In many even most-space-themed films, whenever Earth faces a disaster, the solution is always running away from the planet by spaceship. But the latest Chinese sci-fi movie,The Wandering Earth, offers a different and more ambitious idea.
In the film, based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin,Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun.In response, humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun.Instead of giving it up again this time we're taking it with us.
The "ambition" didn't come from nowhere. For thousands of years, "homeland" has had a soft spot in heart and minds of Chinese people. One old saying is luoyeguigen, which means returning to ones homeland at an old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.Or look to an ancient saying, "Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright. "These both show the tight tie that Chinese people have had with their homeland.
This special cultural background is probably what sets The Wandering Earth apart from Hollywood-style space films.
"What is Chinese sci-fi?" Guo Fan,the films director, said in an interview. "A media that can really express our cultural and spiritual centre can be called Chinese sci-fi.Otherwise,we're just copying others and telling the same American stories."
And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb5,the first day of Chinese New Year.It was a time when many people had just make the hard journey back to their hometowns.
So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story:Earth goes wherever humans go,because it's our home.

When it comes to pigs,we have somehow reached an agreement-that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.
Just look at the idioms and phrases in our languages. In Chinese,we have the likes of "Boiling a dead pig",and"A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig" And in English, there are expressions such as"eating like a pig"and"sweating like a pig".None of them are exactly complimentary.
But the truth is that pig do have some finer qualities. And there's probably no better time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of the Year of the pig on Chinese Spring Festival, which falls on Feb.5 this year.
For starters, science long ago proved that pigs aren't stupid at all.According to a paper published in 2017 in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology, pigs are "mentally and socially similar to dogs and chimpanzees." They like to play. They have good long-term memories. And they know the difference between those who treat them well and those who don't.
There are lovely pig characters in cartoons, too.Peppa Pig,for example,a UK animated television series that began in 2004,has now become one of the most popular cartoons in 180 countries and regions. The four members in the cartoon's pig family teach children from all over the world about love, friendship, and the value of family. And in China, the adventures of McDull,a piglet who works hard toward his dreams even though he keeps failing, have been moved to films since 2001.
Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep in mind when we celebrate this Chinese New Year-their intelligence, cuteness, patience and kindness.

When we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often think, "I'm going to bed earlier tomorrow!"But however determined we are.chances are that we don't keep our promise.
This behavior is called"bedtime procrastination(拖延)",and results from lack of self-control and our body clock, reported HuffPost.According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2014,bedtime procrastination is a common problem. In their study,53 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn't follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week .
It's found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn't stop doing other little things, which were keeping them up in the first place."People who generally have trouble resisting temptations and adhering to their intentions(抵制诱惑和坚持己见的人)are also more likely to delay going to bed, "Floor Kroese,a psychologist at Utrecht University, further explained to HuttPost.Yet,according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only reason. Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bedtime.
In order to check the influence of the body clock on sleep, psychologists at Ulm University in Germany studied the sleep patterns of 108 people in February. It was found that those who get up late are more likely to put off their bedtime than those who wake early every morning.
And more surprisingly, night owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. It's their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime, reported Popular Science.
"The willing to go to bed earlier is not enough,"Jana Kuhnel,a psychologist at Ulm University, concluded in Popular Science. "Biological processes need to support this idea.
