219907. (2020•铁一中学•高二下二月) My husband and I had been married nearly twenty-two years when I acquired Stevens- Johnson syndrome,a disorder where my immune system responded t or virus by producing painful blisters.Although my long-term evaluation was good.I,who had been to fiercely independent, rapidly became absolutely helpless.
My husband,Scott, stepped up to the plate, taking care of kids and cooking dinners. He also became my personal caretaker, applying the medicine to all of my blisters because my hands couldn't do the job.Needless to say,I had negative emotion, bouncing from embarrassment to shame caused by total reliance on someone other than myself.
At one point when I had mentally and physically hit bottoms I remember thinking that Scott must somehow love me more than I could ever love him. With my illness he had became the stronger one,and I the weaker one.And this disturbed me
I recovered from my illness, but I couldn't seem to recover from the thought that I loved my husband less than he loved me.This seeming distinction in our love continued to annoy me for the year following my illness.
Then recently Scott and I went on a long bike ride. He's an experienced cyclist;I'm quite the green hand.At one point with a strong headwind and sharp pain building in my tired legs,I really thought I couldn't go any further.Seeing me struggle,Scott pulled in front of me and yelled over hioulder, "Stay close behind me." As I fell into the draft of his six-foot- three-inch frame and followed his steps,I discovered that my legs quit burning and I was able to catch my breath. My husband was pulling me along again. At this very moment I woke up to what I now believe;during these and other tough times, love has the opportunity to become stronger when one partner learns to lean on the other.

214608. (2019•西电附中•高一上期中) When an earth hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture touched me.It gave the clothing sizes of each family member.I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves.I said to my seven-year-old twins,Brad and Brett,Megan, and three-year-old Meghan, "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We'll shall what we have with them."
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things.Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away.A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy,he much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh,dear," I said. "You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy,Mummy.Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too."

219908. (2020•铁一中学•高二下二月) For the past two years I have been travelling and living abroad.Home has become more of a feeling than a place.I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in Italy with friends I love.Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows. It is more complicated than that.
This is one of the reasons that celebrating the New Year has become very important for me.I do not care about "New Year's resolution" --living abroad has made me constantly reconsider what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life,so I don't feel the need to plan for change:I live for change.
New Year's Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends that makes me feel at home.Every year we try to reunite wherever we are,and remember the time when we knew each other so well that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other again.Last year,we travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had on internet and no neighbors. In the middle of the countryside, away from our big and constantly changing lives,we were able to become like a little family again.
This year,we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life an joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same-- I felt at home again and we felt like family again.
A lot of people feel that New Year's Eve cannot live up to expectations.Ideas such as the "New Year's kiss" and "resolutions" create a lot of pressure for people to have a nigh to remember,a night that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year one worth living.I think those people are missing the point. If Christmas is about family, why can't New Year be about friends?

(1)What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.New Year's resolutions cannot be reached
B.His lifestyle make him always ready for change
C.It's meaningless to make my big changes in life.
D.Making New Year's resolution creates much pressure
(3)What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?
A.Life is peaceful and enjoyable
B.Living abroad is a happy experience
C.Staying with friends makes one feel at home
D.Travelling abroad enriches one's life experience
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.New Year's Celebration:How?
B.True Friendship:What?
C.Living Abroad:Comfortable or Complicated
D.Change:Plan it or Make it?

