218594. (2022•关山中学•高一上三月) Afternoon tea became popular about 150 years ago, when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for a cup of afternoon tea.Usually taken in the late afternoon,it is also called "low tea" as it is served at a low table.Since this isn't a meal, but rather like a late afternoon snack, finger foods such as sandwiches, scones and pastries are common.People are taking tea not only to get what their bodies need or satisfy hunger, but to take time to relax, chat and enjoy the company of dear friends. In England, the traditional time for tea is four or five o'clock in the afternoon and no one stays after seven o'clock.
This very British tradition is said to have been started in the 1840s by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford,England.During the long time between an early lunch and a very late dinner, she experienced what she called "a sinking feeling" at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. So she asked her serving girl to bring her a pot of tea,a little bread and butter and cake in her room. She found this arrangement(安排) so pleasing that she began asking her friends to join her.
High tea,a term often mixed with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. In the past the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had meals at about noon and after work between five and seven o'clock. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea.It was called "high tea" because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table.
How much do people enjoy the afternoon tea moment? As a famous writer named Henry James said, "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated(把……专用于) to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

(1)How does the term "low tea" come about?

212963. (2023•铁一中学•高二上期中)     When people visit their local family-owned pumpkin patch (菜地) around Halloween, they aren't usually looking for dinner. For people who prefer seasonal recipes to decorations, that may raise a few questions:Are the pumpkins sold for jack-o'-lanterns (南瓜灯) different from pumpkins sold as food? And are Halloween pumpkins any good to eat?
The pumpkins available at farms and outside supermarkets during October are what most people know, but that's just one type of pumpkin.Howden pumpkins are the most common decorative pumpkin variety. They've been bred (培育) specifically for carving into jack-o'-lanterns,with a symmetrical (对称的) round shape, deep orange color, and sturdy (结实的) stem that acts as a handle. They have walls that are thin enough to poke (刺) a cheap knife through and a texture (质地) that's unappealing compared to the squashes consumers are used to eating. "Uncut carving pumpkins are safe to eat;however,it's not the best type to use for cooking," Daria McKelvey,a supervisor for the Kemper Center for Home Gardening at the Missouri Botanical Garden, tells Mental Floss.
If you do want to get some culinary (食物的) use out of your carving pumpkins this Halloween, set aside the seeds.Roasted with seasonings (作料) and olive oil, seeds from different pumpkin varieties become a tasty and nutritious snack.Another option is to turn the flesh of your Halloween pumpkin into purée (酱,糊,泥).Adding sugar and spices and baking it into a dessert can do a lot to mask the fruit's flavor.
Whatever you do,make sure your pumpkin isn't carved up already when you decide to cook with it.There are many ways to recycle your jack-o'-lanterns,but turning them into pie isn't one of them. "If one does plan on cooking with a carving pumpkin,it should be undamaged, " McKelvey says. "Never use one that's been carved into a jack-o'-lantern."

A.It has a round shape,deep knife.
B.It is the most common kind of decorative pumpkin.
C.It acts as a handle.
D.It is bred specifically for carving into jack-o'-lanterns and you can never eat it.
(3)If you do want to get snack out of your carving pumpkins, what would do?
A.Roasted the seeds with seasonings(作料) and olive oil.
B.Poke a cheap knife through your carving pumpkins.
C.Mask the fruit's flavor.
D.turn the flesh of your Halloween pumpkin into sugar and spices.
(4)All the statements are correct EXCEPT according to the last paragraph?
A.There are many ways to deal with your jack-o'-lanterns.
B.Turning your jack-o'-lanterns into pie is the only way to recycle them.
C.If one wants to cook with a carving pumpkin,it should be carved.

