218392. (2022•长安区一中•高三上二月) Most heroes are not super. They don't appear in comic books,on television,or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place.Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle,Washington. He's a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago,he was looking for a bike for his wife.He found one on Craigslist,a website where people list things they want to sell.As he often does,he also looked at Bike Index,a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they're taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike's owner and arranged to meet him- supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met,Bike Batman told the thief, "You've got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here,or you can just get out of here." You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success,Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist,he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index.Once he has confirmed it with the owner,he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case,Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called "Robin Hood".Since he wasn't exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, "Batman" seemed a better fit.The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him,but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle's reputation as a friendly city.

201806. (2024•西安中学•七模)     Charles Darwin was born in 1809 in Shrewsbury,England. His father,a doctor, had high hopes that his son would earn a medical degree at Edinburgh University in Scotland, where he was admitted at the age of sixteen. It turned out that Darwin was more interested in natural history than medicine. While he continued his studies at Cambridge,it was his focus on natural history that became his passion.
In 1831,Darwin set out on a voyage as a naturalist aboard a ship of the British Royal Navy, the HMS Beagle. The main purpose of the trip was to survey the coastline of South America and chart its harbors to make better maps of the region.
Darwin spent much of the trip on land collecting samples of plants, animals, rocks, and fossils. He explored regions in Brazil,Argentina,Chile, and remote islands such as the Galápagos. He packed all of his samples into large wooden containers and sent them back to England aboard other large ships.
Upon his return to England in 1836,Darwin's work continued.Studies of his samples and notes from the trip led to groundbreaking scientific discoveries.Fossils he collected led to advances in the understanding of the processes that shape the Earth's surface.Darwin's analysis of the plants and animals he gathered led him to question how species form and change over time. This work convinced him of the insight that he is most famous for —natural selection. The theory of natural selection says that individuals of a species are more likely to survive in their environment and pass on their genes to the next generation when they inherit traits from their parents that are best suited for that specific environment. In this way, such traits become more widespread in the species and can lead eventually to the development of a new species.
In 1859,Darwin published his thoughts about evolution and natural selection in On the Origin of Species. The book convinced many people that species change over time —a lot of time—suggesting that the planet was much older than what was commonly believed at the time:six thousand years.
Charles Darwin died in 1882 at the age of seventy-three.He is buried in Westminster Abbey in London,England.

218394. (2022•长安区一中•高三上二月) Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage(绷带)that can signal the type of bacterial(细菌的) infection it's protecting, just like a traffic light,as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this:Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics(抗生素)and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.
It's easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations.Treatment doesn't have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What's more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what's happening with the infection,if there's an infection at all.The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapy or PDT.
We've been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science-like the nanofibre mesh that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there's the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can do while it's protecting a wound, the better.Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what's going on too.

(1)What is the smart bandage mainly designed to do?
A.Avoid the use of antibiotics.
B.Clear out harmful bacteria.
C.Detect bacterial infections.
D.Increase treatment options.
(2)What is the advantage of the smart bandage?
A.It saves much time and cost.
B.It removes the risk of infection.
C.It prevents the bacterial resistance.
D.It improves doctor-patient relationship.
(3)What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Traditional bandages are out of use now.
B.More smart bandages will be developed.
C.Progress in science calls for more research.
D.People are urged to study medical science.
(4)What does the text focus on?
A.A successful test on mice.
B.A colour-changing bandage.
C.Sensing drug-resistant bacteria.
D.Preventing abuse of antibiotics.

203478. (2015•师大附中•四模) In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad;that it sets one person against another;that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self - worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life - and - death affairs. In their single - minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self - respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

(1)What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Competition helps to set up self - respect.
B.Opinions about competition are different among people.
C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
(2)Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A.It pushes society forward.
B.It builds up a sense of duty.
C.It improves personal abilities.
D.It encourages individual efforts.
(3)The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means
A.those who try their best to win
B.those who value competition most highly
C.those who are against competition most strongly
D.those who rely on others most for success
(4)Which point of view may the author agree to
A.Every effort should be paid back.
B.Competition should be encouraged.
C.Winning should be a life - and - death matter.
D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

