213649. (2023•鄠邑四中•高一下期中) It was the first snow of winter - an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers.Up until now,I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help.Miss Finlayson,my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one.
I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn't fit well.It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots(靴子).
In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots." I didn't realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.
I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot.Like most children,I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.
I announced, "They're on the wrong feet."
She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.
    "They're my brother's boots,you know," I said. "I hate them!"
Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn't an annoying(烦人的)little girl,She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me,she asked, "Now,where are your mittens(连指手套)?"
I looked into her eyes and said, "I didn't want to lose them,so I hid them in the toes of my boots."

(1)The little girl was more satisfied with her
A.trousers
B.jacket
C.boots

(2)Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the girl's boots mainly because
A.the girl got them from her brother
B.the girl put something in them
C.they were on the wrong feet

(3)Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day?
A.Because the little girl was in her brother's clothes.
B.Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.
C.Because the little girl played a trick on her.
D.Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.
(4)We can learn from the text that Miss Finlayson
A.was losing confidence in the little girl

The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread.Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people.By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.

205770. (2018•西安一中•高二上期末) I am Henry Jekyll.I was born in the 1800s.I inherited(继承) a large fortune,a healthy body and an excellent mind.I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job.So the outside world saw a serious,hard-working,successful doctor.Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild,fun-loving,irresponsible young man. Both of them were me.They lived together in the same body.
"Was it possible," I wondered, "to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?"
After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer.I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug.At last I got everything ready.
Late one night,I mixed everything together and prepared my drug.I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely,I drank every bitter drop.
I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place.Wild thoughts danced through my mind-the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. "If this is pure evil," I thought, "I like it."
I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I waorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room,I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.
At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side.Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man.I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men.Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde's eyes.I felt no dislike, however.Indeed,I welcomed him.Edward Hyde was me,young and strong and full of life.

(1)The writer wanted to find a drug to

(2)From the passage we can learn that the writer

205788. (2017•西北大附中•高一下期末) If you live in a big city, there are many things to drive you crazy on your daily route, and it's not just overcrowded subway trains.
Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her,one thing she can't put up with is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯) in subway stations."Escalators help us move faster and save time.It isn't a place to rest,"the 24-year-old says."I often see tourists block the way with their suitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hours. It annoys me to no end."
Admitting she is not the patient type,Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where"stand right, walk left"signs are often ignored.
The logic behind the"stand right, walk left"escalator etiquette(礼仪) seems obvious.Even though you may want to catch your breath while you're transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry,so that they can run and catch the train.
Many cities' escalators, including London's and Beijing's,use the"stand right, walk left"system to speed up the flow of people.(Australia is an exception and you should stand on the left side instead.) But some cities discourage people from moving on escalators out of safety reasons. In Hong Kong's subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to"stand still"on escalators.Even so,most people in this fast-paced city observe the"stand right, walk left"etiquette.
But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves by telling the walkers not to be so impatient. The BBC quotes one stander as saying:"If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs?Even when the escalator is packed and there's nowhere to move,I see these same people complaining about not being able to pass."
Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live or visit,do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others:leave enough space between each other, don't stay at the end of the escalator, and if someone is blocking your way,a simple"excuse me"is enough.

(1)When on the escalator,a majority of local people in Hong Kong
A.stand still as the railway stations require.
B.ignore the"stand right,walk left"signs
C.use the stairs instead of escalators.
D.follow the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
(2)What can be inferred from the 6th paragraph?
A.Not everyone follows the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
B.The BBC is against the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
C.People should be patient and take the stairs if possible.
D.People shouldn't complain about the crowded escalators.
(3)Which of the following statements is the writer's opinion?
A.People should stand right no matter where they are.
B.People should do as the Romans do and consider others.
C.People should do as they like on the escalators.
D.People should be seriously criticized when they block the way.

