217935. (2023•师大附中•高一上二月) There is a well-known saying that was originally popularized by a 1980s cartoon series called G.I.Joe:A Real American Hero. That saying is "Knowing is half the battle." At the end of every G.I.Joe episode, there would be a public service announcement, which gave safety tips and other important life lessons to kids. After that,a child would say "Now I know! " And an adult would end with, "And knowing is half the battle."
If knowing is half the battle, then the other half must be doing. "Recent work in cognitive(认知的)science has demonstrated that knowing is a shockingly tiny part of the battle for most real-world decisions," cognitive psychologists Laurie Santos and Tamar Gendler wrote to Edge.org.In other words, knowing something is likely not enough to overcome our brain's "built-in" reactions. It just simply isn't enough to result in behavioral change.Even if knowing isn't exactly half the battle,it is still important to "know".If you know about something, then it makes you more aware of it.This,in turn,is the first step to making a change.
If you find yourself struggling to make some sort of change in your life, there are some steps you can take to help you turn your "knowing" into "doing".First, whether you want to improve your study habits, eat more healthily,or get more sleep, you should write your goals down. When you write down your goals, you document them on paper, which makes them clearer and easier to follow.Next, break down your goals so that they are easier to manage.Making bite-sized steps to achieve your goals will help motivate you to keep moving forward and complete more of these mini goals. Finally, find someone you can share your progress with.Having a friend, family member,or even an online app can help to keep you in check to make sure you get all of the support you need.
It seems that "knowing is half the battle" is no more. So,put your energy into doing. There is no better time than the present,of course!

204241. (2023•长安区一中•高二上期末) As Valentine's Day approaches, many people with dogs will not care one bit whether they get a card.A survey by the Kennel Club has found almost one in five said they were so attached to their pet because 'dogs don't let you down' in the same way that other people might.
Hollywood legend Glenn Close took her Havanese dog Pip to the Oscars last year, describing her pet as 'the best date a girl can have'.Comedian Miranda Hart and racing driver Lewis Hamilton have gone on holiday with their dogs, and actor Ryan Gosling has taken his cross-breed George, who he describes as 'the great love of my life',to chat shows for moral support.
This could be due to the numerous benefits that come with dog ownership—from the psychological to the physical.Dogs help their owners unwind, whether that's with a daily walk in fresh air,or with a cuddle(依偎) on a sofa. They can also be great listeners, help their owners release stress, and can play a part in improving their health and fitness.
Nevertheless, for those dog owners who are still looking for love, the research suggests their pet might help.More than a fifth of those questioned said they had been asked out on a date with their dog appearing best for attracting a potential partner.Among those responding to the survey,21 percent said they were more likely to date someone who also had a dog.
Mr.Lambert said,"This is quite unsurprising when you consider that dogs are a great ice-breaker,when strangers may otherwise not look twice at each other, and that we tend to have more associations about people who love dogs."
People who owned a pet dog were also very likely to say their pet may have helped them out romantically.

(1)What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Summarizing the previous paragraph.
B.Providing some advice for the pet owners.
C.Introducing some celebrities to the readers.
D.Giving some examples to support the view above.
(2)What does the underlined word "unwind" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Focus.
B.Relax.
C.Recover.
D.Participate.
(3)Why is dating out with a pet dog more appealing?
A.It comforts the strangers.
B.It is the best friend of mankind.
C.It is a bridge between the parties.
D.It makes the conversation romantic.
(4)What is the author's attitude to the company of a pet dog?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Reserved.
D.Disapproving.

