212617. (2025•西光中学•高一下期中)     It amazed me—every time I saw Joe,he was smiling. It didn't matter whether he had to stop at a stop light,or if he was the seventh person in line at the bank, and the teller ended her job just before he got there.Joe always smiled. It made me wonder why he always seemed so happy.
Having observed Joe with other people,I noticed something else too.Joe asked people how they were doing, and really seemed to listen to their answers. He showed pity to someone who was hurting, and had kind words, and offered to help in any way he could.
It made me think. What if I tried to smile more?An experiment began when I went to the supermarket.I smiled as I went up and down the supermarket and people I didn't even know smiled back at me.Some even spoke! The little kid in the cart who was giving his mother a hard time saw me smile,he stopped talking and then made a shy attempt at a smile. The man in the cart for the disabled needed help to reach for something, and I got it for him.The smile even transferred over to him,and he thanked me.
As I drove home,I was smiling. Now I know a smile is a small thing, but what if we all tried to smile a few more times each day?I couldn't believe how great I felt.Nothing in my life had changed, but maybe it had. What I had learned was that such a small thing could lift not only my spirits, but also the spirits of those around me.So smile!

252684. (2024•中铁中学•高二下一月)     A little over five months ago,on Nov 15,Abdusamat Keram completed a 280-day hiking journey covering more than 5,000 kilometers on foot. This expedition from Kashgar,Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region,to Beijing.
He used to believe that, being a child from a rural area and born into a farming family,he would not have the privilege to explore the outside world. However, through television and the internet,he observed numerous hikers and adventurers and believed as long as one has dreams and the determination to pursue them, one can definitely go out and explore.
In April 2022,he quit his job and got onto on the Taklimakan Desert trip with his brother, who is 10 years older than him.On Feb 7,2023,Abdusamat set out on his solo journey.Well, not entirely alone —he was accompanied by his dog,Shunfeng, which means "downwind" in Chinese, and a two-wheeled cart he constructed to carry essential provisions on the road.
"The climate in Xinjiang and Gansu is very different from that in Shaanxi," Abdusamat explained. "I can handle temperatures reaching 30 ℃ or even 40 ℃ in Xinjiang, but not in Shaanxi, where the humidity and stifling heat can easily overwhelm me."
But these challenges also made him appreciate regional differences.Hiking from the far west of China to the east —traversing Xinjiang,Gansu,Shaanxi,Henan,Hebei, and finally Beijing —and experiencing winter, summer, and winter again,Abdusamat gained insights into the vastness, greatness, and exceptional beauty of the country. "As I covered the land of China inch by inch with my feet and was met with kindhearted people who offered me help in every place I went,it deeply impressed upon me the unity of our nation," Abdusamat said. "I also have a firmer belief now —a belief that I can achieve anything as long as I put my mind to it."

284337. (2023•华清中学•高一下期末)     Proudly reading my words,I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.Confused,I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher.Having no choice,I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. "What could be causing everyone to act this way?"
Quickly,I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real talk I received in my new school. It seemed simple:go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington.Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country,I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow,it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America.I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant.I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice—flipping(掷) a coin.Heads-the commander, the tails-the peanuts guy.Ah!Tails,my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter,George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass,I was totally lost.Oh well,I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report,it all became clear, "My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution." The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously,my grade was awful.Disheartened but fearless,I decided to turn this around.I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted:No new grades.I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance.Consequently,I devoted myself to my work for the rest of the school year.Ten months, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation.I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the six grade.Justice is sweet!

282136. (2023•师大附中•高一上期中)     I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston,US,raised by a single mother who didn't finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called "the most dysfunctional public school district".Not many people expected much of me,so I had to expect something of myself.
On my 13th birthday,I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room.Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about.Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 am to pitch blackness,I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn't have had me closer to my goal.Even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day.The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays;it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep;and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better,my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in.Finally,an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was "Congratulations!"A month later,Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.