205805. (2017•西北大附中•高二下期末) I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England, living in a foreign country.By the time I was old enough, however,I thought that my language was going to hold me back.
However, luckily for me,Leeds University, where I was studying at the time, made it possible for any student, even people like myself speaking only one language,to study abroad. Before I knew it I was boarding a plane for Salzburg,Austria.I wasn't quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge.
The university was quite small but the classes were large. Also,Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses,so studying was somewhat more relaxed than at home.Austrian students go home quite often, too. Therefore, the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot, which didn't help our language skills.
Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city.It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. As a result,it is usually very busy with tourists.I also found that it doesn't have a lot going on for young people,in comparison to Leeds.
There were, however, many advantages to living in Salzburg. For example, get on a train and you can be in Prague,Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours.By the end of my year in Salzburg,I had visited eight other countries in Europe.
After spending a year overseas,I went back to my course in Leeds much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunities (机会) university provides. The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just travelling through.I'd recommend all students to spend a year studying abroad if they can.

D.His not knowing a foreign language.
(2)Compared with Leeds University, the university in Salzburg
A.provides more social events
B.has longer university years
C.has more foreign students

(3)One advantage the author mentions about Salzburg is that
A.it's a good location for travelling
B.it has a high-speed rail network
C.it's the hometown of Mozart
D.it's full of foreign tourists
(4)What does the author think of his experience of studying abroad?
A.He benefited a lot from it.
B.He regretted studying abroad.
C.It was far from what he expected.
D.It badly affected his studies at home.

As I stepped inside Convocation Hall,I searched the crowd for my girls, now in their thirties. They were in the highest balcony, waving frantically at me-just as they had done from the catwalk in my drama class so long ago.I will never forget the look on the girls faces as they called out"Hi Mom."I finally felt complete.

205724. (2018•西安中学•高二上期末) Stopping by woods on a snowy evening
By Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer (奇怪的),
To stop without a farmhouse near,
Between the woods and frozen lake,
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness (马具) bells a shake,
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep,
Of easy wind and downy flake (鹅毛般的雪花).

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Frost (1874-1963)is one of the most popular of all American poets.Like Walt Whitman, another famous American poet,he wanted his poetry to be read and understood by the "common man".Frost wrote about farm and country life in early America, and his poems celebrate both the powerful force of nature and the strength and importance of human actions and choices.

214552. (2019•长安五中•高三上期中) Next month,I'm traveling to a remote area of Central Africa and my aim is to know enough Lingala - one of the local languages - to have a conversation.I wasn't sure how I was going to manage this - until I discovered a way to learn all the vocabulary I'm going to need. Thanks to Memrise, the app I'm using. It feels just like a game.
"People often stop learning things because they feel they're not making progress or because it all feels like too much hard work," says Ed Cooke, one of the people who created Memrise. "We're trying to create a form of learning experience that is fun and is something you'd want to do instead of watching TV."
Memrise gives you a few new words to learn and these are "seeds" which you plant in your "greenhouse".When you practice the words, you "water your plants".When the app believes that you have really remembered a word,it moves the word to your "garden".And if you forget to log on (登录),the app sends you emails that remind you to "water your plants".
The app uses two principles about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they link them to a picture in their mind.Memrise translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use "mems".For example,I memorized motele, the Lingala word for "engine",using a mem I created - I imagined an old engine in a motel (汽车旅馆) room.
The second principle is that we need to stop after studying words and then repeat them again later, leaving time between study sessions.Memrise helps you with this, because it's the kind of app you only use for five or ten minutes a day.
I've learnt hundreds of Lingala words with Memrise.I know this won't make me a fluent speaker, but I hope I'll be able to do more than just smile when I meet people in Congo. Now,I need to go and water my Vocabulary!

