213210. (2023•滨河中学•高一上期中) I'm a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year.In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live,we tend to accept the rat race values. As students,we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs.I enjoy studying and have consistently received A's in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad.Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home.Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work.Their constant arguing bothered me,so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job.He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however,is my successful work in the local old folks' home.My grandparents had raised me since I was a child.I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died.Unlike many of my classmates,I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points.I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I'm contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help.I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year,I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments,I'm especially proud of my service at the old folks' home,so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future.I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it,after all.

201901. (2024•长安区•一模)     Shortly before he turned 60,Mark Fuhrmann realized what he wanted. He,now,at 65,has just returned from a second voyage. His 6,835 mile-round trip from Nova Scotia took in the great lakes of the US,the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic.
Fuhrmann started these journeys "to kickstart retirement" from the maritime PR business he ran in Oslo for the past 30 years. Before he set off,in June last year,he swapped (交换) his house for a flat, and greatly reduced his possessions. "It was good to get rid of all of those things and say: 'This isn't a phase;this is a new season,'" he says.
Amazingly,he didn't plan his trip, beyond committing to fundraise for Medecins Sans Frontières. "I thought: 'I'll try to do 40km each day.' But I never knew where I was going to lay down my head."
The challenges were psychological, physical, and sometimes life-threatening.In Florida,he was chased by an alligator (短吻鳄),but narrowly escaped from it.In the Boston area,he saw "a black fin moving towards me like a snake".He lay his oar (划桨) across his lap and waited. "If a great white shark can swim leisurely, that's exactly what it did.It just passed me," he says.Ten minutes later,Fuhrmann pulled his kayak (小艇) into a cove, where he ran into a man who invited him into his home for coffee and apple pie.His whole trip was filled with these switchbacks and moments of connection with strangers, which Fuhrmann experienced as "a call to authenticity".
What does he mean? "Nature is born within us.If you avoid that, you avoid experiencing something that is vital to who you are as a person.I want real things — life isn't about having more.I think we need to accept where we are at this stage of life,at 60 or 65."
"I look at retirement as a season," he says.He started his latest voyage because "I wanted to have a better understanding of who I was.I wanted to have time for my thoughts to wander,to restart,to discover the value and power within myself."

(1)Why did Fuhrmann get rid of most of his possessions?        ?

(4)Why did Fuhrmann start his latest voyage?        ?

204592. (2023•高新一中•高二下期末) When I win at my favourite games,my opponents tend to say: 'OH,you're so competitive!' But when I lose, they smile good-naturedly and say: 'Bad luck!Good game!'
This suggests that accurate sporting expressionould go something like this:
   I am sporty.
   You are competitive.
   They can't bear to lose.
   Or:
   I gave it a go.
   You did your best.
   He tried desperately hard.
I'm not saying I don't have a competitive personality. We all do.On walks,I like to be out in front. In traffic jams,I find myself focusing on cars in other lanes, and fret if they edge ahead of me.I tense up while waiting for trains, determined to be first aboard. The other day,I was one of the first to board a train, grabbing a perfect spot in first class.Yes,I had won!Just halfway,I went to get a free drink for a first-class seat from the buffet. But I had left my ticket on my table.I worked out that,if I moved very swiftly,I could nip (快走) through two carriages, and nip back without anyone taking my place at the front of the queue.
So I rushed back, picking up my ticket, and turned back.I was at the beginning of the second carriage, when,to my horror,I noticed, another figure, roughly my size, shooting towards the buffet from the other direction.
Desperate to arrive before he did,I started walking faster. But at exactly the same moment,he started walking faster, too.Trying to retain my dignity,I broke into a running.Whatever happened,I was determined to win! But,annoyingly,at the same time as I sped up,so did he.The race was on.
Finally,in my rush,I knocked into a suitcase and stumbled slightly.Still with my eyes on my challenger,I noticed that-strange but true-exactly the same thing had happened to him.
It was only as we both lifted ourselves up in exactly the same way that I realised that, throughout the race,I had been looking at a reflection of myself in the sliding door!
My competitor for first place in the buffet queue was...me.

213077. (2023•莲湖区•高二上期中)     In recent fast paced life, the demands and pressures of work left me feeling mentally and physically stressed.I decided to disconnect from my job for a while for a mental break. As a nature lover, without any delay,I came to Borneo, the world's third largest island.
Upon arrival,a local offered to be my guide, which was a great bonus for me.He led me through the jungle and I was immersed in the exploration. One day,the guide turned off the smooth road and took me across a rough hillside instead. We picked our way gingerly when suddenly,a Rafflesia (大王花) appeared into my view among those stones.More than delighted,I bent down and put my nose practically to feel the flower's special flavour.
As I was approaching the end of my trip, there was another thing highlighting my trip.We happened to encounter the king of the crocodile (鳄鱼),a saltwater crocodile, which can grow to a length of 6 meters. It was getting dark. When we shone a flashlight towards the muddy shore, little sounds emerged in the darkness as if something unseen underwater had broken the mud.Taking a second look,we spotted two greedy eyes just above the water line.Cautiously,we approached it and finally could figure out it was a baby crocodile.Though alarmed,I could proudly talk big that I had encountered a hungry crocodile in the wild and lived to back.
Though I have settled back into the routine of everyday life now,the experience stays long after the physical journey ended.I have learned to face life's challenges with a renewed outlook.Despite the rat race of daily existence, try to spare time to spot the breathtaking beauty of nature and the heartfelt connections with others. The world out there is so fascinating.

205041. (2022•莲湖区•高二下期末) As I put down the exercise equipment,my brain tries to focus on what my trainer has said.
"Describe that to me," asked Rob.He is looking for an answer that required me to connect my brain to my body.
Yes,I know.My brain is connected to my body—the thing that has been carrying my head around for the last 56 years.Since completing my undergraduate degree I have been increasingly immobilized by my working life.Sitting still at a desk, staring at a screen,it's mostly through my fingers that I connect to my brain.
"I felt great," I reply. "I could feel it in my back." Rob is quick to encourage and set up more weight. Then cheerfully he'll say "okay, next set."
Every accomplishment in my life has been entered in my head—grades, degrees, promotions, published papers and teaching. But on reflection,I wasn't paying much attention to my body.
Weightlifting is different.Rob is a trainer and manager at my local gym,my guide in helping me with a single goal—get strong.Despite my age, size and beginner status,Rob has made me feel safe.He is always close by,watching and posing questions.Like "where did you feel that?" or the more general request, "Describe that for me."
Early on I took these as rote pleasantries.Over time I realized he wanted more than just routine answers.Having shown me how to do an exercise,Rob would encourage me to think about the muscle or chain of muscles as they moved. The questions were a test of that connection.Gradually,I started thinking my way back into my body. Not my body as a whole but as individual, connections to newly identified places.Intentionally.Specifically.Magically.It's surprisingly difficult.
I am five months into a new way of living with this 56-year-old body.It talks to me in a totally different way now.It reminds me of my capabilities,my muscles calling me to move, demanding to be challenged. And I long to continue this dialogue so that I'm ready the next time Rob says: "Describe that tome."

204903. (2022•雁塔二中•高二下期末) A mild-mannered cat by day,at night Rusty was just the opposite.Often,Bill and I would lie in bed quarreling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.
So,instead,we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do.And always in the morning,if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give.Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, " Do it." My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butter to decide we didn't have much choice.
That night,I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water.Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor.According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink, but they won't do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.
Next,I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each.According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter,he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place,I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting.Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal.A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally,Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.