202672. (2020•西安中学•三模) I used to spend the second half of Sunday fearing Monday morning.Over the years, little tweaks to my routine have changed things to the point that I am in the "I Love Mondays" camp. Here's what I've found that works:
Consider Sunday nights your warm-up for Monday.Get everything you need for the morning ready to go.If mornings are a struggle…give it a try at least for Mondays and see if it makes a difference.Once that's done, consider a special "Sunday Night Only" calming down ritual (惯例).It might be tea and a favorite TV show,or it might be a long hot bath and reading until you're ready for sleep.Whatever it is,enjoy this Monday morning warm-up,and consider sleeping a little earlier than you're used to,in order to help with the second step.
One of my favorite parts of the weekend is sleeping in and waking up when I'm ready instead of fighting with the alarm for "Just five more minutes!" Sleeping a little early on Sunday night can help with getting up a little early on Monday morning - not to pack more into your morning to-do list, but to give yourself time to take it slowly. When you have a little extra time in the morning, you can gently settle into the day and keep that weekend feeling of ease as you start your new week.
Find a theme for the week.Every Monday,I post an inspiring quote or saying. These are intentional! Each week,as part of my Sunday night calming down time,I consider what I'd like to focus on in the coming week, and look for a quote that's a good fit to strengthen it.
What are you excited about for the new week? What problem-solving opportunities do you have? What's been hanging over your head undone from last week?During your preparation time on Sunday night, think about the week ahead and mark a few things that you want to get done and can reasonably accomplish. If possible, schedule at least one of them for Monday,so you've started your week off feeling successful, instead of feeling like there's a mountain of tasks ahead of you.The work is the same either way,but our attitudes are always within our control.
When you are intentionally creating a life you love,Mondays begin to feel less like drudgery(单调乏味的苦差事),and more like a beautiful start!

(1)The underlined word "tweaks" is the closest in meaning to

B.You can have enough time to sit with your tea or coffee.
C.You can have the weekend feeling longer by starting slowly.
D.You can have enough time to make a to-do list for the week.
(3)What does the author want to indicate in Para.5?
A.Be confident to solve the problems.
B.Look for opportunities for the week.
C.Arrange your tasks well for the week.
D.Positive attitude means a happy Monday.

202833. (2020•西工大附中•四模) We may think we're a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight of something shiny and new,but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices (装置) well after they go out of style. That's bad news for the environment and our wallets-as these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things.
To figure out how much power these devices are using,Callie Babbitt and her colleagues at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for each product throughout its life from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using the device. This method provided a readout for how home energy use has evolved since the early 1990s.Devices were grouped by generation.Desktop computers, basic mobile phones, and box-set TVs defined 1992.Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997.And MP3 players, smart phones, and LCD TVs entered homes in 2002,before tablets and e-readerowed up in 2007.
As we accumulated more devices, however,we didn't throw out our old ones. "The living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids' room, and suddenly one day,you have a TV in every room of the house," said one researcher. The average number of electronic devices rose from four per household in 1992 to 13 in 2007.We're not just keeping these old devices -we continue to use them.According to the analysis of Babbitt's team, old desktop monitors and box TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy, consumption and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions (排放) more than doubling during the 1992 to 2007 window.
So what's the solution (解决方案)?The team's data only went up to 2007,but the researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new electronics that serve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV viewing. They found that more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.

(1)What does the author think of new devices?
A.They are environment-friendly.
B.They are no better than the old.
C.They cost more to use at home.
D.They go out of style quickly.
(2)Why did Babbitt's team conduct the research?
A.To reduce the cost of minerals.
B.To test the life cycle of a product.
C.To update consumers on new technology.
D.To find out electricity consumption of the devices.
(3)Which of the following uses the least energy?
A.The box-set TV.
B.The tablet.
C.The LCD TV.
D.The desktop computer.
(4)What does the text suggest people do about old electronic devices?
A.Stop using them.
B.Take them apart.
C.Upgrade them.
D.Recycle them.

214515. (2020•西安一中•高一下期中) I didn't know how to say no,and was afraid to tell people what I wanted.Instead,I got myself tangled (纠结的) in a web of obligations, anxiety, and white lies.
The worst thing was that I didn't even realize what I was doing.I thought I knew how to say "no"-but couldn't remember the last time I had.Like a lot of people,I just wanted to be accepted,appreciated,loved-and that the only way to get those things was to put everyone else's needs before my own.
I never seemed to have time for things I really wanted to do.I'd like to learn Spanish, write more fiction, and travel. These aren't huge, unrealistic goals. And yet,my people-pleasing ways dramatically cut into my free time to pursue these desires.
But recently,I decided I'd had enough. As an experiment,I began standing up for myself, even at the risk of alienating (使疏远) myself from everyone and having my entire life come crashing down around me.Several days ago,a good friend asked me to go for coffee at 5 p.m.I was planning to hit the gym and then binge-watch Mad Men for the millionth time.I said, "Sorry,I've got things I want to do tonight." She said, "That's fine.Maybe another time." It was all so painfully simple that I wanted to cry.
Saying "no" is so much easier. If someone asks me to do something I have zero interest in,I'm polite but honest. "I'm sorry,I don't think that's really for me." The words slip out my mouth faster than some other lame excuses.
Learning how to say "no" has added several extra hours to my days, days to my weeks, and what feels like months to my years.I no longer have to back-burner my plans to help friends with their job search,or set aside a weekend to read a book draft by someone I barely know.Saying "no" has set me free.

