217990. (2023•西安中学•高二上二月)     When you think of Chinese food in the US,fried rice,or General Tso's chicken may first come to your mind. But a new museum exhibition in New York City is trying to expand visitors' palates (味蕾).It features stories of famous cooks like Martin Yan and home cooks whose food represents 18 different regional cooking styles of China.
"I think it's unfair to just classify Chinese cooking as one," says Kian Lam Kho,an organizer of "Sour,Sweet,Bitter,Spicy:Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America" at the Museum of Chinese in America. "Even with the same dish or same cuisine, every family has a different variation." That's why the organizers say if you want to taste the full range of Chinese cuisine in the US,you'll need to go beyond restaurants and into home kitchens, which can play a central role in many immigrants' lives.
"The kitchen itself is kind of a comfort when you come to a new country. That's the one place where you set up as your home base, and you cook things that you remember from your past," explains Audra Ang,another organizer.
One of the home cookowcased in the exhibition is Ni Biying,80,of Manhattan. She worked as a live-in babysitter for years before she could finally afford to rent a home with her own kitchen. These days, you can usually find her moving around her one-bedroom apartment as a sweet smell of vinegar and rice wine floats from her stove. For Ni,a small dinner for friends and family means preparing almost a dozen different dishes. She learned some of her techniques from her father, who made most of her family's meals when she was a child. "I still miss the beef with stir-fried celery my father used to cook," she says. And it's the kind of comfort food that defines Chinese food for Ni.

203571. (2025•临潼区•高一上期末)     When I was ten years old,I went to the US to visit some family friends. We travelled all the way from California to Las Vegas.I noticed something funny about the way everyone spoke English.I was thinking,"This is the way they speak in films!"
At the beginning of the holiday, one of my friends asked me if I wanted to order "French fries."I couldn't imagine what French fries were. What was fried and French?!Snails?Cheese?
She was amazed that I had never tried them and she ordered a portion for us to share. When the waiter brought us some chips,I asked her where the French fries were. She pointed to the plate of chips!Later that week she said she was going to buy some"chips"from the supermarket. She came out with a packet of crisps!
During that holiday we were also offered"biscuits and gravy"with our lunch. This was a very strange idea to me,because in England biscuits are sweet.Gravy is a salty,meat-based sauce.I later realized that "biscuits" in America are savoury snacks. What we call"biscuits,"they call"cookies."
One day,I saw an"eggplant"pizza on the menu in a restaurant!Eggs do not grow on plants,I thought. What on earth could an"eggplant"be?Something eggy and leafy? My dad ordered this pizza and it was covered in aubergines.I asked him where the"eggplant"was. He laughed and pointed to the aubergines. He told me,"They call this 'eggplant' in America!"
Although the same "language" may be spoken in different countries, there are likely to be many differences, not just in vocabulary but also in spelling, grammar and pronunciation!I think part of the excitement of learning a language is discovering the differences in how it is spoken in different places.

204355. (2023•铁一中学•高一上期末)      People often talk about cultural differences between western and eastern countries, but how about the western world itself?Surprisingly,a closer look at it can reveal a good many curious details.
The most obvious characteristic of the majority of Americans is that they smile a lot.It does not matter whether they have a strong reason to smile sometimes simply because they have to.Europeans,on the contrary, smile mostly when they are in a good mood,or feel amused;if not,a European's face will remain neutral or even dull.It does not mean that Europeans are serious,or that they do not have a sense of humour.
The same refers to communication in general.Americans are extremely communicative;small talks and chats are common.Europeans talk mostly when there is something to say,and rarely enter communication just for the purpose of talking to other people.American people prefer to express what they think carefully, considering how it might affect surrounding people.Europeans are more straightforward, even with unfamiliar people.A European friend will almost always voice his opinion on different occasions, and will not hesitate to remind you that you need to lose some weight or take a shower.
It can be said that Americans are people of contrasts. They are open-minded,flexible,and ready to accept everything new enthusiastically;but at the same time,American society manages to bring up unbelievable conservatives.Americans are extremely politically correct which,in most cases,is indeed a secure and beneficial practice, but it can also mess up daily or even private communication, sometimes preventing having close relationships.Europeans,on the contrary, are more straightforward, preferring to tell the truth in direct ways. Each way of communication is different-neither is correct or incorrect.