203359. (2016•西工大附中•八模) So hungry do some plants get that they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What's more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they're found on every continent except Antarctica.
You've probably seen a Venus' flytrap. It's often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets.A small plant,it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (茎) are specially modified leaves that act like traps.Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger (触发) hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shuts.Over the course of a week or so,the plant feeds on its catch.
The Venus' flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice,the editor of the International Carnivorous(食肉的)Plant Society's Newsletter.Note:Despite any science-fiction stories you might have read,no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.
Dr.Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating,only if it does all four of the following:"attract, kill, digest, and absorb"some form of insects, including flies, butterflies, and moths.Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants---well,most of the time.
All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis (光合作用).Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes"meat-eating"plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason:nitrogen (氮).Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can't obtain any other way. While almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil,"meat-eating"plants can't.They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they've come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact,nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to"meat-eating"plants.Never fertilize them! But don't worry, either,if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they'll grow very slowly.
(1)According to the passage,carnivorous plants
A.only grow in wild field
B.cannot grow on Antarctica
C.are as common as flies
D.are rare to see
(2)Venus' flytrap preys on insects by
A.its numerous long and thin stalks
B.a container where it grows
C.the lining of tiny trigger hairs
D.its insect-catching leaves
(3)We can conclude from the third paragraph that
A.carnivorous plants are dangerous
B.carnivorous plants are harmless to humans
C.carnivorous plants occasionally eat books
D.carnivorous plants are fictional
(4)In the eyes of the author, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Carnivorous plants can grow in nutrient-poor soil.
B.Carnivorous plants cannot grow in acid soil.
C.Carnivorous plants will die if they cannot catch any insects.
D.Carnivorous plants can get nitrogen from nutrient-rich soil.

205227. (2021•长安区一中•高二上期末) Captured(捕获的)carbon dioxide(CO2)could be used to extract(提炼)useful metals(金属)from recycled technology such as smartphone batteries rather than just being buried underground. The technique could help make it more economical to capture the greenhouse gas before it enters the atmosphere.
"If you also extract metals by filling CO2,you add value to a process that is known to be costly," says Julien Leclaire at the University of Lyon,France.
CO2 is the main cause of modern climate change,so many people have attempted to develop technologies to capture it when it comes from power plants and other major sources. The gas can then be stored underground. The problem is that such carbon capture and storage(CCS)is expensive."No one wants to pay the price for it," says Leclaire.
To make CCS more appealing,Leclaire's team has found a use for the gas.
His team collected CO2 from a car gas, cooledit, then pumped it into a mix of chemicals.
The CO2combined with the mix to make many molecules(分子)of variouapes and sizes.
The team found that this process could sort out mixtures of metals, because one metal would dissolve(溶解)in the liquid while another would form a solid. In a series of experiments, they successfully separated three kinds of metals-all of which are used in batteries, smart phones and computers.
If the process can be widely used,it could be a more environmentally friendly way to recycle batteries and other electrical equipment, says Leclaire. This is normally done using highly reactive chemicals, which are potentially polluting.Replacing them with CO2 should lead to a much lower environmental pollution,he says.
Other researchers and companies are trying to change captured CO2 into useful materials like plastics, which are normally produced from petrol, but this is chemically difficult.Leclaire says his approach is more inline with how CO2 behaves naturally."Instead of copying what we know how to do better and cheaper with oil, let's find things you can only do with CO2," he says.

(1)What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Extracting useful metals from recycled technology is widely used now.
B.Useful metals in the atmosphere are used to make smart phone batteries.
C.Abandoned smart phone batteries may have been buried underground before.
D.The greenhouse gas CO2 could be cleaned up after entering the atmosphere.
(2)Why are many people attempting to capture CO2
A.CO2 is the main cause of modern climate change.
B.CO2 can be used to recycle many resources.
C.Captured CO2 can be changed to useful gas.
D.CO2 is harmful to people's health.
(3)What benefit could Leclaire's team's approach bring?
A.It could end the use of plastics.
B.It could reduce environmental pollution.
C.It could make more metals available to humans.
D.It could help reduce the cost of battery production.
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A.The Ways to Make Smart phone Batteries
B.The Reason for Capturing Greenhouse Gas
C.Collecting CO2 Is Starting to Make New Progress
D.Captured CO2 Could Be Used to Help Recycle Useful Metals

