219826. (2020•高陵一中•高一上一月) The forests in eastern Zimbabwe supply the country with wood and most of its fresh fruit. But the removal of large numbers of trees and use of fire to clear land have caused a lot of damage to the area.Officials say Zimbabwe lost more than 1.5 million hectares of forest last year. This is mostly because of local people cutting the trees for firewood or setting fires in forested areas to make hunting easier.
But now a non- profit group, called Environment Africa,is trying to improve the situation,Environment Africa is teaching farmers to raise bees. The group is working in the Mutasa district, near the country's border with Mozambique. And it has already helped about 1,500 farmers.
Beniamin Chatambura is one such farmer. He has set up about 250 beehives(蜂箱)near his home.Chatambura sells the honey the bees produce and uses the money to feed his family. He likes having bees on his land because he insects help him and the forest. "The trees provide us with flowers",he says. "That is the food for the bees to produce the honey. If there were a way,I would like more land to plant more different types of trees."
Lawrence Nyagwande is with Environment Africa. He says most of the farmers are earning as much as S1,000 a month by selling honey. The average government worker in Zimbabwe earns just about ﹩500 a month.
Nyagwande says,"Beekeeping is helping improve the country's forests. Now if you look around, the forest in Mutasa is now improving because people are also working together with the nearby timber(木材)industries to fight the forest fires."
This project has caught the attention of the government.Violet Makoto represents Zimbabwe's Forestry Commission,a government agency that works to protect forests. She says the commission hopes local people will take up beekeeping and end the use of fire to clear land.

A.Assist local farmers to sell honey at a high price.
B.Help farmers make a living through beekeeping.
C.Plant more different types of trees with farmers.

212763. (2025•交大附中•高二下期中)     Global warming is mainly caused by the increased emission of greenhouse gases,in particular carbon dioxide produced by power stations that use huge amounts of fossil fuel to supply us with electricity. These greenhouse gases have an average lifetime in the atmosphere of50 to 200 years. This means that even if we stopped the emission of greenhouse gases completely tomorrow, global warming would still continue for decades to come.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) records the energy consumption worldwide and produces a forecast for the next 25 years. In their last energy outlook published in 2006,IEA predicts a strong increase of the carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 as a consequence of the increasing demand for energy worldwide.Additionally,IEA investigated to which extent the above-mentioned emissions of CO2could be prevented if politics applied strict measures. One of many measures investigated was massive facilitation and, incentives (激励) for building additional nuclear power plants.
Nuclear energy is used to generate electrical power without any sort of fossil fuel involved in the process.Therefore,CO2 emission-can indeed be reduced,if electricity power plants driven by fossil fuels were replaced by nuclear power plants.Yet,the application of nuclear power is highly risky and problematic;and so the problem of CO2 emissions must not be looked at independently of all other risks and problems.
Some critics claim that nuclear energy's emissions can compare to those of fossil fuels when the life cycle impacts of nuclear power are considered.Although nuclear power plants do not release greenhouse gases when generating electricity, certain processes used to build and fuel the plants do,such as transporting the fuel to the plants in trucks. However, dozens of studieow that nuclear plants, life cycle impacts are actually more comparable to those of renewable energy,e.g.wind and solar, and far less than those of coal-or natural gas-fired power plants.
In the end,we can say that nuclear energy could significantly contribute to reducing the cause of global warming.Having said that,it can also be a highly risky option if we shut the eyes to the many risks of nuclear power.

(1)What can be inferred about greenhouse gases from paragraph 1?
A.They can be restricted within a short time.
B.They will reduce people's average lifetime.
C.They will keep increasing for decades to come.
D.They have a lasting impact on global warming.
(2)What is the purpose of the IEA's investigation?
A.To analyse the impact of global warming.
B.To identify ways to reduce CO2 emissions.
C.To predict future energy consumption worldwide.
D.To promote construction of nuclear power plants.
(3)What is the author's attitude towards nuclear energy?
A.Tolerant.
B.Objective.
C.Disapproving.
D.Conservative.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

203573. (2025•临潼区•高一上期末)     An adult African elephant consumes about 223 liters of water and 3,080 pounds of roots, grass and fruit daily. That's like having 634 cans of soda and 1,200 hamburgers every day. This keeps them moving thousands of miles across Africa each year.Elephants usually migrate between March and May.Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food.Male elephants live alone,so they don't use resources as quickly as the females.Instead, they migrate during their mating cycle. When the females pack their trunks,so do the males.
During migration, elephants face short water supplies and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number-one problem.Poachers(偷猎者) kill 35,000 elephants each year for ivory. Many African farmers build fences(栅栏) to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths.Traffic roads affect elephant migration, too.During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.
Scientists, wildlife organizations and governments cooperate to find solutions for Africa's elephants."To unlock the secret of where elephants move and how they move,we place collars(项圈)with a satellite unit inside,"Dr.Michael Chase says.GPS collars help map which routes elephants use most so that countries can establish protected elephant passages.
Locals come in as well.James Isiche,East Africa Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says,"We have got the community on our side by a project;they've agreed to partner with us to conserve elephants."The local community run wildlife parks to attract tourists."This project helps us take care of both the wildlife and our cows,""says Sikira,a tribal elder in Maasai,Kenya.Protecting elephant migration routes allows these gentle giants to survive.

