214515. (2020•西安一中•高一下期中) I didn't know how to say no,and was afraid to tell people what I wanted.Instead,I got myself tangled (纠结的) in a web of obligations, anxiety, and white lies.
The worst thing was that I didn't even realize what I was doing.I thought I knew how to say "no"-but couldn't remember the last time I had.Like a lot of people,I just wanted to be accepted,appreciated,loved-and that the only way to get those things was to put everyone else's needs before my own.
I never seemed to have time for things I really wanted to do.I'd like to learn Spanish, write more fiction, and travel. These aren't huge, unrealistic goals. And yet,my people-pleasing ways dramatically cut into my free time to pursue these desires.
But recently,I decided I'd had enough. As an experiment,I began standing up for myself, even at the risk of alienating (使疏远) myself from everyone and having my entire life come crashing down around me.Several days ago,a good friend asked me to go for coffee at 5 p.m.I was planning to hit the gym and then binge-watch Mad Men for the millionth time.I said, "Sorry,I've got things I want to do tonight." She said, "That's fine.Maybe another time." It was all so painfully simple that I wanted to cry.
Saying "no" is so much easier. If someone asks me to do something I have zero interest in,I'm polite but honest. "I'm sorry,I don't think that's really for me." The words slip out my mouth faster than some other lame excuses.
Learning how to say "no" has added several extra hours to my days, days to my weeks, and what feels like months to my years.I no longer have to back-burner my plans to help friends with their job search,or set aside a weekend to read a book draft by someone I barely know.Saying "no" has set me free.

(1)Why was the author afraid of saying "no"?
A.She didn't want to tell lies.
B.She wanted to make more friends.

A.She alienated many friends.
B.She was kept busy all day long.
C.She felt depressed now and then.
D.She had no time for her own hobbies.
(3)What was her friend's reaction when she said "no" to her?
A.Natural.
B.Painful.
C.Angry.
D.Disappointed.

203033. (2017•铁一中学•一模) ONE day I saw a TV advertisement.A couple - she in a black dress,he in a super-stylish shirt and tie - was enjoying a candlelit (烛光的) meal accompanied by romantic music. The location?Pizza Hut.I nearly choked on my tea.
"What?!" I laughed to my Chinese friend. "Pizza Hut is trying to be all gourmet(美食的)and fashionable?!" My friend looked confused. "But Pizza Hut is fashionable," she said. " You go there for a special meal."
In China, chain restaurants-especially the big multinational ones-are cool.Going to Starbucks, for example,is a status symbol. It not only says, " I'm rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee," but also, "I'm cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization."
Where I come from in the UK,however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet.Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere are neither fashionable nor gourmet.Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere else is open,or when you are 5 years old and your parents can't stand hearing. "I'm hungry!" any longer. In my own case(with regards to McDonald's),a chain is where you are taken on your first "date".Even at the age of 13,I knew to give the guy the "let's just be friends" phone call the next day.
In the UK,independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene.Nowadays,a Londoner who says "let's meet for a coffee at Monmouth" (an independent café) is much cooler than one says "let's go to Starbucks",Even if Monmouth's coffee is a little more expensive, there's a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren't going straight to the big corporations.
Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK;you can't go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.I do,however, have a confession. After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much.I,too, have retreated to McDonald's.Even so,I would never describe my Big Mac as "haute cuisine."
(1)Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because
A.the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture
B.the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants
C.they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status
D.these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date
(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The author has grown tired of Chinese food.
B.Branches of Monmouth's café can be found all over the UK.
C.Most independent stores are closed on New Year's Day in the Uk.
D.It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.
(3)What does the underlined word " haute cuisine" in the last paragraph mean?
A.high-class cookery
B.expensive cookers
C.delicious food
D.a fashionable tradition
(4)What is the main point of the article?
A.The difference between Chinese food and the western food.
B.The comeback of independent cafes and restaurants in the UK
C.What makes chain restaurants gourmet and fashionable both in China and the UK.
D.The different attitudes towards chain restaurants of Chinese and British people.