(1)What does the author say about smiling?
A.It is culture-related within western countries.
B.It is a powerful marketing tool across cultures.
C.It is thought of as a sign of a fool in America.
D.It is regarded as a social necessity in Europe.
(2)What is typical of Europeans' communication?
A.Beating around the bush.
B.Having small talks and chats.
C.Hiding their feelings carefully.
D.Expressing themselves openly.
(3)What does the underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Being straightforward.
B.Being politically correct.
C.Accepting everything new.
D.Raising unbelievable conservatives.
(4)How is the text mainly developed?
A.By analysing cause and effect.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By classifying body language.
D.By discussing research findings.

203406. (2016•西工大附中•七模) Andy Steele lives just a few blocks from the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish,S.D.,so commuting(经常往返) to class isn't the problem. But he doesn't like lectures much, isn't a morning person, and wants time during the day to restore motorcycles.
So Steele,a full-time senior business major, has been taking as many classes as he can from the South Dakota State system's online offerings. He gets better grades and learns more,he says, and insists he isn't missing out on the college experience.
"I still know a lot of people from my first two years living on campus, and I still meet a lot of people," he says. But now,he sets his own schedule.
At least 2.3 million people took some kind of online courses, according to a recent survey by the Sloan Consortium,an online education group, and two-thirds of colleges offering "face-to-face" courses also offer online ones. But what were once two different types of classes are looking more and more alike and often falling into the same pool of students.
At some schools, online courses originally intended for non-traditional students living far from campus have proved surprisingly popular with on-campus students.A recent study found 42 percent of the students enrolled in its distance education courses were located on campus at the university that was hosting the online courses.
Numbers vary depending on the policies of particular colleges, but other schools also have students mixing and matching online and "face-to-face" credits.Motives range from lifestyle to adapting to a job schedule to getting into high-demand courses.
Washington State had about 325 on-campus undergraduates taking one or more distance courses last year.As many as 9,000 students took both distance and in-person classes at Arizona State last year.
"Business is really about providing choices to their customers, and that's really what we want to do," said Sheila Aaker, extended services coordinator (协调人) at Black Hills State.
Many schools, such as Washington State and Arizona State, let departments and academic units decide who can take an online course. They say students with legitimate academic needs - a conflict with another class,a course they need to graduate that is full - often get permission, though they still must take some key classes in person.

(1)What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce Steele to us,who prefers online courses.
B.To tell us about the development of campus courses.
C.To show the differences between campus courses and online courses.
D.To show more on-campus students are taking online courses.
(2)We can learn from the passage that Andy Steele
A.lives far from the campus
B.knows none of his classmates
C.wants to have his own lifestyle
D.doesn't get good marks
(3)Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The undergraduates attend the online courses for different purposes.
B.It is expected that distance education is popular with on-campus students.
C.About 325 on-campus undergraduates took online courses in Washington last year.
D.Different colleges have different policies about online courses.
(4)From what Sheila Aaker said in the passage,we can tell
A.business is the most popular major in universities
B.collegeould provide more majors for students
C.where the similarity between business and colleges lies
D.why colleges offer online courses to on-campus students

203408. (2016•西工大附中•七模) The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby.Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother.During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so,however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on "mother"- the real mother or the mother-substitute.
During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows,a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes - one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire.If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However,if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites.Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.
Why is cloth preferable to bare wire?Something that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is.Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers' skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can.Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed,or annoyed,it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body.Wire doesn't "rub" as well as does soft cloth.Prolonged (长时间的) "contact comfort" with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby's love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be.It screams in terror and curls up into a furry little ball.If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort,it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well.Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding onto its "mother."