203406. (2016•西工大附中•七模) Andy Steele lives just a few blocks from the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish,S.D.,so commuting(经常往返) to class isn't the problem. But he doesn't like lectures much, isn't a morning person, and wants time during the day to restore motorcycles.
So Steele,a full-time senior business major, has been taking as many classes as he can from the South Dakota State system's online offerings. He gets better grades and learns more,he says, and insists he isn't missing out on the college experience.
"I still know a lot of people from my first two years living on campus, and I still meet a lot of people," he says. But now,he sets his own schedule.
At least 2.3 million people took some kind of online courses, according to a recent survey by the Sloan Consortium,an online education group, and two-thirds of colleges offering "face-to-face" courses also offer online ones. But what were once two different types of classes are looking more and more alike and often falling into the same pool of students.
At some schools, online courses originally intended for non-traditional students living far from campus have proved surprisingly popular with on-campus students.A recent study found 42 percent of the students enrolled in its distance education courses were located on campus at the university that was hosting the online courses.
Numbers vary depending on the policies of particular colleges, but other schools also have students mixing and matching online and "face-to-face" credits.Motives range from lifestyle to adapting to a job schedule to getting into high-demand courses.
Washington State had about 325 on-campus undergraduates taking one or more distance courses last year.As many as 9,000 students took both distance and in-person classes at Arizona State last year.
"Business is really about providing choices to their customers, and that's really what we want to do," said Sheila Aaker, extended services coordinator (协调人) at Black Hills State.
Many schools, such as Washington State and Arizona State, let departments and academic units decide who can take an online course. They say students with legitimate academic needs - a conflict with another class,a course they need to graduate that is full - often get permission, though they still must take some key classes in person.

(1)What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce Steele to us,who prefers online courses.
B.To tell us about the development of campus courses.
C.To show the differences between campus courses and online courses.
D.To show more on-campus students are taking online courses.
(2)We can learn from the passage that Andy Steele
A.lives far from the campus
B.knows none of his classmates
C.wants to have his own lifestyle
D.doesn't get good marks
(3)Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The undergraduates attend the online courses for different purposes.
B.It is expected that distance education is popular with on-campus students.
C.About 325 on-campus undergraduates took online courses in Washington last year.
D.Different colleges have different policies about online courses.
(4)From what Sheila Aaker said in the passage,we can tell
A.business is the most popular major in universities
B.collegeould provide more majors for students
C.where the similarity between business and colleges lies
D.why colleges offer online courses to on-campus students

203408. (2016•西工大附中•七模) The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby.Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother.During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so,however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on "mother"- the real mother or the mother-substitute.
During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows,a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes - one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire.If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However,if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites.Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.
Why is cloth preferable to bare wire?Something that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is.Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers' skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can.Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed,or annoyed,it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body.Wire doesn't "rub" as well as does soft cloth.Prolonged (长时间的) "contact comfort" with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby's love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be.It screams in terror and curls up into a furry little ball.If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort,it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well.Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding onto its "mother."

203409. (2016•西工大附中•七模) More than 20 Chinese and American experts discovered that young people of both countries are facing the same problems of economic and social pressures and lack of confidence.Wayne Meisel, director of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League of Minnesota University, said that under economic pressure American young people have to work hard and most students have to take part-time work in order to support themselves. In these circumstances,he said, young people lack confidence, which was not the case in the 1960s when young people thought themselves capable of doing anything. In spite of the different conditions in China,Li Xuequan, director of the higher education section of the All-China Youth Federation, said Chinese young people are also facing economic pressure and are worried about inflation and corruption. In order to solve these problems, the Chinese and American experts agreed that youth organization should call on the whole of society to create favourable conditions for the healthy growth of young people,as well as to encourage them to meet the urgent needs of society.Meisel said that since last year he has sent letters of"challenge to youth"to many young people, urging them to commit themselves to meet such needs as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, caring for the lonely and sick, serving the elderly and preserving the environment. The letter says:"Through the service,we touch the lives of others and enrich our own."

203439. (2015•师大附中•一模) Our body clock,or natural body rhythm, influences our energy and alertness(警觉).paying attention to it can help us choose the suitable time of day when we best perform specific tasks.
The reality, however,is that most of us organize their time around work demands, school deadlines, commuting or social events.Doing whatever your body feels like doing is a luxury in today's fast-paced modern society.
But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying.Obeying our body clock has significant health benefits.Disrupting our natural body rhythm,on the other hand, has been linked to problems such as depression, obesity,or headache, says Steve Key,a biology professor.
When the body clock can synchronize(使……同步)the rhythms of its natural processes,it "gives us an advantage in daily life",says Key.
According to him, when it comes to cognitive (认知的) work, most adults perform best in the late morning. As our body temperature starts to rise just before awakening in the morning and continues to increase until midday, our memory, alertness and concentration gradually improve.
However,he adds, our ability to concentrate typically starts to decrease soon thereafter. Most of us are more easily distracted (分心) between noon and 4pm.
Alertness also tends to fall after eating a meal and sleepiness tends to peak around 2pm,making that a good time for a nap.
Surprisingly, tiredness may increase our creative powers. For most adults, problems that require open ended thinking are often best dealt with in the evening when they are tired, according to a study in the journal Thinking & Reasoning.
When choosing a time of day to exercise, paying attention to your body clock can improve results.Physical performance is usually best from about 3 to 6 pm,says Michael Smolensky,a professor of biomedical engineering.
Of course, not everyone's body clock is the same, making it even harder to synchronize natural rhythms with daily plans.