(1)Why was the author afraid of saying "no"?
A.She didn't want to tell lies.
B.She wanted to make more friends.
C.She wanted to please every one.
D.She was always willing to help others.
(2)What was the bad point of being afraid of saying "no"?
A.She alienated many friends.
B.She was kept busy all day long.
C.She felt depressed now and then.
D.She had no time for her own hobbies.
(3)What was her friend's reaction when she said "no" to her?
A.Natural.
B.Painful.
C.Angry.
D.Disappointed.
(4)How did the author feel after she had learnt to say "no"?
A.Lonely.
B.Relaxed.
C.Confident.
D.Lost.

219879. (2019•西安中学•高三上一月) Give yourself a test.Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door?If your awareness is aarp as it could be,you'll have no trouble answering these questions.
Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults.A child's day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder.Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear;we are numb to new stimulation, new ideas.Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students,I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be.We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring.Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.
Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) many of us have with naming things.I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said,a "ruby-crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.
The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness.I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark.It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit,to take a moment to see what's around them.I asked them what they'd seen. "Oh,a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait.Next time you take a walk,no matter where it is,take in all the sights, sounds and sensations.Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.

(1)According to Paragraph 2,compared with adults, children are more
A.anxious to do wonders
B.sensitive to others' feelings
C.likely to develop unpleasant habits
D.eager to explore the world around them
(2)What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?
A.To avoid jumping to conclusions.
B.To stop complaining all the time.
C.To follow the teacher's advice.
D.To admit mistakes honestly.
(3)Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?
A.The natural beauty isn't attractive to them.
B.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.
C.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.
D.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.
(4)In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should
A.fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world
B.get rid of some bad habits in our daily life
C.open our mind to new things and ideas
D.try our best to protect nature

202691. (2020•西安中学•二模) I always wanted to be extraordinarily good at something. Not just as in, "Great job,Jimbo!" No,I wanted to be best-in-class,awe-inspiring,tiptop:a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps,or Mark Zuckerberg.
Unfortunately,my version of reality did not quite line up with this delusional vision.I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.
Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond.God apparently had other plans.
What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose of it.Why couldn't I be like Bernie Williams, the famed New York Yankees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso?
Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time.Around ten thousand hours,to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell.I don't question the theory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one's expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don't.
I've heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results,we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealized youthful expectations.
   Hope bends,it seems.