(1)Psychologically,what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?
A.Warmth

(3)It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure,
A.it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys
B.it spends more time screaming to get rewards
C.it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting

203439. (2015•师大附中•一模) Our body clock,or natural body rhythm, influences our energy and alertness(警觉).paying attention to it can help us choose the suitable time of day when we best perform specific tasks.
The reality, however,is that most of us organize their time around work demands, school deadlines, commuting or social events.Doing whatever your body feels like doing is a luxury in today's fast-paced modern society.
But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying.Obeying our body clock has significant health benefits.Disrupting our natural body rhythm,on the other hand, has been linked to problems such as depression, obesity,or headache, says Steve Key,a biology professor.
When the body clock can synchronize(使……同步)the rhythms of its natural processes,it "gives us an advantage in daily life",says Key.
According to him, when it comes to cognitive (认知的) work, most adults perform best in the late morning. As our body temperature starts to rise just before awakening in the morning and continues to increase until midday, our memory, alertness and concentration gradually improve.
However,he adds, our ability to concentrate typically starts to decrease soon thereafter. Most of us are more easily distracted (分心) between noon and 4pm.
Alertness also tends to fall after eating a meal and sleepiness tends to peak around 2pm,making that a good time for a nap.
Surprisingly, tiredness may increase our creative powers. For most adults, problems that require open ended thinking are often best dealt with in the evening when they are tired, according to a study in the journal Thinking & Reasoning.
When choosing a time of day to exercise, paying attention to your body clock can improve results.Physical performance is usually best from about 3 to 6 pm,says Michael Smolensky,a professor of biomedical engineering.
Of course, not everyone's body clock is the same, making it even harder to synchronize natural rhythms with daily plans.

(1)If we know our natural body rhythm well,we can.
A.organize our time around work demands
B.find out the suitable time to do specific tasks
C.do whatever our body feels like doing
D.be sure to be healthy
(2)Inspiration to solve a difficult problem will most probably come to us
A.when we get up in the morning
B.when we are full of energy in the late morning
C.when we are tired in the evening
D.when we are asleep at night
(3)The main purpose of the passage is to
A.criticize
B.persuade
C.encourage
D.inform
(4)Which of the following can be the suitable title for the passage?

203477. (2015•师大附中•四模) Scientists recently discovered that pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags are the oldest known in Great Britain. But they didn't find out in the usual way.
Archaeologists often date cave art with a process called radiocarbon dating. The technique can measure the age of carbon found in charcoal(木炭)drawings or painted pictures.Carbon is an element found in many things, including charcoal and even people. But in this case, there was no paint or charcoal to test.People carved the pictures of animals and figures into the rock using stone tools. The scientists had an "aha!" moment when they noticed small rocks stuck to the top of the drawings. The small rocks must have formed after the drawings were made.
"It is rare to be able to scientifically date rock art," said Alistair Pike,an archaeological scientist at Britain's University of Bristol. "We were very fortunate that some of the engravings were covered by stalagmites(石笋).
When a test proved that the stalagmites formed 12,800 years ago,the scientists knew the art underneath them had to be at least that old.And some of the animalown, like the European bison, are now extinct--another tip-off that the art is quite old.
The artists came to Creswell Crags,This place is one of the farthest points north reached by our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age.At that time, much of the North Sea was dry,so people could move about more easily.
Some tools and bones found there are 13,000 to 15,000 years old. They show that the travelers hunted horses, reindeer, and arctic hare.Their artwork is similar to art in France and Germany. It tells scientists that the Creswell Crags artists must have had a close connection to peoples several thousand kilometers away-another important clue to understanding how humans spread out across the world.