201845. (2024•西安一中•二模)     A carbon footprint is only one component of the broader ecological footprint. An ecological footprint compares the population's consumption of resources and land with the planet's ability to regenerate. The Earth's ecological footprint is currently 23 percent over capacity. It takes about one year and two months to regenerate what we consume in a year.
Carbon footprints help people keep track of changes.Because footprints quantify an amount of carbon that increases or decreases based on energy use, they let people know that a new hybrid car or home insulation (隔离) helps.Transportation accounts for 33 percent of CO2 emissions in the United States,so many people try to lower their mileage (里程).Some walk or bike whenever possible;others take public transport.Home energyuse accounts for 21 percent of U.S.CO2 emissions,so it helps to have an efficient home.Setting the thermostat (恒温器) at a moderate temperature and installing double-paned windows lowers energy costs.
Of course, individual efforts can go only so far.Cutting CO2 and other greenhouse gases down to safer levels requires significant government regulation.Lessening carbon footprints does let people see where they are and how they can change. Those who want to accept personal responsibility for their emissions can track their own reductions and change their habits.
Because carbon calculators ask for only rough estimates,it's easy for investigators to approximate the footprints of celebrities and politicians.Analysts hope to uncover high-profile figures, especially those who promote environmentalism.Although performer Madonna and other celebrities have been accused of flying frequently, former vice president Al Gore has drawn the harshest accusations. The Gores' spokesperson did not deny that but emphasized that the couple subscribes to green power.

(1)How long can the Earth produce what we need in a year?        ?
A.2 months.
B.12 months.
C.14 months.
D.23 months.

A.Why people are worried about CO2 emissions.
B.How individuals can help to lower CO2 emissions.
C.Where most CO2 emissions come from in the United States.
D.What measures have been taken to cut down CO2 emissions.
(3)What is still needed to cut greenhouse gases down to safer levels?        ?
A.The participation of the public.
B.The development of new equipment.
C.The changes of our living habits.
D.The powerful efforts of the government.
(4)Why do investigators estimate the footprints of famous people easily?        ?
A.Because they have mastered methods.
B.Because it doesn't call for much accuracy.
C.Because famous people are easy to approach.
D.Because new technology has advanced greatly.

Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors from the world,a large number of specieare our urban areas. (1)       .
Because cities are built for humans, they do not always provide suitable habitats for wildlife.(2)       But when we cut grass or plant flowers,we destroy natural habitats.
However, our actions sometimes help other species. When a bridge in Austin,Texas was repaired, engineers added small gap s running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was the home of thousands of bats. (3)        Now,they have come to value their winged neighbours. The bats are a tourist attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.
    (4)       The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is a good example. The park used native plants and created open, natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo. (5)       .
Another example is a tall"Birdscraper"building in New York, which is in the middle of a lake.Birds would sit on it,and their droppings would fall into the water to feed water plants which would then create oxygen through photosynthesis(光合作用).
Only if we learn to share our space, can we become better neighbors to the wildlife around us.

A.Therefore,we should learn to exist in harmony with nature.
B.Instead of being kept in cages, wildlife can move about freely.
C.At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them.
D There are also structures built with the objective of bringing wildlife into the city.
E.As our cities spread,we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors.
F.In the past, bats always disturbed the life of people there and caused a lot of trouble to them.
G.For example, most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful.