217860. (2024•铁一中学•高一上一月)     "Merry Christmas from the Family",a country song by Robert Earl Keen, tells the tale of a festive get-together.Many listeners will recognize the chaos(混乱) the singer describes;even more than that, they will definitely identify with his struggle to recall how he is related to the various guests. "Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen," Mr.Keen sings, "Can't remember how I'm kin (有亲属关系的) to them."
That may have something to do with the English language. It is often joked that anyone around your age is a "cousin" and anyone older is an "uncle" or "aunt".English is rather bare in its terms for family members.Other languages pay far more attention to the details.
Take "brother" and "sister" for instance.Societies that value age-order highly often have different terms for older brother, older sister, younger brother and younger sister. These are ge,jie,di and mei in Chinese or ani, ane, ototo, imoto in Japanese.
Chinese even requires the speakers to remember whether a relative is older or younger than they are, whether relatives of their parents are older or younger than they, and so on.There are many armchair theories about the relationship between language and culture that do not hold up to careful examination. The East Asian languages' focus on seniority(年长),however,is actually related to the importance Confucianism places on the virtue of respecting your elders.
Actually, all languages permit you to describe relationships in any amount of de tail your listener would like. The focus that some cultures put on labelling every possible relation with a distinct term does not mean that those who lack those terms do not pay attention to family networks.Every English-speaking family seems to have at least one member who can sort out the complicated relations and tell you that Henry Ford was a great-great-great uncle. But each family also has members who couldn't care less, waving a hand and saying "uncle" or "cousin".

(1)How does the author introduce the topic of the text?        ?
A.By criticizing a forgetful guest.
B.By praising a recognized singer.
C.By illustrating a shared experience.
D.By presenting a chaotic get-together.
(2)Why does the author mention the examples of Chinese and Japanese?        ?
A.To indicate their respect for the elders.
B.To make a contrast with English language.
C.To emphasize the influence of Confucianism.
D.To make an analysis of East Asian languages.
(3)What does "armchair theories" in paragraph 4 probably mean?        ?
A.Baseless assumptions.
B.Detailed descriptions.
C.Contradictory thoughts.
D.Convincing explanations.
(4)What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?        ?
A.Labelling every relation is no easy.?
B.English speakers value family networks as well.
C.Some people enjoy sorting out complicated relations.
D.General terms for relatives indicate weaker family bond.

218375. (2022•长安区一中•高三上一月) From linguists' point of view, grammar is a set of patterns for how words are put together to form phrases or clauses, whether in spoken or written.Different languages have different patterns. Some scholars have tried to identify patterns common to all languages. But apart from some basic features, few of these socalled linguistic universals have been found.
The study of these patterns opens up "an ongoing debate" between two positions, known as prescriptivism and descriptivism.Prescriptivism thinks a given language should follow consistent rules, while descriptivism sees variation and adaptation as a natural and necessary part of language.
Language purists(纯化论者) worked to establish and promote this standard by detailing a set of rules that reflected the established grammar of their times. And rules for written grammar were applied to spoken language as well.Speech patterns that deviated from the written rules were considered signs of low social status. And many people who are grownups speaking in these ways were forced to adopt the standardized form.
More recently, however, linguists have understood that speech is a separate phenomenon from writing with its own regularities and patterns. We form our spoken skills through unconscious habits, not memorized rules. And because speech also uses mood and intonation for meaning, its structure is often more flexible, adapting to the needs of speakers and listeners. This could mean avoiding complex clauses that are hard to understand in real time, making changes to avoid awkward pronunciation or removing sounds to make speech faster.
But while the debate between prescriptivism and descriptivism continues, the two are not mutually exclusive.Like language itself,it's a wonderful and complex fabric woven through the contributions of speakers and listeners, writers and readers, prescriptivists and descriptivists from both near and far.

213135. (2024•鄠邑四中•高一下期中)  FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS Economic development is necessary if we want to improve society. There comes a time when the old must give way to the new,and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past as we move towards the future.Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.
Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s,the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests.Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt's cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam,the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.
A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community.Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made a proposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally,a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.
The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world.Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961,German engineers moved the first temple.Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and countless cultural relics.Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.
When the project ended in 1980,it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow.
The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today.Perhaps the best example iown by UNESCO,which runs a programme that prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution.

D.Because they could get help from the global community.
(3)How were the temples and other cultural sites saved?
A.They were rebuilt in other higher places.
B.They were moved to places with no water.
C.They were preserved in museums.

