William Shakespeare is the greatest poet and playwright the world has ever known.In Great Britain，almost everyone knows his name，even if they have never read his poems or plays.Many people can quote lines from his plays，because they are so well ﹣ known.For example，" To be or not to be，that is a question ".These words，from Shakespeare's best ﹣ known play Hamlet，are probably his most famous words.They are familiar to many people around the world.
William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in England.Shakespeare not only wrote plays，but also acted in his own plays and in the plays of other writers.Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613.His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best works produced in these genres.Until about 1608，he wrote mainly tragedies，among which were Hamlet，Othello，King Lear，and Macbeth，all considered tobe the finest works in the English language.
Shakespeare was not only famous in his time，but also quite wealthy.He even bought a theatre，together with some friends.His life was a success story，but it was not always happy.The saddest thing that happened to Shakespeare was the death of his only son at eleven years of age.