202691. (2020•西安中学•二模) I always wanted to be extraordinarily good at something. Not just as in, "Great job,Jimbo!" No,I wanted to be best-in-class,awe-inspiring,tiptop:a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps,or Mark Zuckerberg.
Unfortunately,my version of reality did not quite line up with this delusional vision.I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.
Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond.God apparently had other plans.
What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose of it.Why couldn't I be like Bernie Williams, the famed New York Yankees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso?
Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time.Around ten thousand hours,to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell.I don't question the theory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one's expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don't.
I've heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results,we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealized youthful expectations.
   Hope bends,it seems.

(3)According to the writer, what makes "greatness"?
A.Extraordinary efforts.
B.Ten thousand hours of practice.
C.Raw talent.
D.Talent and time.
(4)Which of the following might be the best title?

202833. (2020•西工大附中•四模) We may think we're a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight of something shiny and new,but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices (装置) well after they go out of style. That's bad news for the environment and our wallets-as these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things.
To figure out how much power these devices are using,Callie Babbitt and her colleagues at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for each product throughout its life from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using the device. This method provided a readout for how home energy use has evolved since the early 1990s.Devices were grouped by generation.Desktop computers, basic mobile phones, and box-set TVs defined 1992.Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997.And MP3 players, smart phones, and LCD TVs entered homes in 2002,before tablets and e-readerowed up in 2007.
As we accumulated more devices, however,we didn't throw out our old ones. "The living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids' room, and suddenly one day,you have a TV in every room of the house," said one researcher. The average number of electronic devices rose from four per household in 1992 to 13 in 2007.We're not just keeping these old devices -we continue to use them.According to the analysis of Babbitt's team, old desktop monitors and box TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy, consumption and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions (排放) more than doubling during the 1992 to 2007 window.
So what's the solution (解决方案)?The team's data only went up to 2007,but the researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new electronics that serve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV viewing. They found that more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.

D.To find out electricity consumption of the devices.
(3)Which of the following uses the least energy?
A.The box-set TV.
B.The tablet.
C.The LCD TV.
D.The desktop computer.
(4)What does the text suggest people do about old electronic devices?
A.Stop using them.
B.Take them apart.
C.Upgrade them.
D.Recycle them.

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture touched me.It gave the clothing sizes of each family member.I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves.I said to my seven-year-old twins,Brad and Brett,Megan, and three-year-old Meghan, "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We'll shall what we have with them."
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things.Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away.A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy,he much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh,dear," I said. "You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy,Mummy.Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too."

202672. (2020•西安中学•三模) I used to spend the second half of Sunday fearing Monday morning.Over the years, little tweaks to my routine have changed things to the point that I am in the "I Love Mondays" camp. Here's what I've found that works:
Consider Sunday nights your warm-up for Monday.Get everything you need for the morning ready to go.If mornings are a struggle…give it a try at least for Mondays and see if it makes a difference.Once that's done, consider a special "Sunday Night Only" calming down ritual (惯例).It might be tea and a favorite TV show,or it might be a long hot bath and reading until you're ready for sleep.Whatever it is,enjoy this Monday morning warm-up,and consider sleeping a little earlier than you're used to,in order to help with the second step.
One of my favorite parts of the weekend is sleeping in and waking up when I'm ready instead of fighting with the alarm for "Just five more minutes!" Sleeping a little early on Sunday night can help with getting up a little early on Monday morning - not to pack more into your morning to-do list, but to give yourself time to take it slowly. When you have a little extra time in the morning, you can gently settle into the day and keep that weekend feeling of ease as you start your new week.
Find a theme for the week.Every Monday,I post an inspiring quote or saying. These are intentional! Each week,as part of my Sunday night calming down time,I consider what I'd like to focus on in the coming week, and look for a quote that's a good fit to strengthen it.
What are you excited about for the new week? What problem-solving opportunities do you have? What's been hanging over your head undone from last week?During your preparation time on Sunday night, think about the week ahead and mark a few things that you want to get done and can reasonably accomplish. If possible, schedule at least one of them for Monday,so you've started your week off feeling successful, instead of feeling like there's a mountain of tasks ahead of you.The work is the same either way,but our attitudes are always within our control.
When you are intentionally creating a life you love,Mondays begin to feel less like drudgery(单调乏味的苦差事),and more like a beautiful start!