214035. (2022•周至四中•高一下期中) Picky(挑剔的)eaters may have good reasons for their behavior. No matter why your child has become picky, how you handle the situation can affect his or her future. Therefore, you should know the following reasons for picky children first of all.
Neophobia is common in children;it often happens at the dinner table. Some children just refuse to try new food because they don't know what it will taste like, while others dislike new food before even smelling it.Some children take it to the extreme and will only eat a few foods that they like.Psychologist Dr.Elizabeth Capaldi says that,by the time children reach the age of two, they have formed their own eating habits that they don't want to be disturbed by new offering at the table.
A newly published study led by Dr.Lucy Cooke of University College London showed that picky eating in children results from genetic(遗传的)and environmental causes. The research, which followed the eating habits of 5,390 pairs of twins between the ages of 8 and 11,found that about 75% of the neophobia in the children was from their parents, while 25% was due to the influence of environment.
Children grow at a high speed during their first year, but that fast-paced growth tends to slow down by their second year. When children are not experiencing one of those fast growth periods, their body needs less energy;and that results in(导致)a smaller appetite(胃口).When children are not hungry, they tend to enjoy only food they like. They refuse new food and food that is not their favorite. Some children will limit the amount of food to only one kind, like hamburgers or pancakes, leaving all the other foods untouched.
In some cases, many real reasons why a children behaves as a picky eater exist.About 5% of children who are 10 years of age or younger have some type of neurological dysfunction(神经机能障碍)that influences their eating habits. These children may be easily hurt by some special smells,or their brain may not be able to process such sensory information properly.

From ancient times, tigers were the subject of constant attraction for their beauty, size and sometimes mythical stories related to them.People's fascination (迷恋) for tigers is obvious from the fact that tigers are still a part of many national symbols and flags.Tigers are the largest cat species.Unfortunately, the population of tigers is fast decreasing.Every part of tigers from tail to skin to nail is traded in the illegal market for very high values. Many tigers are hunted, which is one of the key threats to their existence. They are also caught and raised as pets.97 percent of the world tiger populations decreased in the last 100 years and only 3,890 tigers are left.If tigers get extinct,we will lose a species. And it also means that enough forests have been destroyed, which may endanger many other species.
For us,tigers are symbols of wildlife's fighting for survival. It reminds us of the dangers we face because of people's over-exploitation (过度开发) of the nature. It's an opportunity as well. Many efforts are on the way to double the tiger population by 2024.Strict national and international laws are against hunting and trading tigers. As a result, the number of tigers in the wild has risen for the first time in more than 100 years.Even though this is just a small increase,it's a huge symbolic victory in our efforts against the destruction of forests and wildlife. It's very important that we all join together in this effort, not only to save tigers, but also to save our forests.

(1)What can we learn about International Tiger Day?
A.It's celebrated on 29 June.
B.It's held once every four years.
C.Lots of money is collected on that day.
D.Some activities are held worldwide for it.
(2)According to Paragraph 2,how do people feel about tigers?
A.Tigers are uncommon.

212705. (2024•铁一中学•高二上期中)     Profits from cutting down rainforests are surprisingly small.A freshly cleared square kilometer of the Amazon rainforest fetches an average price of only around $12.By contrast, the social costs of clearing it are huge. Some 500 tons of carbon dioxide are pumped into the atmosphere.By an estimate, that does$25,000 of harm by accelerating climate change.
Yet still the world's trees are disappearing. The senseless men cutting down trees receive the profits, but all 8 billion people on the planet pay for the costs.Clearly,if the owners of the rainforest were in places with clear landownership and a firm rule of law,the world would no doubt already have funded such a deal.Sadly, they are not.
Local officials are often in league with the loggers, and may be loggers themselves Consider Brazil. It had a leader, who sided with illegal loggers and ranchers(大农场主).He stopped fining forest criminals and told illegal miners on local reserves he would legalise the mining. On his watch the pace of deforestation rose by 60%.Local communities often refuse to follow the law and order since they see more benefit from deforestation than protecting it.And the land ownership is a mess. When it's unclear who owns a piece of land,it's unclear whom to pay to protect it,or whom to fine for destroying it.
Leadership matters. But even under better leaders, people living there should see benefits in protecting them. That will require a big, reliable flow of cash which should come from rich-country governments and from private firms buying carbon credits to make up for their emissions(排放).
Such carbon credits could be used to promote a greener local economy, and clean up local land registration. If there's enough cash, conditionally paid, locals will be encouraged to protect trees and less likely to elect irresponsible leaders. To preserve such a huge carbon sink-never mind the biodiversity it contains-this would be a bargain.

(1)What does the author intend to tell in Paragraph 1?
A.Climate change is accelerating.
B.Rainforest clearing is rather profitable.
C.Carbon dioxide is harmful to the atmosphere.
D.The costs of deforestation outweigh the profits.
(2)What makes the world's trees disappear constantly?
A.Clear landownership.
B.The absence of related law.
C.Profit-driving logging.
D.People's willingness to buy trees.
(3)What is needed to protect the rainforest according to the author?
A.More landownership funds.
B.Bringing in more private firms.
C.Awareness of saving biodiversity.
D.Paying the locals for the preservation efforts.
(4)Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Cash for Saving Rainforests
B.Fight Illegal Logging in Brazil
C.Dilemmas of Rainforest Protection
D.Rainforest Deforestation and Climate Change