252613. (2025•新城区•高三上一月)        On a chilly afternoon in Welgelegen, inside the welcoming warmth of the Apalachee Spur, five young boys and their mentor (导师) gathered for what they thought would be a simple catch-up session over hot drinks. They weren't expecting to leave with full takeaway bags and a life lesson in kindness they'll likely carry forever.
The boys are part of The Character Company,a national initiative for boys growing up without active father figures.Week by week, their mentor devotes his time to talking, listening, and helping them build values like courage. That afternoon, running late but determined to connect,he decided to treat the boys to something small,a hot chocolate.
They chatted about school and exams, bursting out laughing from time to time. The boys eventually drifted off to play, and their mentor asked for the bill. But what came next was a real surprise to the mentor.Instead of a slip of paper and a total, the Spur manager arrived with a smile, and a surprise:a stranger had quietly covered the cost of their drinks and ordered five burgers and chips for the boys to enjoy.

In my study,I always believed I could perform better with extra effort. My research never felt finished, and I had no idea how many hours I was supposed to work. That made it easy to go down rabbit holes and work more hours than necessary. When I started my first faculty position,my contract stated that I work anywhere from 36 to 48 hours per week. But my teaching and administrative workloads were so high that I regularly reached the 48-hour mark. There was a long time during my first faculty job when my children didn't see me enough.
In my second faculty position,I expected that my work hours would again be my business. So when I was told to track them,I was surprised. But anyway I decided to keep careful track of my hours, even noting breaks.
I'm glad I did, because the data have completely changed my view of work-life balance. With my tracking,I've found that I generally accumulate one week of overtime every two to three months. So now, every time I reach that milestone,I take a few days or even a whole week off.I spend that time at home with my family,or use the days to take a longer vacation. The breaks have improved my happiness and job satisfaction.
The data also help ease any guilt that I may have otherwise felt if taking time off.I still have deadlines, position requirements, and the pressure to publish papers. And I still work a lot, sometimes even on weekends. But I now know how much I work-and that I deserve the time off.

A.A promotion.
B.More personal time.

A.Rabbit holes
B.Work-life balance

218654. (2023•铁一中学•高二下二月) Years earlier,I'd been a trainee in a lab, which stuck to a traditional format. The lab head would spend much time asking the presenter a series of pointed questions.Presenters would need to know extremely small details about articles they were citing and present their research using picture-perfect analyses and graphs. So the presentation was an untoward thing to almost anyone.
When I started my own lab,I decided to change the routine by being friendly and welcome while asking my trainees challenging questions about their science. But for 6 years,I felt I hadn't created the lab environment I wanted.
The turning point came during the pandemic. It hit home to me that one's life isn't endless and that I need to make the most of the time I have.I decided that I wanted to become a better professor—to make a mark by training the next generation of scientists.
In my personal life,I had benefited from listening to talks by motivational speakers. So I decided to start there. At the next lab meeting,I showed my students a video about happiness, hoping it would help them in their personal life and give us something light to discuss.I wasn't sure how they'd respond, but I was pleased to discover that they were interested in discussing the advice in the video afterward. In the end,I asked them whether they'd like to do similar activities in future meetings, and they said yes.
From then on,I began every lab meeting with a 20-minute team building session. My lab members and I do many activities—including analyzing and appreciating poetry. These sessions have eased tensions and opened minds, helping foster more participation later in the meeting.
So far,I have been hopeful about the lab environment we're creating. My greatest wish is to see my trainees become their best selves, understand who they are and what they want as well as reach their career goals.I am proud of the change and the difference I've made.

218554. (2023•雁塔二中•高一下二月) Aron Ralston was a pretty normal guy,but he always had an extremely adventurous desire to travel and see the world.During his childhood, his family moved to Denver,Colorado,a place offering many opportunities to climb mountains, explore, and eventually become the adventurer he'd always wanted to be.Back in 2003,Ralston was climbing in the remote, mountainous area of Southwestern Utah, when the unthinkable happened:Aron got stuck in a crevice (裂缝) in the rocks and pinned by a big stone that weighed over 360 kilograms. The weight of the rock crushed his arm,and he was pinned by it.Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse) as he waited for rescue teams (救援队) to come to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe.
But rescuers never came.Aron waited for them for days till he lost his hope.He knew he had to do something. He was 18 meters above the floor of the valley where he was pinned in,and he had a pocketknife. He made what must have been one of the most difficult decisions of his life:to cut his own arm in order to survive.Aron cut the lower part of his arm off, having to wrench (扭动) his forearm against the big stone to break the bones, and then got himself down to the bottom of the valley, where he would begin to walk and search for help.Luckily, help arrived in the form of a helicopter (直升机) that spotted him, covered in blood.Aron had tied off the wound to keep himself from bleeding to death pretty successfully and would eventually make it out alive.