(1)The underlined word "tweaks" is the closest in meaning to
A.mistakes
B.problems
C.adjustments
D.encouragements
(2)What's the benefit of getting up early enough on Monday morning?
A.You can get to your office and start work in time.
B.You can have enough time to sit with your tea or coffee.
C.You can have the weekend feeling longer by starting slowly.
D.You can have enough time to make a to-do list for the week.
(3)What does the author want to indicate in Para.5?
A.Be confident to solve the problems.
B.Look for opportunities for the week.
C.Arrange your tasks well for the week.
D.Positive attitude means a happy Monday.
(4)What might be the best title for this passage?
A.Monday Morning Warm Up
B.How to Love Your Mondays
C.How to Spend Your Mondays
D.Troublesome Monday Disease

205770. (2018•西安一中•高二上期末) I am Henry Jekyll.I was born in the 1800s.I inherited(继承) a large fortune,a healthy body and an excellent mind.I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job.So the outside world saw a serious,hard-working,successful doctor.Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild,fun-loving,irresponsible young man. Both of them were me.They lived together in the same body.
"Was it possible," I wondered, "to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?"
After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer.I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug.At last I got everything ready.
Late one night,I mixed everything together and prepared my drug.I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely,I drank every bitter drop.
I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place.Wild thoughts danced through my mind-the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. "If this is pure evil," I thought, "I like it."
I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I waorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room,I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.
At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side.Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man.I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men.Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde's eyes.I felt no dislike, however.Indeed,I welcomed him.Edward Hyde was me,young and strong and full of life.

(1)The writer wanted to find a drug to
A.discover the right mixture of chemicals
B.create separate bodies for both sides
C.observe the change of the chemicals
D.make himself smaller but stronger
(2)From the passage we can learn that the writer
A.felt quite delighted right after taking the drug
B.preferred kind Henry to pure evil Edward
C.was very sick of the shorter Edward Hyde
D.was satisfied with both of his bodies

205753. (2018•西安一中•高一上期末) Late that afternoon I took the train back to Sydney. There I found another surprise waiting for me.My room had been given to somebody else and they had no room for me.Harkin had known my travel plans and had arranged everything;how could he have booked the room only for three days? There was nothing to be done but to find another hotel. The waiters were happy to find me a new hotel, and when I said that I was happy to stay at the Airport, thinking it might be cheaper than staying in the city, they suggested the Holiday Inn at the airport. There was one small matter:the room rate was$300 per night. The best hotel in Katoomba had wanted only$145.I asked if there were anything cheaper they might suggest but they warned that most hotels would already be full by this time.
The hotel was far from the train station,so I'd best take a taxi,at$25.On the way to the Holiday Inn,we passed a hotel just two blocks from the Holiday Inn that advertised a room rate of $104.At the desk I asked if their room rate could go down a lot. "No,this is a 4-star hotel,"the waiter told me. "In that case," I replied, "I'll just walk the two blocks to the cheap hotel."But she warned me that they were probably full and that if I didn't take the room,it might not be available if I came back. Finally,I decided to take the room.
The room itself was big,but the air conditioning couldn't keep up with the Australian heat.I couldn't get to sleep until about 1:00 am.

By Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer (奇怪的),
To stop without a farmhouse near,
Between the woods and frozen lake,
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness (马具) bells a shake,
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep,
Of easy wind and downy flake (鹅毛般的雪花).

(2015•师大附中•一模) My grandmother was from a town in Michigan.Summer after summer,I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child.I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in.People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older.Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we'd have tea parties. She'd make beautiful quilts for each one.I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.

(2016•西工大附中•四模) "People are ruder today because they are rushed and more'time poor' than ever before,"says Patsy Rowe,"Manners have fallen off the radar(雷达)."Due to our strong attraction to electronic equipment it is a wonder more people don't wake up each morning and greet the singing birds with a complaint(抱怨)about the noise. Here are some examples of rudeness.
Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don't work at 4 G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news,so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的) rude messages by email.
However, rudeness is never acceptable.Don't assume it is OK to be rude if the person you're in touch with won't recognize you.If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it,write a letter or email and sign it,or forget it.Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting.
We shouldn't blame technology for our shortcomings.Technology is here to help us,but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is acknowledging our shortcomings.People spend a lot of time pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we'd publicly acknowledge good manners when we see them.