(1)What does Ed Cooke make an effort to do with Memrise?
A.Create memorable experiences.
B.Make progress with hard work.
C.Master languages through games.
D.Combine study with entertainment.
(2)What do the underlined words "water your plants" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

214698. (2017•西安中学•高三上期中) Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us.I have been into sports since I was six years old.I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior two,I met the new school basketball coach,Brian Pawloski.I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before.I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I'd make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.
Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met.He didn't expect 100% effort,he expected 200% effort.One example:he once made us do 40 suicide
drills for the 40 lay-ups(投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn't.
After this conditioning practice,as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink,I said,"Coach, that was the best practice I ever had."I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball,I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life's challenges, including Wooden,Coach and The Screwtape Letters.
In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now,unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how we did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted.I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly,in life.My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students.I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.

(1)Different from other coaches,Coach Brian
A.concentrated on skill training
B.trained the team to the edge of death
C.expected the team to do well in their studies
D.asked the team to do more reading than training
(2)The underlined phrase"slacked off"in the last paragraph probably means
A.paid no attention
B.showed no interest
C.had less passion
D.made less effort
(3)In the author's eyes,Coach Brian is
A.strict and helpful
B.hardworking and honest
C.skilled and cruel
D.professional and serious.

214718. (2018•西安中学•高二下期中) I'd never run more than 10 km but I was stepping it up to 4 times the distance - the 2017 London Marathon for charity. My target was to raise £2,000,a big challenge. But it was brilliant because collecting not only motivates you to train hard, but also means you're not just running for yourself. You're running for something much greater.
You'd be surprised at how many people donate money around the time of the marathon.People were so crazy that I hardly noticed how quickly things happened and how quickly the following months flew by.It was my first marathon.I did my research, made a plan and put it up on my wall and crossed an item off every time I went for a run. That's the key.The training plan lasted 16 weeks.I started with five-mile runs and got myself up to 8-10 miles.
Your training pays off on the day of the event.Go over Tower Bridge with thousands of people cheering you on,and run down roads that you never get the opportunity to go to - it's amazing. It's like a leap of faith. The truth is that if you never take the risk, you'll never know how much you'll push yourself and what you can achieve.
I haven't made a decision whether to take part in next year's London Marathon. But that's fine.I know I've already achieved something rather special that I can't stop talking about.

(1)What is the author's purpose in joining in the marathon?
A.To earn a reputation.
B.To challenge a 40 km run.
C.To raise awareness of physical exercise.
D.To collect money for charity.
(2)What is the most important in the preparation according to the author?
A.The proper training plan.
B.The craziness about the marathon.
C.The donation around the marathon.
D.The gradual change in the running distance.
(3)What did the author think of the marathon?
A.It's troublesome.
B.It's disordered.
C.It's exhausting.
D.It's inspiring.
(4)What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The author has decided to enter for the 2018 London Marathon.
B.The author will take part in other marathons all around the world.
C.The author regards the marathon experience as one of his proudest.
D.The author thinks one marathon is enough for a person to take pride of.

214747. (2017•西安中学•高二上期中) Fifteen years ago,I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees,I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.
Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera,a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view.Like me,this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes,my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take,I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape?Sure,I could have asked her,but something prevented me from doing so.She seemed so content in her observation.I didn't want to mess with that.
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there.I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it,I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.
This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who"ruined"it,now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger's bedroom wall?A bedroom, after all,is a very private space,in which some woman I don't even know has been immortalized(使…永存).In some ways, she lives in my house.
Perhaps we all live in each other's space.Perhaps this is what photos are for:to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.
That photo is a reminder,a captured moment,an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.

(1)What happened when the author was about to take a photo?
A.Her camera stopped working.
B.A woman blocked her view.
C.Someone asked her to leave.
D.A friend approached from behind.
(2)According to the author, the woman was probably
A.enjoying herself
B.losing her patience
C.waiting for the sunset
D.thinking about her past
(3)In the author's opinion, what makes the photo so alive?
A.The rich color of the landscape.
B.The perfect positioning of the camera.
C.The woman's existence in the photo.
D.The soft sunlight that summer day.
(4)The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand
A.the need to be close to nature
B.the importance of private space
C.the joy of the vacation in Italy
D.the shared passion for beauty.