(1)Which of the following can be used as the best title of the passage?
A.Cave Art About Animals Is Most Beautiful
B.Cave Art Found in an Unusual Way
C.Cave Art Turns Out to Be Britain's Oldest

B.radiocarbon dating appeared only in Britain
C.archaeologists are good at using stone tools
D.drawings and painted pictures are really necessary for the formation of small rocks.
(3)Why do scientists say the art is quite old?
A.The art was carved into stone with stone tools.
B.The animals carved in the stone are beautiful.
C.The cave is one of the farthest points in the world.
D.Some pictures were covered by stalagmites more than 10,000 years old.

203478. (2015•师大附中•四模) In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad;that it sets one person against another;that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self - worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life - and - death affairs. In their single - minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self - respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

(1)What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Competition helps to set up self - respect.
B.Opinions about competition are different among people.
C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
(2)Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A.It pushes society forward.
B.It builds up a sense of duty.
C.It improves personal abilities.
D.It encourages individual efforts.
(3)The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means
A.those who try their best to win
B.those who value competition most highly
C.those who are against competition most strongly
D.those who rely on others most for success
(4)Which point of view may the author agree to
A.Every effort should be paid back.
B.Competition should be encouraged.
C.Winning should be a life - and - death matter.
D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

203516. (2015•西工大附中•八模) Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work, you may say that you're"hot".That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语)as"Get up,John! You'll be late for work again!"The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening.Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better.Habit can help.Dr.Kleitman believes.Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway.Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to.If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up energy and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy.Get up with a yawn and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

205668. (2018•西安中学•高一上期末) After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park.Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development.By the 1920s,wolves had disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results.Deer and elk populations - major food sources (来源) for the wolf - grew rapidly. These animals consumed (消耗) large amounts of vegetation (植被),which reduced plant diversity (多样性) in the park.In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park's red foxes, and completely drove away the park's beavers.
As early as 1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone.Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone.Elk,deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

205640. (2018•西安中学•高一下期末) Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn't it?But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China's high-speed railway system. And that's not all.China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia.Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow China's high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距),maintenance of railway tracks. But the key issue is really money.China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment.Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. It'll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on,not to mention the better communication among those countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China's far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all.And they'll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.

(1)According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is
A.technical issues
B.safety of the system
C.financial problems
D.maintenance of railway tracks
(2)China's new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because
A.China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions.
B.China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways.
C.China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries.
D.The foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism.
(3)Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's high-speed railway plan?
A.Critical.
B.Reserved.
C.Doubtful.
D.Positive.
(4)Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.New Railway Standards
B.Big Railway Dreams
C.High-speed Bullet Trains
D.International Railway Network

218880. (2022•西安八十三中•高一上二月) I love training with my husband Chris. We do our own exercises separately, but then we really enjoy spending 30-40 minutes doing something we both like together.I also train with my family - my brother, his wife and our cousins will come to our house every now and then to train together. It's like family fun time!A little bit of competition also makes us work out harder.

203359. (2016•西工大附中•八模) So hungry do some plants get that they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What's more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they're found on every continent except Antarctica.
You've probably seen a Venus' flytrap. It's often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets.A small plant,it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (茎) are specially modified leaves that act like traps.Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger (触发) hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shuts.Over the course of a week or so,the plant feeds on its catch.
The Venus' flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice,the editor of the International Carnivorous(食肉的)Plant Society's Newsletter.Note:Despite any science-fiction stories you might have read,no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.
Dr.Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating,only if it does all four of the following:"attract, kill, digest, and absorb"some form of insects, including flies, butterflies, and moths.Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants---well,most of the time.
All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis (光合作用).Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes"meat-eating"plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason:nitrogen (氮).Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can't obtain any other way. While almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil,"meat-eating"plants can't.They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they've come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact,nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to"meat-eating"plants.Never fertilize them! But don't worry, either,if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they'll grow very slowly.

A.carnivorous plants are dangerous
B.carnivorous plants are harmless to humans

205622. (2019•蓝田县•高二下期末) Dolphins are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this, they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals.Their brain is nearly the same size as our own,and they live a long time-at least twenty or thirty years.Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food.We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
