to.But now kids who are still young enough to go trick-or-treating seem like they don't even want to go.They either doubt they're cool to get dressed up,their parents are too worried about poisoned candy or bad people,or they're simply too lazy. There are simple solutions to the first two. There are always cool clothes, and parents can easily accompany their children to provide safety,as well as to inspect the candy that's handed out.I just wish people would get out and trick-or-treat like they used to,even though that means having parents and teenagers knocking at my door.
Money could be another potential reason for reducing the desire to go trick-or-treating.I understand that the rule is that you have to dress up to get candy and some clothes can be expensive. But there are many inexpensive ideas. All you need is makeup(化妆品)and brown or green clothes to be a goddess or an animal. At the dollar store, there are plastic swords and suits of armor if you want to be a knight(骑士).You can also use makeup to be basically anything:a vampire(吸血鬼),a skeleton,Frankenstein,a werewolf,a zombie.
Watching Halloween movies and passing out candy on my doorstep is fine enough, but I do wish more kids would knock on my door.

(1)What makes the author disappointed?
A.Halloween seems to be dying out.
B.Trick-or-treating is becoming unpopular.
C.Parents consider candy to be unhealthy for kids.
D.High school students are not allowed to play trick or-treating.
(2)Which of the following is one of the solutions according to Paragraph 2?
A.Choosing inexpensive clothes.
B.Educating teenagers about safety.
C.Just knocking on the author's door.
D.Playing trick-or-treating together with adults.
(3)What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Money shouldn't be an excuse.
B.Getting suitable clothes is a big challenge.
C.You can dress up as whoever you want to be.
D.Few people have the desire to go trick or treating.
(4)Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
A.We ought to give up some Halloween traditions.
B.Kidould be encouraged to play trick or treating.
C.Makeup is the most important part of Halloween.
D.Parents don't have to worry about children s safety.
14. (本题8分) Although there is growing research into the negative effect that screen-based technology can have on wellbeing, the trick technology companies have somehow played is that they have made it our problem, not theirs. For example,it is ridiculous that we blame young people for being addicted to their apps when the simple truth is that they are designed to be addictive. In the world of apps, addiction is what brings in money.
Whether you run a video service,a news site or a mobile game, certainly your product will have an effect on the mental health of your users-negative or positive. But the sad reality is that if you are not optimizing that effect,it tends to be the former. The reason why so much technology doesn't support wellbeing is that wellbeing was not a consideration in its design.
An important area for improvement is notifications(通知).Notifications are a great example of a feature that's great for the product but bad for the user, since not only do they make us less focused but they also cause anxiety about the things we've missed,a symptom of addiction. There is very little good about an inbox icon(收件箱图标)showing a bright red circle with a high number on it.Notifications can be made friendlier by not showing them in real time. One idea is to show the level of unread messages through the weight of the app name.So if you had lots of emails, your Mail app would be very bold(粗体的),but if you didn't have any,it would be lighter. In this way, less attention will be required.
Though it sounds challenging, finally money will talk.It is possible to make changes to products that don't damage their primary income models.Changes could be made that help us feel be better about ourselves. When a company becomes more wellbeing-positive,they add a competitive difference and become more attractive.

(1)What can be concluded from the first paragraph?
A.Young people can be tricked easily.
B.Screen-based technology is negative.
C.The addiction problem can't be solved.
D.Tech companies are to blame for addiction.
(2)Which of the following can replace the underlined word "optimizing"?
A.explaining
B.improving
C.discovering
D.admitting
(3)How can the apps reduce the negative effects according to the author?
A.By removing the inbox icon.
B.By limiting people's screen time.
C.By making notifications less eye-catching.
D.By informing the users of messages in no time.
(4)What does the author think of wellbeing-positive companies?
A.They will enjoy the benefit finally.
B.They will have an uncertain future.
C.They will do good to the minority.
D.They will change income models.