A.they are growing too independent
B.they are becoming less patient
C.they have to handle many important messages
D.they have to follow an evolutionary step backward.
(3)The author thinks sending unsigned awful messages is
A.ridiculous
B.acceptable
C.disgusting
D.reasonable
(4)What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Technology will take over lives one day.
B.Technology can never be blamed
C.We should keep pointing out mistakes.
D.We should applaud good behavior.

203282. (2016•华清中学•二模) They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon:on foot,on mules(骡子)or by air.We chose the first.Up early,my husband and I and our three children couldn't wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.
As we set out,I waocked at how narrow the path was.And I couldn't help noticing that the other tourists weren't like us.They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher,Arizona's famous heat seemed to roast (烘烤) us.There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind.By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.
The next day, after we'd had a long rest and a good breakfast,we were ready for another view of Canyon-by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.
We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转)the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground.I shouted,"STOP,TAKE US BACK!"When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

203265. (2016•西工大附中•六模) Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another.Choice,we are given to believe,is a right. But for a good many people in the world. In rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get,not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion,a false idea created by companies and advertiser, hoping to sell their products.
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people's lives.Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple.Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away,or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted.Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed.More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors,or advisors.
It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market.Advances in design and production help quicken the process Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem.Gone are the days when one could just walk with case into a shop and buy one thing;no choice,no anxiety.
(1)What does the author try to argue in Paragraph 1?
A.The exercise of rights is a luxury.
B.The practice of choice is difficult.
C.The right of choice is given but at a price.
D.Choice and right exist at the same time.
(2)Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety?
A.Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.
B.People are likely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion.
C.Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.
D.Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the range of choice.
(3)By using computers as an example, the author wants to prove that
A.advanced products meet the needs of people
B.products of the latest design fold the market
C.competitions are fierce in high-tech industry
D.everyday goods need to be replaced often
(4)What is this passage mainly about?
A.The variety of choices in modern society.
B.The opinions on people's right in different countries.
C.The problems about the availability of everyday goods.
D.The helplessness in purchasing decisions.

203225. (2016•西安一中•一模) ONE day I saw a TV advertisement.A couple - she in a black dress,he in a super-stylish shirt and tie - was enjoying a candlelit (烛光的) meal accompanied by romantic music.

203167. (2016•西安中学•四模) In her outstanding book, "Choose the Happiness Habit",Pam Golden wrote, "Take the story of two twin brothers for example. One grew up and became an alcoholic, while the other became a successful businessman. When asked why he became an alcoholic, the alcoholic replied, "Because my father was a drunk." However, the successful businessman's answer was also "Because my father was a drunk." when asked why he succeeded. The same background. The same upbringing. However, the results were quite
different. Why?The reason is that they had different choices. The brothers chose different thoughts which formed the situations they found themselves in at last,so they had different experiences.
There was a time in my life when I thought difficulty was due to "bad luck".Have you ever heard the saying "When it rains,it pours"?That was my answer when others asked me how things were going on when I was in trouble. So what do you think I got?
"RAIN".More and more "RAIN".I couldn't understand why bad luck was always with me.Pam Golden says, "You're either living in the problem or you're living in the solution." Now,when I'm faced with what I used to think was a negative situation,I use a different way to think about it.I force myself to replace those negative thoughts that make me lose heart in my mind with positive thoughts which encourage me to fight against the difficulty bravely.Sometimes I write down some ideas that may be a solution,
which I combine with the lessons I have learned from the bad situations and the difficulties that troubled me in the past, and often,I find a solution to the problem soon.
It seems that I should thank the difficulty I met with. The RAIN that poured in my world has become great experiences that provide me with valuable experience, from which I can benefit.
Now,it doesn't "rain" as much in my life as it used to.In fact, most days are beautiful, cloudless and sunny!Sometimes I do get a rain, but I think it makes me stronger just like the rain helps plants grow up.

C.upbringing makes a big difference
D.making good choices is the most important
(2)What does "RAIN" mentioned in the second paragraph refer to?
A.Water.
B.Difficulty.
C.Success.
D.Good luck.
(3)What is talked about in the third paragraph?
A.How the author collects useful experience.
B.How the author gets help from others.
C.How the author deals with difficulty now.
D.How the author lives in the problem.
(4)Which of the following agrees with the author's attitude now in the text?
A.Meeting with difficulty is not a bad thing.
B.All things are difficult before they are easy.
C.Misfortunes tell us what fortune is.
D.Things at the worst will mend.