202804. (2020•西安中学•三模) By the 1970s,the Olympic Marathon had come a long way from the dusty roads of Athens.Yet women were still not allowed to compete and the struggle to establish a women's Olympic Marathon was itself something of a long-distance race.
Women had been excluded from long-distance running until 1928,when the typical long race was the 800 meters. The women competitors hadn't properly prepared for the race and several fell down and became temporarily unconscious due to extreme tiredness. This led Olympic organizers in 1928 to consider the marathon too violent for women.
This is not to say there was no tradition of women's long-distance running.Women had been prohibited from participating in the ancient Olympics by the cruel law.But women in ancient Greece held their own festival to honor the goddess Hera every five years.Only one athletic event was held - a running race.
When the Olympics were revived in 1896,women were again excluded. However,in 1967,women's ability in running attracted great attention.Number 261 in the Boston Marathon was given to K V.Switzer.Not until two miles into the race did officials realize that Switzer was a woman.Race officials tried to catch Switzer and remove her from the race but her teammates fended them off with body blocks. And Switzer wasn't scared by officials' aggressive actions. She kept running.Although the running was demanding,Switzer didn't give up and eventually finished the race.Switzers story made the quest for equality in long-distance running for women a political issue.Slowly, the rules did begin to change.
The first women's marathon officially agreed by the IAAF was the Tokyo International, held in 1979.IAAF president Adriaan Paulen watched the race.He was so impressed by the level of the competition that he announced he would fully support the effort to establish a women's marathon in the Olympics.Soon the IAAF recommended to the IOC that a women's marathon be included in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. And the advice was adopted.

218901. (2021•西安中学•高三上一月) Stonehenge(巨石阵)may have been a prehistoric health center rather than a site for observing stars or a temple in honor of the dead, scientists said yesterday.New evidence unearthed at the World Heritage Site in more than 40 years suggests that the monument was a place where the diseased and injured went in groups, seeking cures.
After a two-week dig, scientists have concluded that Stonehenge was "the ancient healthcare centre of southern England" because of the existence of "bluestones" —the smaller columns of dolerite(辉绿岩)that formed an earlier stone structure.
By dating pieces of remains to around 7330 BC,Tim Darvill,of Bournemouth University, and Goff Wainwright,of the Society of Amtiquaries have found that hunter-gatherers were at the site on Salisbury Plain 4,000 years earlier than thought. The first stage of Stonehenge,a round earthwork structure, was built around 3000 BC.Professor Wainwright added:"I did not expect the degree of complexity we discovered. We're able to say so much more about when Stonehenge was built and why —all of which changes our previous understanding of the monument."
The research reveals the importance of the henge's famous bluestones.Hundreds of bluestone chips gathered at the site have led the team to conclude that the bluestones were valued for their curing effects— the key reason why about 80 of them, each weighing up to 4 tons and a half, were dragged more than 150 miles from the Preseli Hills to Wiltshire. After years of research,Professors Darvill and Wainwright have concluded that, for thousands of years the Preseli mountain range was home to magical health centers and holy wells.
Even today there are those who believe in the curing powers of the springs for coughs and heart disease, and people who use crystals and bluestones for self-curing.Radiocarbon tests have also revealed that the construction of the original bluestone circle took place around 2300 BC,three centuries later than originally thought.Interestingly,on the same day died the "Amesbury Archer" — a sick traveler from the Swiss or German Alps who had an infected knee — whose remains were discovered about five miles from Stonehenge. The professors believe that he was a devoted religious person who was hoping to benefit from the curing powers of the monument.

219859. (2019•西安中学•高一上二月) Although its history can be somewhat traced back to ancient Korea,it is a true fact that Taekwondo as an organized art is relatively modern. In fact, the only recorded history begins in the mid 1900's.
The actual beginnings of Taekwondo are not known to everyone, yet many historians believe it came from a Korean martial art from practiced over 1,300 years ago.
In the early 1900's the art developed with the instruction of Chinese and Japanese techniques. Some Koreans were anxious because these influences did not prove the amazing kicking power of the art nor its traditional values or philosophy.
The actual name of Taekwondo wasn't official until 1955.At that time Korean General Hong Hi Choi organized a movement to combine Korea's various martial arts styles. He recommended the name "Taekwondo" to an organization specially founded to select a name for the new art.On April 11,1955,Taekwondo was recognized as the name for the newly combined, officially recognized Korean martial art.
As an interesting side note, the word Taekwondo itself is made up of three Chinese/Korean words:Tae,meaning to kick or jump;Kwon, meaning fist or hand;and Do,which means "the way".It can be thought of as "The Way of the Hand and Foot".
In the 1960's Taekwondo began to spread internationally and developed throughout the late 1900's.It became a fighting sport, although self?defense, fitness, and the philosophy of the practice are still main elements of Taekwondo.

