The kids spent time handing out coats to any homeless they met on the streets and tied the rest around lamp posts for o thers to pick up.According to Tara, the experience helped the children better understand the difficu 11 si tuation of homeless people having to confront the severe winter on the s tree ts.

13. (本题0分)        "YEARS ago when I was at the Grand Canyon,I remember someone coming up to the canyon's edge, taking a shot with their camera and then walking away, like 'got it done',barely even glancing at the magnificent scene sprawling(展开) in front of them," Linda Henkel,a scientist at Fairfield University,US told Live Science.
Henkel was surprised by how obsessed people are with taking pictures these days —before dinner, during friends' birthday parties,on museum tours and so on.You know people just like that, don't you?
They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkel's latest study has just found out, this obsession may prevent their brains from remembering what actually happened, reported The Guardian.
In her study,Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and to photograph 15 others. The next day the students' memory of the tour was tested, and the resultowed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them.
"When people rely on technology to remember for them-counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves,it can have a negative effect on how well they remember their experiences," Henkel explained.
But there is also an exception:if students zoomed in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens(镜头)on a specific area could even recall parts that weren't in the frame.
So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn't reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.
"In order to remember,we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just amassing them," Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research haown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they aren't usually very organized on their computers.
28. The author mentioned Henkel's trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning to        .

B.Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.
C.Pictures that focus on the details of objects are likely to improve people's memories.
D.People should spend more time studying real objects than taking pictures of them.

A.Displaying
B.Collecting
C.introducing

14. (本题0分)        After a long and busy day at school or work, all we want to do is return to a clean and comfortable home.Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live. You can now turn your thermostat (恒温器) up,lock your doors and play your music with a simple voice command.
In fact, smart homes have actually been around for some time.Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a communication protocol (协议) called X10 back in 1975.With radio waves, this protocol allowed users to communicate with various devices in their homes, such as lights and alarms, according to AVSystemsMag,a magazine dedicated to the AV and automation industry.
Of course,4 G-and now 5 G-wireless technology makes smart homes much more sophisticated (复杂的) and powerful than X10 devices.Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant.Google Home and Amazon's Alexa allow users to interact with nearly any device in their homes simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for children and people with physical disabilities,as they can accomplish tasks that would normally be too complicated or difficult, according to How To Geek magazine.
Common household appliances can become "smart" as well. For example,a smart trash bin can monitor the things you've thrown away and place an online order for replacement items, while smart refrigerators can create dinner recipes based on the ingredients that were kept inside, according to How stuff works website.5 G-powered sensors and cameras can monitor almost every aspect of household life.
The appeal of all of this convenience has paid off for realtors, who are seeing sales of smart homes skyrocket. You can ask Dave Garland,a realtor with Second Century Ventures.
"There's a new narrative when it comes to what 'home' means," he said in an NPR report. "It means a personalized environment where technology responds to your every need."
But it's not just about convenience.Smart homes are also good for the environment.By monitoring your energy use and automatically turning off lights and other devices that you are not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall.Using less energy means that we use fewer resources such as coal and gas, which is ultimately good for the environment-and our wallets.Well, not everyone is excited about smart home.

29. (本题0分)     Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian,Mr.Egan,is the school sponsor (主办者) for it.Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning,set-up,and selling at the fair.I am sure that Mr.Egan consulted our teacher,Ms.Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge.I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie Lyons.
Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close.Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other.Needless to say,the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event,I waocked that Mr.Egan and Ms.Cates found us a suitable match.
At the meeting with Mr.Egan,we divided the responsibilities between us.I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days.Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan,I knew I could not waste time.I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair.I figured that, between Mr.Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me,we would be just fine.
Meanwhile,I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, "Everything's cool."
On the day of the set-up,my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books.I asked him, "Charlie, what's wrong?"