205254. (2021•阎良区•高一下期末) Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968.In 1993,she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems,The Wild Iris. And on Oct 8,she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.
Gluck was honored for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with simple beauty, makes individual existence universal.Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, "Gluck is not to be regarded as a confessional(忏悔)poet. She seeks the universal," Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.
Gluck,77,the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss and isolation (孤独).Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be "dark".However, there is much more than darkness in her voice,as noted by Olsson. "It is direct and ...also a voice full of humor," she said.
For example,in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end.At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the "cool wind of the new world" as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.
Although she's already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing(愈合),Gluck did feel honored to be given the famed Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her,the lyric poet responded by saying, "It's too new...I don't know really what it means." 219516. (2020•西安中学•高三上四月) A Fluent Advantage When schools go through budget cuts, foreign language classes are often placed on the cutting block.School administrators often do not understand how important foreign language study is for their students' success in the real world.Far from cutting language classes, schoolould be demanding them for all students.Studying a foreign language should be required in middle schools.
Language study strengthens students' minds. Many studies have indicated that multilingual people-people who speak more than one language-are better at certain tasks.Specifically, multilingual people have better executive function than people who speak only one language.Executive function is the way the brain manages all the information it's given, such as performing different tasks and deciding what to focus on.In brain scans, multilingual people show increased activity in the areas of the brain that control executive function.Researchers have guessed that this advantage exists because multilingual people must constantly decide which words from which language to use.As a result, multilingual people get lots of practice with executive function.Their brains can then apply those skills to other tasks, like paying attention or multitasking. This effect is especially strong for people who grow up speaking more than one language. The earlier students start language classes, the more benefits they may get from language study.
Moreover, language study helps prepare students for their future careers.Today, language skills are in high demand on the job market and more and more businesses work in many countries across the world. As businesses become global, they need people who can communicate easily across national borders. To prepare for their careers, more studentould be learning foreign languages. From 2010 to 2015,the demand in the United States for workers who speak a second language doubled. This trend included workers of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Of course,in order to make better use of the advantages of foreign language study, middle school foreign language classeould not just make students memorize new words and sounds.
They must also teach students about new cultures.Foreign language classeould be required to include lessons about history, literature, customs, and government along with the languages themselves. These subjects will help students become better global citizens and support their studies in other subjects.

205294. (2021•阎良区•高二下期末) 15-year-old Max produced the Vybpro,a wearable wristband(腕带)which warns users whenever they are about to touch their faces. The gesture has been recognized as one of the key ways that COVID-19 can be spread, making it a potentially life-saving invention.
He first hit on the excellent idea two years ago for the purpose of reducing the spread of the cold and flu. After both of Max's parents were infected with COVID-19 four months ago, however,he put in all his effort to develop a working prototype (模型).
Worn on both wrists, the intelligent device is expected to sell for £ 89.It uses position-sending technology algorithms (算法)to tell between predicted face touching and other hand motions. Then the device warns users of hand gestures that are dangerously near the face.
"We came up with the concept a few years ago when my family was repeatedly catching cold and flu viruses from traveling in and out of London and I could see how easy it was to pick up germs especially from using public transport," said Max. 205226. (2021•长安区一中•高二上期末) Teenagers from low-income families in particular are more likely than their middle-class peers(同龄人)to do less well in schoolwork and to dropout of school.Studies have shown, however, that a positive attitude towards schoolwork and the support and encouragement from their parents can help at-risk youngsters to overcome the economic barriers and lack of resources they face. Most of the evidence about the effects of parental involvement(参与) comes from research on mothers.Little is known, however, about how teenagers experience their fathers' warmth and the beliefs and behavior that are most affected by it.
This new study is part of a large one focusing on low-income families conducted in four middle schools in the southwestern United States.Researchers asked 183 sixth-graders about how optimistic and motivated they were about their schoolwork, and how they experienced their fathers' warmth. The students' maths and language arts grades were also gained. The research team took into account the influence that mothers have on their children's well-being in their analyses.
Their findingow how fathers can support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism and higher achievement at school."Low-income fathers affect their teenagers' beliefs about themselves and their future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determination to complete school tasks," says Dr.Marie-Anne.
These positive effects extend to both sons and daughters, although in different ways.Experiencing their fathers' warmth first influences daughters' sense of optimism, and then spills over into their feeling more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better maths grades. There is a more direct link between their fathers' love and boys' belief in their ability to succeed in academy.

A.They will be more determined to struggle.
B.They will have fewer happy things to share.

C.It combines questionnaire data and students' grades.
D.It mainly focuses on the effects of fathers' involvement.
(3)What can we know about fathers' warmth?
A.It is less effective than that of mothers.
B.It affects girls and boys in different ways.
C.It mainly applies to girls rather than boys.
D.It has a more direct effect on girls than on boys.