(1)If we know our natural body rhythm well,we can.
A.organize our time around work demands
B.find out the suitable time to do specific tasks
C.do whatever our body feels like doing
D.be sure to be healthy
(2)Inspiration to solve a difficult problem will most probably come to us
A.when we get up in the morning
B.when we are full of energy in the late morning
C.when we are tired in the evening
D.when we are asleep at night
(3)The main purpose of the passage is to
A.criticize
B.persuade
C.encourage
D.inform
(4)Which of the following can be the suitable title for the passage?
A.Something About Natural Body Rhythm
B.Natural Body Rhythm Is Bad For Us.
C.What Is Natural Body Rhythm?
D.All The Research About Natural Body Rhythm

203440. (2015•师大附中•一模) About 6 percent of luxury hotels in three major Chinese cities have stopped serving shark fin (鱼翅),a survey has found.Although the controversial dish remains on the menu at most hotels,Green Beagle Environment Institute,a Beijing-based non-government organization that was the main sponsor of the survey, said the results are encouraging and reflect increased awareness.
The survey was carried out in Beijing,Shenzhen and Fuzhou, which were selected as representative cities to collect basic data on shark fin consumption nationwide. In Beijing,132 hotels completed the phone questionnaire between Nov.20 and Dec.12.Only 12 hotels,9 percent, said they do not serve shark fin.A similar survey of 131 Beijing hotels conducted a year ago found only one hotel that did not serve shark fin,Wang Xue,chief coordinator (协调人) of the survey, said on Saturday. In Shenzhen, four out of the 85 four and five star hotels surveyed had stopped serving shark fin, accounting for about 5 percent. In Fuzhou, only one of the 40 hotels surveyed did not serve shark fin.On average, about 6.61 percent of the hotels in the three cities did not serve the food.
"The survey reminded us there is still a long way to go to remove shark fins from Chinese hotels and restaurants, but the improved situation in Beijing is encouraging," said Wang. 203477. (2015•师大附中•四模) Scientists recently discovered that pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags are the oldest known in Great Britain. But they didn't find out in the usual way.
Archaeologists often date cave art with a process called radiocarbon dating. The technique can measure the age of carbon found in charcoal(木炭)drawings or painted pictures.Carbon is an element found in many things, including charcoal and even people. But in this case, there was no paint or charcoal to test.People carved the pictures of animals and figures into the rock using stone tools. The scientists had an "aha!" moment when they noticed small rocks stuck to the top of the drawings. The small rocks must have formed after the drawings were made.
"It is rare to be able to scientifically date rock art," said Alistair Pike,an archaeological scientist at Britain's University of Bristol. "We were very fortunate that some of the engravings were covered by stalagmites(石笋).
When a test proved that the stalagmites formed 12,800 years ago,the scientists knew the art underneath them had to be at least that old.And some of the animalown, like the European bison, are now extinct--another tip-off that the art is quite old.
The artists came to Creswell Crags,This place is one of the farthest points north reached by our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age.At that time, much of the North Sea was dry,so people could move about more easily.
Some tools and bones found there are 13,000 to 15,000 years old. They show that the travelers hunted horses, reindeer, and arctic hare.Their artwork is similar to art in France and Germany. It tells scientists that the Creswell Crags artists must have had a close connection to peoples several thousand kilometers away-another important clue to understanding how humans spread out across the world.

B.The animals carved in the stone are beautiful.
C.The cave is one of the farthest points in the world.
D.Some pictures were covered by stalagmites more than 10,000 years old.

203516. (2015•西工大附中•八模) Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work, you may say that you're"hot".That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语)as"Get up,John! You'll be late for work again!"The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening.Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better.Habit can help.Dr.Kleitman believes.Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway.Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to.If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up energy and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy.Get up with a yawn and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

A.Change Your Habits
B.Save Your Energy
C.Daily Energy Cycle
D.Temperature-and-Energy Peak