203033. (2017•铁一中学•一模) ONE day I saw a TV advertisement.A couple - she in a black dress,he in a super-stylish shirt and tie - was enjoying a candlelit (烛光的) meal accompanied by romantic music. The location?Pizza Hut.I nearly choked on my tea.
"What?!" I laughed to my Chinese friend. "Pizza Hut is trying to be all gourmet(美食的)and fashionable?!" My friend looked confused. "But Pizza Hut is fashionable," she said. " You go there for a special meal."
In China, chain restaurants-especially the big multinational ones-are cool.Going to Starbucks, for example,is a status symbol. It not only says, " I'm rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee," but also, "I'm cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization."
Where I come from in the UK,however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet.Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere are neither fashionable nor gourmet.Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere else is open,or when you are 5 years old and your parents can't stand hearing. "I'm hungry!" any longer. In my own case(with regards to McDonald's),a chain is where you are taken on your first "date".Even at the age of 13,I knew to give the guy the "let's just be friends" phone call the next day.
In the UK,independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene.Nowadays,a Londoner who says "let's meet for a coffee at Monmouth" (an independent café) is much cooler than one says "let's go to Starbucks",Even if Monmouth's coffee is a little more expensive, there's a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren't going straight to the big corporations.
Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK;you can't go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.I do,however, have a confession. After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much.I,too, have retreated to McDonald's.Even so,I would never describe my Big Mac as "haute cuisine."
(1)Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because
A.the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture
B.the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants
C.they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status
D.these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date
(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The author has grown tired of Chinese food.
B.Branches of Monmouth's café can be found all over the UK.
C.Most independent stores are closed on New Year's Day in the Uk.
D.It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.
(3)What does the underlined word " haute cuisine" in the last paragraph mean?
A.high-class cookery
B.expensive cookers
C.delicious food
D.a fashionable tradition
(4)What is the main point of the article?
A.The difference between Chinese food and the western food.
B.The comeback of independent cafes and restaurants in the UK
C.What makes chain restaurants gourmet and fashionable both in China and the UK.
D.The different attitudes towards chain restaurants of Chinese and British people.

205803. (2017•西北大附中•高二下期末) FC Barcelona's football academy (专门学校),La Masia, has trained some of the best footballers in Europe, such as Pep Guardiola,Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique. Many people believe that Barcelona is the best football team in Europe because of the training programme at the school. Now,FC Barcelona has opened similar academies all around the world, including in Egypt,Japan,America and Dubai.
It is difficult to join the Barcelona academy.Every year, over 1,000 students apply, but only 70 students can live and study at the school. They are aged between 11 and 18.Seventy coaches, teachers, doctors and cooks look after the students. The academy costs about£5 million a year to run.But the students all have scholarships,so they don't pay any money.FC Barcelona pays for everything:the students' rooms, teachers, books and food.
However, the students don't only learn football.FC Barcelona also wants to give their students a good academic education. It is important to the club that their students can still get good jobs if they don't become professional footballers.Students travel by bus to local schools each morning for four hours of study. The footballers return to La Masia after lunch and do football training in the afternoons.

205788. (2017•西北大附中•高一下期末) If you live in a big city, there are many things to drive you crazy on your daily route, and it's not just overcrowded subway trains.
Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her,one thing she can't put up with is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯) in subway stations."Escalators help us move faster and save time.It isn't a place to rest,"the 24-year-old says."I often see tourists block the way with their suitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hours. It annoys me to no end."
Admitting she is not the patient type,Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where"stand right, walk left"signs are often ignored.
The logic behind the"stand right, walk left"escalator etiquette(礼仪) seems obvious.Even though you may want to catch your breath while you're transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry,so that they can run and catch the train.
Many cities' escalators, including London's and Beijing's,use the"stand right, walk left"system to speed up the flow of people.(Australia is an exception and you should stand on the left side instead.) But some cities discourage people from moving on escalators out of safety reasons. In Hong Kong's subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to"stand still"on escalators.Even so,most people in this fast-paced city observe the"stand right, walk left"etiquette.
But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves by telling the walkers not to be so impatient. The BBC quotes one stander as saying:"If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs?Even when the escalator is packed and there's nowhere to move,I see these same people complaining about not being able to pass."
Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live or visit,do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others:leave enough space between each other, don't stay at the end of the escalator, and if someone is blocking your way,a simple"excuse me"is enough.

(1)When on the escalator,a majority of local people in Hong Kong
A.stand still as the railway stations require.
B.ignore the"stand right,walk left"signs
C.use the stairs instead of escalators.
D.follow the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
(2)What can be inferred from the 6th paragraph?
A.Not everyone follows the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
B.The BBC is against the"stand right,walk left"etiquette.
C.People should be patient and take the stairs if possible.
D.People shouldn't complain about the crowded escalators.
(3)Which of the following statements is the writer's opinion?
A.People should stand right no matter where they are.
B.People should do as the Romans do and consider others.
C.People should do as they like on the escalators.
D.People should be seriously criticized when they block the way.