205695. (2018•西安中学•高二下期末) Summer heat can be dangerous, and heat leads to tragedy far too often.According to kidsandcars.org,an average of 37 young children per year die of car heat in the US,when they are accidentally left in a hot vehicle.
For Bishop Curry,a fifth grader from McKinney,Texas, one such incident hit close to home.A six-month-old baby from his neighborhood died after hours in a hot car. After hearing about her death,Curry decided that something needed to be done.Young Curry, who turned 11 this year, has always had a knack for inventing things, and he drew up a sketch(草图) of a device he called "Oasis."
The device would attach to car seats and watch the temperature inside the car.If it reached a certain temperature in the car,and the device sensed a child in the car seat,it would begin to circulate cool air.Curry also designs the device using GPS and Wi-Fi technology, which would alarm the child's parents and,if there was no response from them, the police.
Curry's father believes that the invention has potential. "The cool thing about Bishop's thinking is none of this technology is new," he said. "We feel like the way he's thinking and combining all these technologies will get to production faster." His father even introduced the device to Toyota, where he works as an engineer. The company was so impressed that they sent Curry and his father to a car safety conference in Michigan.
In January,Curry's father launched a campaign for the invention. They hope to raise money to finalize the patent, build models, and find a manufacturer.Their goal was$20,000,but so many people believed in Oasis' potential that they have raised more than twice that--over$46,000.
Curry's father remembers the first time he saw his son's sketch. "I was so proud of him for thinking of a solution," he said. "We always just complain about things and rarely offer solutions."

(1)What inspired Curry to invent Oasis?
A.His narrow escape from death after being locked in a car.
B.His knowledge of many children's death because of car heat.
C.The death of his neighbor's baby after being left in a hot car.
D.The injury of 37 children in his school in a car accident.
(2)What would Oasis do if it was hot in a car with a child?
A.It would inform the parents or even the police.
B.It would pump out the hot air in the car.
C.It would sound the alarm attached to the car.
D.It would get the window open to save the child.
(3)What does Curry's father think is cool about Curry's invention?
A.It used some of the most advanced technology.
B.It simply combined technologies that existed.
C.It could accelerate production of new technology.
D.It is the most advanced among similar products.
(4)Why did Curry's father start a campaign to raise money?

220550. (2016•七十中•高二下二月) Plant cloning has been an agricultural technique used by farmers and gardeners for centuries.Grafting (嫁接) is a common form of plant cloning. Many plants in nature actually clone themselves and reproduce asexually.
Cloned plants are much more predictable than normal plants,so their yield (产量) is more reliable.Cloned plants also reproduce faster, limiting the amount of time between planting and harvesting. It is also often cheaper to produce seeds through cloning than through traditional methods.Plants can essentially be optimized so that farmers or individual growers always have the best seeds available. With more yield at a faster rate, farms can produce more food for more people while decreasing overall costs.
Cloning can be used to wipe out diseases that previously killed off entire fields of crops. This would make plants immune (免疫的) to the kinds of diseases that farmers and gardeners around the world fear each year.Crop failures due to disease and virus could become a thing of the past. Also, plants that are near extinction can be brought back to life through cloning.
Through cloning scientists can develop"super"fruits and vegetables of superior nutritional quality. This could make for a healthier population overall. This is already being done through selective pollination (授粉),and genetic cloning could take it to the next level.
By plant cloning we have a population of identical plants and all these plants equally suffer from the same diseases, but in nature the weak would die and the strong would survive. While there are some dangers to consider with plant cloning, there are plenty of benefits that could prove vital to the propagation (繁衍) of the human species.
(1)The underlined word"optimized"in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by"        ".
A.enlarged
B.produced
C.perfected
D.examined
(2)According to the text,cloned plants
A.have lower yield than normal plants
B.need little care from people
C.resist various kinds of diseases
D.have a short growth cycle
(3)What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To warn the negative effects of plant cloning.
B.To present different kinds of plant cloning.
C.To predict the future of plant cloning.
D.To inform us about the advantages of plant cloning.