205136. (2022•鄠邑区•高一下期末) People have used pigeons to carry messages to one another for hundreds of years. In fact, pigeons were a common way to send messages right up through World War II.
In 1815,English troops were fighting Napoleon's forces in France, and the English were believed to be losing.A financial panic swept over London.Government bonds(债券)were offered at low prices.Few people noticed that Nathan Rothschild,an English banker, was snapping up these bonds when everyone else was trying to sell them.A few days later,London learned the truth:the Duke of Wellington had defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. The value of the bonds soared (暴涨),and Rothschild became wealthy…all because his pigeons had brought him news of the victory before anyone else knew of it.
Carrier pigeons were used by countries in both World War I and World War II.Not only were the birds often the fastest, most reliable way to send messages, they could also be used to reach soldiers far behind enemy lines, where radios and field telephone lines were useless.Since they could easily be released from airplanes or ships, every branch of the armed services used the birds.
Carrying messages could be a dangerous job. Some pigeons performed with such bravery that they became famous and were even awarded medals. The most famous pigeon of all may have been Cher Ami.Stationed in France during World War I,he carried twelve important messages for American forces. On his last mission, though wounded,he carried a message that saved the lives of 194 American soldiers. For his amazing service,he was awarded the French "Croix de Guerre."

(2022•蓝田县•高二下期末) The lack of clues left behind by ancient Americans has made it difficult for researchers to determine precisely when humans first arrived on the continent. However,it has always been believed to be about 13,000 years ago. Now,evidence from the Chiquihuite Cave in Zacatecas,Central Mexico, seems to suggest that prehistoric humans may have been living in North America as early as 30,000 years ago.
Dr.Ciprian Ardelean,of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas who led the groundbreaking re- search, first became aware of the cave in May 2010.Getting to the cave located 2,750 meters above sea level required a 45-minute truck ride to the base and an uphill climb over a rough terrain.However,Dr.Ardelean and his team found enough clues to make the difficult journey three additional times-in 2012,2016,and -2017.
The archeologists' efforts revealed many artifacts including over 1,900 stone tools from multiple layers of the cave. The scientists found that most of the tools were between 16,000 and 13,000 years old.However,239 artifacts unearthed from the deepest layer of the cave dated back an astonishing 30,000 years!
While the genetic material gained in the cave was only plant and animal DNA,the team did find evidence of sulfur, potassium and zinc elements that could indicate human activities such as killing animals.Dr.Ardelean says the absence of human DNA confirms that the early people visited the cave for short periods of time.
The researchers are unsure of the ancient humans' origins or the path they took to get to America. They guess the groups were tribes (部落)who moved from place to place and went extinct at some point during their migrations.Dr.Ardelean says, "We don't know who they were, where they came from or where they went. They're a complete enigma. We falsely assume that the native populations in the Americas to- day are direct descendants from the earliest Americans, but now we don't think that is the case. " Archeologist Loren Davis, from Oregon State University,is unsure that the artifacts recovered are tools. The researcher says, "If it's true that people were in Zacatecas 32,000 years ago, that changes everything-it more than doubles the time people have been in the Americas.I'm not going to say it's impossible, but if all they found are broken rocks without any hard evidence,it's natural for people to challenge the conclusion. 219290. (2022•铁路中学•高二下二月) Travelers to a new city are often encouraged to take a bus tour. The thinking is that they can later return to the places that attracted them, but that's nonsense! What you see from the inside of a fast-moving bus is sanitized(净化过的)and unreal, entirely removed from the real sights, sounds, and smells outside.
The best way to experience any destination is on foot, without an itinerary, wandering where your spirit leads you.Even in the largest cities, the savvy(资深的) traveler plunges into the very center of town and walks down the nearest street, experiencing the actual life of the people while looking into the grocery stores and courtyard. You eventually get to many of the same sites that are on the bus route—the museums, the monuments, the city hall—but you will have witnessed so much more because you will have felt the contemporary life of the city you're visiting.
"But what if I get lost?"people ask.No one ever gets permanently lost in a major city.Eventually,a trolley or a bus passes with the words "Central Station" on its front and you can easily return to the center of town.Besides, the most wonderful things can happen if you do get lost, such as stopping at a sidewalk cafe to sit and relax and then asking directions from the locals at the next table.Hopefully, your trip may be attractive by this encounter. Here are a few ways to make the most of your travels:
Know before you go.Before you depart, spend time in a library or bookstore, learning about the history and culture of your destination so you will better understand the place you're visiting.
Move around like a local.Use the local subways, trams and buses. You'll not only save money, but also learn how people live there, and you'll gain a realistic perspective of the city.
Check the bulletin board.Bulletin boards list free lectures, concerts, workshops and social gatherings, giving you a chance to join or meet the area's most dynamic residents.
Take a walking tour.If you must book a guided tour, select the nonstandard, inexpensive kinds conducted on foot.