205770. (2018•西安一中•高二上期末) I am Henry Jekyll.I was born in the 1800s.I inherited(继承) a large fortune,a healthy body and an excellent mind.I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job.So the outside world saw a serious,hard-working,successful doctor.Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild,fun-loving,irresponsible young man. Both of them were me.They lived together in the same body.
"Was it possible," I wondered, "to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?"
After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer.I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug.At last I got everything ready.
Late one night,I mixed everything together and prepared my drug.I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely,I drank every bitter drop.
I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place.Wild thoughts danced through my mind-the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. "If this is pure evil," I thought, "I like it."
I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I waorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room,I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.
At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side.Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man.I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men.Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde's eyes.I felt no dislike, however.Indeed,I welcomed him.Edward Hyde was me,young and strong and full of life.

(1)The writer wanted to find a drug to
A.discover the right mixture of chemicals
B.create separate bodies for both sides
C.observe the change of the chemicals

(2)From the passage we can learn that the writer

205805. (2017•西北大附中•高二下期末) I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England, living in a foreign country.By the time I was old enough, however,I thought that my language was going to hold me back.
However, luckily for me,Leeds University, where I was studying at the time, made it possible for any student, even people like myself speaking only one language,to study abroad. Before I knew it I was boarding a plane for Salzburg,Austria.I wasn't quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge.
The university was quite small but the classes were large. Also,Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses,so studying was somewhat more relaxed than at home.Austrian students go home quite often, too. Therefore, the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot, which didn't help our language skills.
Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city.It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. As a result,it is usually very busy with tourists.I also found that it doesn't have a lot going on for young people,in comparison to Leeds.
There were, however, many advantages to living in Salzburg. For example, get on a train and you can be in Prague,Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours.By the end of my year in Salzburg,I had visited eight other countries in Europe.
After spending a year overseas,I went back to my course in Leeds much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunities (机会) university provides. The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just travelling through.I'd recommend all students to spend a year studying abroad if they can.

(1)In the author's opinion, what may have prevented his studying abroad?
A.His not being old enough.
B.His fearing the culture shock.
C.His becoming homesick easily.
D.His not knowing a foreign language.
(2)Compared with Leeds University, the university in Salzburg
A.provides more social events
B.has longer university years
C.has more foreign students
D.offers more small classes
(3)One advantage the author mentions about Salzburg is that
A.it's a good location for travelling
B.it has a high-speed rail network
C.it's the hometown of Mozart
D.it's full of foreign tourists
(4)What does the author think of his experience of studying abroad?
A.He benefited a lot from it.
B.He regretted studying abroad.
C.It was far from what he expected.
D.It badly affected his studies at home.

205822. (2017•西安中学•高二下期末) On June 10,2003,I graduated from U of T,Scarborough. As I stood at University College waiting with hundreds of others,I suddenly felt overcome with emotion. My very long and personal journey to convocation had started 20 years earlier on the St.George campus.
I first enrolled at U of T through the Transitional Year Programme in 1983.At the time I was a 30-year-old mother of two girls and married to"the boy next door."I was both excited and terrified, and felt a little like Rita in the movie Educating Rita-traveling daily to classes in high heels.I decided that it would be better for my family if I attended classes closer to home,so I transferred to Scarborough for my second year. After picking up the girls from school,I'd bring them back to the studio where I rehearsed.Much to my horror, they would crawl around on the catwalks high above me.They were 10 and 12 and loved being at"Mom's school."
My life changed drastically that year.On June 10,1986,my husband of 13 years was killed in a horrific accident.I picked up my life the best I could under the circumstances and returned to U of T,but failed to get all the credits I needed.Twenty years later,on the eve of my 50th birthday,I e-mailed an old professor, who encouraged me to sign up for a new class he was teaching about writing for the theatre. This time I made it all the way through.
As I stepped inside Convocation Hall,I searched the crowd for my girls, now in their thirties. They were in the highest balcony, waving frantically at me-just as they had done from the catwalk in my drama class so long ago.I will never forget the look on the girls faces as they called out"Hi Mom."I finally felt complete.
