212779. (2025•西安一中•高二下期中)  Conversations With Journalists:An Invitation for Teenagers Would your students be excited if your curriculum (课程) included this article?
What if part of the assignment were to tell The New York Times about their own experiences with the selected news topic, and to suggest ideas for further reporting on it?And what if Times reporters were to write back to the students?
If you like this idea, you're in luck, because that's how our new Conversations With Journalists feature will work.
    Why We Are Doing This
As many as half of all teenagers now get their news from social media. They're becoming more removed from the professionals on the ground who are covering current events, interviewing sources,fact-checking,photographing and editing. And with mis- and disinformation, generative artificial intelligence and distrust in traditional media all on the rise,we believe it is more crucial than ever to help young people understand how journalism works and why it is important.
How the 14-Day Cycle Will Work
? Day 1:The Learning Network publishes a link to a Times article, along with a few open-ended discussion questions and guidelines for participating.
? Days 2-8:Students post their initial reactions and questions in the Learning Network comments section.
? Days 9-13:The journalist responds to students in the comments section using the "reporter reply" feature so that readers can easily see the response.Students then continue replying to both the journalist and to other students.
? Days 13-14:The journalist shares a brief reflection about the experience of conversing with students about the article.
Let Us Know What You Think
If you have a question or comment, post it here and we'll respond to you.

220551. (2016•七十中•高二下二月) The basic flag of the United States is one of the world's oldest national flags.Only the basic flags of Austria,Denmark,Great Britain, the Netherlands,Sweden, and Switzerland are older.
During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land,as symbols of possession.Later,in the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American Colonies.
The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777.It consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776.Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795 to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union,Vermont and Kentucky.
By 1817,there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag.As a result,Congress in 1818 restored the original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star.In 1912 President William H.Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each.Previously the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag-maker's fancy.
The evolution of the Stars and Stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959,the flag was officially changed for the 26th times since its creation. There are many government flags flown in the United States in addition to the national flag.Among them are the president's and vice-president's flags and those of the federal departments and some federal agencies. Each state in the Union has an official flag. The United States Navy uses special flags for signaling.
(1)The basic flag of the United States is

A.13 independent states
B.the colonies that declared independence in 1776
C.the U.S.Congress
D.13 famous figures in the American colonies
(4)Why was the original design of 13 stripes restored in 1818?
A.The American people suggested it.

Winner of 5 Olympics Gold Medals
"In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病).Believing my career was over,I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it - the encouragement I needed.I could still be a winner if I believe in myself.I am not saying that it isn't difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet.Nothing is to stand in my way."
   Karen Pickering
   Swimming World Champion
"I swim 4 hours a day,6 days a week.I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success - you can't follow a career in any field without being well-organized.List what you believe you can achieve.Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are,and you'll be a step closer to achieving them."
   Kirsten Best
   Poet & Writer
"When things are getting hard,a voice inside my head tells me that I can't achieve something. Then there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to focus. When I feel tense,it helps a lot to repeat words such as 'calm','concentrate',either out loud or silently in my mind.It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool."

213513. (2022•长安区一中•高二上期中) If the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) is a guideline to save the planet,garbage-sorting is where the efforts start.Since May 1,Beijing has started to carry out mandatory (法定的)garbage-sorting in new efforts to better protect the environment.Under the new regulation, residents ae required to classify household waste into four categories:kitchen, recyclable, hazardous and other waste.People who fail to sort their garbage properly can be fined from 50 to 200 yuan, reported Xinhua.
Some residential communities in Beijing have introduced rewards to encourage residents to sort their garbage.According to Xinhua, residents can earn points by classifying their domestic waste correctly and then exchange the points they accumulate for daily necessities such as soap.
Garbage sorting practices have reached over 70 percent of housing estates in 18 cities, including Shanghai,Xiamen and Hangzhou, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.Shanghai first enacted a mandatory garbage-sorting regulation in July 2019 and has had a 90 percent compliance (服从) rate among its housing estates.
According to a report by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage-sorting is important for the protection of the environment.However,garbage-sorting is still a big problem in China.Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are completely sorting their waste, the report noted.According to Xinhua,it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. Also, some previous garbage regulations didn't include fines for people who failed to obey them.
"It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting," Liu Jianguo,a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily, "Aside from China, many countries like Germany,Spain and Britain, also ask people to sort waste into specific categories. In Japan, there is a fixed time for the sorting of each kind of garbage and littering."

213356. (2023•西安中学•高一下期中) Los Angeles is always a popular holiday destination. To fully enjoy your travel there, you should know its food, weather, and also traffic. While driving in L.A.is similar to that in other areas, there are a few specific rules to note.
   HOV lanes (车道)
On many L.A.freeways,one or more lanes at the far left are used as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. They usually have limited access and you can only enter or exit where there is a break in the double yellow line. Most HOV lanes require a minimum of two people in the car;some require three.Vehicles towing trailers (拖车) are NOT allowed in the HOV lane, regardless of how many people are in them.
   Toll (收费) lanes
On certain freeways, the HOV lanes are double-purposed as toll lanes for people driving alone who have a FasTrak,an electronic toll collection system. Therefore, you also have to have one in that lane as a HOV,which is inconvenient if you're just visiting.FasTrak is in effect on parts of the 110 freeway between the 405 and 10 freeways, and on parts of the 10 freeway east of Downtown L.A.
   Cell phones
It is against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving without using a hands-free device.Holding a cell phone to your ear while driving will land you with a ticket.
   Alcohol
Driving under the influence is taken seriously in L.A.The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%,but you can be charged with lower levels if they show you can't function normally.Placing an opened bottle of alcohol in the passenger area while driving (or sitting) is illegal.Any opened container of alcohol has to be transported in the trunk.

A.Driving on the 110 freeway with a FasTrak.
B.Putting the cell phone in the car while driving.
C.Riding with an opened bottle of alcohol in back seats.