201825. (2024•西安中学•九模)     From the world's last seven to a global population of more than 5,000,China spent nearly 40 years bringing back crested ibises(朱鹗)from the edge of extinction.
With its typical red crest and face,as well as a long black mouth and snow-white feathers, the crested ibis is known as "the oriental gem" in China. They were once widespread in East Asia and Siberia until the 20th century when hunting, ecological damage and increased human activities drove the birds to near extinction.
In 1981,the entire species around the world was down to the seven crested ibises which were found only in Yangxian County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, and deep in the Qinling Mountains, making Qinling,a natural boundary between China's north and south, the last shelter of the wild birds.
Since 1981,the local government of Yangxian County has put forward four bans for the protection of the species, prohibiting activities including hunting in the birds' living areas, cutting down trees where they nest, using chemicals in their food-finding areas, and firing guns in their breeding(繁殖)areas. The Chinese government arranged special funds to protect the habitat of crested ibises, sealing off mountains to plant trees in the birds' living areas.China started the artificial breeding of crested ibises in 1991 and had bred more than 400 birds in Shaanxi as of last year.
Years of constant effort have brought promising results. It is estimated that there are more than 5,000 crested ibises in the world now,and a majority of them live in Shaanxi. The bird's habitat in China has risen from less than 5 square km in 1981 to the current 15,000 square km.
"It is lucky that the crested ibis,an ancient bird,is still flying around," said Zan Linsen, head of the Shaanxi Academy of Forestry. "The conservation story of crested ibises not only shows us the power of ancient life, but also the necessity and urgency of ecological environment protection."

(1)Why are the Qinling Mountains so important to crested ibises?
A.They are where crested ibises were first found.
B.They used to be the last habitat of crested ibises.
C.They are the only breeding area of crested ibises.
D.They protect crested ibises from natural enemies.
(2)What can we conclude from paragraph 4?
A.Crested ibises are unlikely to be bred artificially.
B.It's legal to own hunting guns in Yangxian County.
C.Hunting has been the biggest threat to crested ibises.
D.The government plays a key role in saving crested ibises.
(3)How does Zan Linsen feel about the conservation of crested ibises?
A.Merciful and ambitious.
B.Relieved and happy.
C.Shocked and curious.
D.Sorry and regretful.
(4)What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Rare animals in China:crested ibises

203658. (2024•师大附中•高二上期末) Transport is undergoing a massive transformation so it can meet society's demands for a low- carbon economy.Introducing electric vehicles (EV) and declining gasoline use are helping, but zero-carbon hydrogen can speed up both the transition (转变) and long-term decarbonization of transport.
In the US,transportation produces the largest share of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) in the economy at 29%,according to the Environmental Protection Agency.More than 90% of transport fuel is petrol based, but if more vehicles used hydrogen, emissions of this kind would plummet.
However, hydrogen is not considered an ideal replacement for gasoline as an engine fuel for cars because it is harder to store safely. And while fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that turn hydrogen into electricity can compete with EV performance-and even out-compete them on range and refill time, extra energy is needed to produce the hydrogen needed for fuel. Also, finding investment for storage, pipelines and fuel stations is still a challenge for many nations.
Currently, governments worldwide are backing green hydrogen projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in heavy industries like freight (货运),steel, and energy storage. But hydrogen transport will need rapid production methods to create the fuel needed for the world's road fleet.
Thankfully, research is advancing all the time.Nanoscale (纳米级的) thin films are applied to improving the chemical process to rapidly harvest hydrogen from the seawater. The same technology has been successfully used in solar power devices with higher efficiency-to-cost rates.Since hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and as seawater makes up about 96% of all water on Earth, there is a virtually limitless supply.
Even wastewater and solid waste can create green hydrogen.Researchers at Princeton University are using sunlight to separate hydrogen from industrial wastewater.Chemical plants that currently face high costs for cleaning wastewater could transform it into clean hydrogen supplies.

(1)What does the underlined word "plummet" mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Stop.
B.Decrease.
C.Continue.
D.Disappear.
(2)What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Ways of storing hydrogen safely.
B.Benefits of fuel cell electric vehicles.
C.Challenges of using hydrogen as car fuel.
D.Differences between gasoline and hydrogen.
(3)What makes it more efficient to get hydrogen from the ocean?
A.The application of solar power devices.
B.The method of identifying water elements.
C.The invention.of the water transport system.
D.The use of the nanoscale thin-film technology.
(4)Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Clean Energy Hydrogen Ready to Take Off.
B.Traditional Fuels Bound to Reach a Dead End.
C.How We Can Generate Energy from Hydrogen.
D.What the Future of Transportation May Be Like.
